Previous work in the research field of Smart Camera (SC) networks intensively focused on algorithms for obtaining vision graphs in distributed camera networks consisting of static camera nodes. Each edge of the vision graph represents two cameras imaging a sufficiently large part of the same environment. In contrast, we propose that future SC networks will consist of static SCs, supported by mobile image providers (e.g. embedded devices equipped with image sensors such as mobile phones). Due to their mobility, location changes (especially turnings changing the direction of view) are very likely. In contrast to position changes, which can be detected by using off-the-shelf GPS sensors, turnings can only be detected by high-cost magnetic compasses. In this paper, we present a lightweight distributed algorithm for estimating turning movements based on visual sensor data and updating the system's vision graph. Our algorithm uses the optical flow as input to compute the turnings. Evaluations on a mobile image provider, consisting of an off-the-shelf embedded device equipped with an IP cam, show that our algorithm is able to estimate the angle of rotation with an accuracy of 80% and performs well in terms of CPU and memory utilization. © 2010 23th International Conference on Architecture of Computing systems 2010, ARCS 2010 - Workshop Proceedings. computers can be used more effectively for constructive work instead of just chatting and games. This paper talks about our efforts in introducing computers to junior high school students (eighth grades) as more creative learning tools in a fun way. A visual programming curriculum utilizing an autonomous robot was developed. Both the course design and the teaching materials are discussed in the paper. Moreover, the before and after difference in taking the course is shown by conducting survey and data analysis on them. The results show that after taking the course, most junior high school students were able to experience the broad view of usage of computer other than just thinking of computer as tools for recreational activities such as gaming and chatting.

The Web offers autonomous and frequently useful resources in growing manner. User Generated Content (UGC) like Wikis, Weblogs or Webfeeds often do not have one responsible authorship or declared experts who checked the created content for e.g. accuracy, availability, objectivity or reputation. The user is not able easily, to control the quality of the content he receives. If we want to utilize the distributed information flood as a linked knowledge base for higher-layered applications - e.g. for knowledge transfer and learning - information quality (iq) is a very important and complex aspect to analyze, personalize and annotate resources. In general, low information quality is one of the main discriminators of data sources on the Web [1]. Assessing information quality with measurable terms can offer a personalized and smart view on a broad, global knowledge base. We developed the qKAI application framework [2] to utilize available, distributed data sets in a practically manner. In the following we present our adaption of information quality aspects to qualify Web resources based on a three-level assessment model. We deploy knowledge-related iq-criteria as tool to implement iq-mechanisms stepwise into the qKAI framework. Here, we exemplify selected criteria of information quality in qKAI like relevance or accuracy. We derived assessment methods for certain iq-criteria enabling rich, game-based user interaction and semantic resource annotation. Open Content is embedded into knowledge games to increase the users' access and learning motivation. As side effect the resources' quality is enhanced stepwise by ongoing user interaction.

In this paper, we provide a generalized file replication scheme with a storage load balancing function in unstructured P2P file-sharing networks. The generalized file replication scheme is expressed as a weighted mixture of the concepts introduced in existing schemes. A mathematical analysis shows that the system behavior realized by the generalized file replication scheme can be described by a thermal diffusion equation composed of heat, reaction and diffusion terms, the weights of which are controlled by a parameter of the mixing rate. Here, the heat term represents a function to enhance file search performance by making replicas on specific peers. The reaction term represents a function to avoid concentrations of storage loads on specific peers. The diffusion term represents a function to uniform the storage loads among peers. The simulation results show that the generalized file replication scheme enables us to control the trade-off between search and storage load balancing performances extensively and intuitively by controlling the parameter of the mixing rate. In addition, the simulation results show that the generalized file replication scheme can adapt to dynamic P2P file-sharing environments. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we present our work and results in the framework of obstacle avoiding for marine vehicle teams by means of trajectory planning. Based on a team of maritime systems, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) or Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs), which are intended to perform a preplanned mission in a given formation topology, methods for trajectory planning are investigated which guarantee for both obstacle-free paths and formation preservation. The proposed solution contains advanced graph search and trajectory smoothing to generate executable path for the vehicles. © 2010 IFAC.

A novel voting system for the identification of eukaryotic genome promoters

Motivation: Accurate identification and delineation of promoters/TSSs (transcription start sites) is important for improving genome annotation and devising experiments to study and understand transcriptional regulation. Many promoter identifiers are developed for promoter identification. However, each promoter identifier has its own focuses and limitations, and we introduce an integration scheme to combine some identifiers together to gain a better prediction performance. Result: In this contribution, 8 promoter identifiers (Proscan, TSSG, TSSW, FirstEF, eponine, ProSOM, EP3, FPROM) are chosen for the investigation of integration. A feature selection method, called mRMR (Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance), is novelly transferred to promoter identifier selection by choosing a group of robust and complementing promoter identifiers. For comparison, four integration methods (SMV, WMV, SMV_IS, WMV_IS), from simple to complex, are developed to process a training dataset with 1400 se- quences and a testing dataset with 378 sequences. As a result, 5 identifiers (FPROM, FirstEF, TSSG, epo- nine, TSSW) are chosen by mRMR, and the integration of them achieves 70.08% and 67.83% correct prediction rates for a training dataset and a testing dataset respectively, which is better than any single identifier in which the best single one only achieves 59.32% and 61.78% for the training dataset and testing dataset respectively.

In this paper, we define the portfolio of a generation company as the coordination of a set of generation units, which differ in production cost, capacity, and geographical location. A portfolio allows a generation company to coordinate its generators to bid strategically to earn profit more than what can be achieved without coordination. In a constrained transmission network, for example, a generation company can raise the electricity prices at a particular zone by congesting the inbound transmission lines through importing electricity from neighboring zones where other cheaper generation units of the company located. Understanding generation companies' bidding behaviors under such situation is therefore crucial to ensure market fairness. In this paper, we use an agent-based approach to model the electricity market as a multi-player game and investigate how the transmission capacity and installed capacity of generation companies affect their bidding strategies under both a monopoly market and a non-monopoly market. We demonstrate conditions under which generation companies will prefer a coordination strategy over a non-coordination one.

In this paper, we model the problem of bandwidth allocation for a broadband satellite communication system using a two level market-based game. Specifically, we consider that a number of satellite operators sell bandwidth to a certain number of users in order to maximize their profit. Simultaneously, the users choose from which satellite to buy the requested bandwidth trying to maximize their efficiency. Therefore, the initial problem of bandwidth allocation is modeled as a multiple buyer-multiple seller game where the satellites represent the sellers and the users represent the buyers of the game.
