Deep Learning Approaches for Battery Capacity and State of Charge Estimation with the NASA B0005 Dataset

Accurate capacity and State of Charge (SOC) estimation are crucial for ensuring the safety and longevity of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. This study examines ten machine learning architectures, Including Deep Belief Network (DBN), Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network (BiDirRNN), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and others using the NASA B0005 dataset of 591,458 instances. Results indicate that DBN excels in capacity estimation, achieving orders-of-magnitude lower error values and explaining over 99.97% of the predicted variable’s variance. When computational efficiency is paramount, the Deep Neural Network (DNN) offers a strong alternative, delivering near-competitive accuracy with significantly reduced prediction times. The GRU achieves the best overall performance for SOC estimation, attaining an R 2 of 0.9999, while the BiDirRNN provides a marginally lower error at a slightly higher computational speed. In contrast, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) exhibit relatively high error rates, making them less viable for real-world battery management. Analyses of error distributions reveal that the top-performing models cluster most predictions within tight bounds, limiting the risk of overcharging or deep discharging. These findings highlight the trade-off between accuracy and computational overhead, offering valuable guidance for battery management system (BMS) designers seeking optimal performance under constrained resources. Future work may further explore advanced data augmentation and domain adaptation techniques to enhance these models’ robustness in diverse operating conditions.

In recent years, the Mekong River Basin (MRB), one of the largest river basins in Southeast Asia, has experienced severe impacts from extreme droughts and floods. Streamflow forecasting has become crucial for effective risk management strategies in the region. However, this task presents significant challenges due to rapid climate changes and the presence of numerous newly constructed upstream dams, which disrupt the natural flow. In this paper, we develop multiple deep learning models (incl. Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long short-term Memory (LSTM), and Transformer) to predict streamflow with different lead time forecasts based on observed meteorological variables and climatic indices (i.e., discharge, water level, precipitation, and temperature) from 1979 to 2019. The results indicate that LSTM obtains high performance for streamflow prediction in both dry and wet seasons while Transformer is not recommended for long-term prediction, especially in the dry season. The proposed deep learning models capture well the fluctuation of river flow in the MRB during the period of high-dam development, especially LSTM (NSE ≥ 0.8). The models' performances are enhanced with the adding of temperature for short-term prediction while precipitation was the most sensitive variable for long-term one. Such proposed models are essential for government agencies to plan mitigation and adaptation strategies at different periods, which can range from days to years. © 2013 IEEE.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) data is considered contaminated with various types of artifacts. Deep learning has been successfully applied to developing EEG artifact removal techniques to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and enhance brain-computer interface performance. Recently, our research team has proposed an end-to-end UNet-based EEG artifact removal technique, IC-U-Net, which can reconstruct signals against various artifacts. However, this model suffers from being prone to overfitting with a limited training dataset size and demanding a high computational cost. To address these issues, this study attempted to leverage the architecture of UNet++ to improve the practicability of IC-U-Net by introducing dense skip connections in the encoder-decoder architecture. Results showed that this proposed model obtained superior SNR to the original model with half the number of parameters. Also, this proposed model achieved comparable convergency using a quarter of the training data size.

"Power Consumption Dash Board Using IoT" was developed using a web application. The planned system includes a home energy monitoring system and cloud service notifications. An Internet of Things (IoT) platform was implemented to monitor energy consumption data at home and send the energy consumption data to the IoT cloud. The system uses the WiFi connected to the RaspberryPiPico to measure the energy consumption of the house. Energy consumption data is collected and stored in IoT cloud services. Consumers can monitor the energy consumption of their home on a daily basis and thus control how much energy is used on a daily basis. The data collection experiment aims to determine household energy consumption. Also, the website shows data on energy consumption before and after the load is connected to the system. IoT dashboard available online that allows users to check their daily energy consumption using IoT dashboard. IoT Cloud performs event analysis based on collected energy consumption data and alerts the owner with an alert, an email recommendation and a telegram notifying the customer when the energy consumption limit is exceeded, helping to reduce excessive energy consumption. © 2023 Editorial Board of Journal of Harbin engineering. Healthcare monitoring frameworks emerged as one of the most essential frameworks and innovations established over the last decade. As a result of failing to provide adequate clinical attention to patients at the appropriate time, many people are facing the possibility of an untimely death. Ultimately, the goal was to develop an IoT-based integrated healthcare monitoring framework that could be relied upon by healthcare professionals to screen their patients, whether they were in the hospital or at home, to ensure that they were being well-cared for. Sensors, an information acquisition unit, a microcontroller (e.g., Arduino), and a product modification were used to construct a mobile phone-based remote healthcare monitoring framework that may provide continuous web-based data about a patient's physiological states (i.e., JAVA). The framework checks, displays, and stores the patient's temperature, heart rate, and EEG data before sending it out on the specialist's portable device with the application. In this way, an IoT-based patient monitoring framework may effectively monitor a patient's health state and save their life on time. © 2024

This paper investigates the covert communication in a satellite-terrestrial system, including a satellite transmitter Alice, a terrestrial full-duplex receiver Bob and a terrestrial warden Willie. To help the covert transmission from Alice, the full-duplex Bob transmits the jamming signal to confuse Willie and also receives the signal from Alice simultaneously. To explore the fundamental covertness in such a system, we first provide theoretical modelings for satellite-terrestrial downlink, and the detection error probability of Willie. Based on these models, we then study the transmit power optimization for covert rate maximization. Finally, we present extensive numerical results to validate our theoretical analysis and to illustrate the impact of various system parameters on the maximum covert rate.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have emerged as highly effective strategies in the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases. mRNA design, a key to the success of mRNA vaccines, in-volves finding optimal codons and increasing secondary structure stability to lengthen mRNA half-life, ultimately enhancing protein expression. Despite receiving widespread attention, most methods primarily rely on manual design, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. While optimization approaches can alleviate this issue, existing methods still exhibit critical limitations caused by conflicts between codon usage and mRNA structural stability, compounded by the vast design space of mRNA resulting from the presence of synonymous codons. In this paper, a novel multi-objective evolutionary optimization-based mRNA design method is proposed. We first formulate the mRNA design problem as a multi-objective optimization problem and then develop an Elite Archive-Assisted Multi-Objective Evolutionary algorithm for mRNA Design, namely EAA-MOED, by incorporating a novel elite archive-assisted method into a weighted optimization framework to improve search efficiency. Experimental studies, involving two state-of-the-art mRNA design methods and five well-known MOEAs, show the competitiveness of the proposed EAA-MOED in mRNA design.

Robotics education plays a crucial role in developing STEM skills. However, university-level courses often emphasize theoretical learning, which can lead to decreased student engagement and motivation. In this paper, we tackle the challenge of providing hands-on robotics experience in higher education by adapting a mobile robot originally designed for competitions to be used in laboratory classes. Our approach integrates real-world robot operation into coursework, bridging the gap between simulation and physical implementation while maintaining accessibility. The robot's software is developed using ROS, and its effectiveness is assessed through student surveys. The results indicate that the platform increases student engagement and interest in robotics topics. Furthermore, feedback from teachers is also collected and confirmed that the platform boosts students' confidence and understanding of robotics.

This paper presents an analysis of a data set to determine the factors influencing airline passenger satisfaction. The study examines various criteria such as gender, customer type, age, travel type, class, and range to assess their impact on passenger satisfaction. The dataset consists of 25 columns, including attributes like Wi-Fi availability, convenience of online booking, seat comfort, in-flight entertainment, baggage handling, and overall satisfaction. The sample is relatively balanced, with equal representation of men and women, predominantly repeat customers, and a majority flying for business purposes. Key findings include a strong correlation between departure and arrival delays, higher satisfaction among passengers in business class, and positive ratings for Wi-Fi service correlating with overall satisfaction. Correlation analysis reveals interdependencies between different attributes, such as the influence of cleanliness on seat comfort and food and beverage ratings. In addition, a neural network forecasting model is used to estimate the average ratings of passengers, although with low accuracy, which was later excluded. Finally, a decision tree algorithm is utilized to identify the most significant attributes affecting passenger satisfaction words. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
