Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an evolving paradigm for rendering services through network-accessible resources deployed over Internet of Things (IoT) nodes at the edge. Nevertheless, an MEC environment usually employs thousands of physical machines connected via hundreds of switches/routers that communicate and coordinate to deliver computing service. In such complicated systems, faults caused by software, human errors, and hardware are often unavoidable. The edge of network presents a dynamic environment with great quantities of terminals, high mobility of mobile devices, heterogeneous applications, and intermittent traffic. In such an environment, MEC can suffer from unbalanced resource provisioning and interruptions of faults occurring at different levels, which further causes task faults and affects service quality. To address this challenge, this work proposes a novel fault-tolerant offloading method for handling faults by leveraging a reinforcement-learning-based service offloading decision model. The model synthesizes a Dueling Deep Q Network (DQN)-based algorithm for deciding user offloading behaviors and an adaptive checkpointing method for improving task execution reliability. For the purpose of model validation and comparison, extensive simulations are conducted. Numerical results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method is highly effective and outperforms existing methods. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Blockchain technology has received a lot of interest in recent years owing to its potential to disrupt many different businesses, including the financial industry. As more and more business is conducted over the internet, the need of safe payment methods for online purchases has grown. This study's focus is on how blockchain technology may be used to the creation of trustworthy digital currency payment systems. This study takes a look at the pros and cons of using electronic payment methods at the moment. The study then investigates how blockchain technology might be used to circumvent these constraints, and it gives a thorough introduction to the several blockchain-based secure payment systems now in use. Finally, the study looks forward to the future of blockchain-based secure payment systems for electronic commerce, discussing their possible influence on the sector as a whole. This study was written for academics, industry experts, and policymakers interested in learning more about blockchain's applications in the realm of digital trade. © 2025 IEEE.

One of the most important aspects of aerospace engineering applications is to create new "flyable" systems. We plan to demonstrate Detonation Engine System2 (DES2) operation using liquid propellants in the space environment for the first time, using the sounding rocket S-520-34. A cylindrical rotating detonation engine was used with liquid ethanol as fuel and liquid nitrous oxide as oxidizer. The plume images were successfully acquired by the onboard digital and analog cameras, and the ignition was successful, which can be confirmed from the image. From pressure and temperature histories, nitrous oxide was considered to be supplied into the combustor with nitrogen from X+125.5 s. Therefore, the combustion pressure decreased due to decrease in total mass flow rate. From the Short-time Fourier transform (STFT) result, a peak value of 21.0 kHz (two-wave mode) was measured, and a peak value of 13.5 kHz (single wave mode) was measured. Therefore, the bipropellant RDE operation was successful. As for the propulsive performance, we measured the RDE axial thrust from the flyable system’s axial acceleration directly, and the thrust was in good agreement with the value calculated from the combustion pressure. Digital Image Processing (DIP) is the ability to manipulate digital photographs via algorithms for pattern detection, segmentation, enhancement, and noise reduction. In addition, the Internet of Things (IoT) acts as the eye and system for all DIP in various applications. It can possess a camera or another image sensor in order to capture real-time data from its environment. All vital data is processed by image processing in such a way that it recognizes the object, detects an anomaly, and automatically decides in real-time. In addition, in an IoT system, the median filter is the technique used for noise reduction by substituting the value of the pixel with the central value of the surrounding pixels. It provides speed and efficiency for quick analysis in all IoT systems. However, the images can get corrupted, especially in resource-constrained IoT devices with small cameras, because of random glitches. Moreover, using new quantum technology like atomic-scale silicon dangling bond (DB) logic circuits, which have advanced in fabrication and become a strong contender for field-coupled nano-computing, can solve previous problems in IoT systems. In this paper, we propose a unique quantum CSM based on two new proposed Mux and De-mux. The proposed CSM can be used for computational circuits like median filter circuits (MFC) in a wide range of digital circuits, specifically IoT devices. The proposed design is verified and validated using the powerful SiQAD tool. When comparing CSM to the newest designs, the suggested quantum circuit uses 85% less energy and takes up 61% less area. © 2014 IEEE.

The biosystem is a crucial system grounded in classification and detection, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches or metaheuristic techniques. Currently, cancer of the blood cells is among the deadliest cancers in the world. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of blood cells that causes excessive proliferation of lymphocytes. It is extremely time-consuming and expensive to conduct diagnostic calculations. The number of platelets in a patient's blood is computed by a platelet count. A lacking number of platelets can indicate cancer, infection, or other health problems. A patient with too many platelets is at risk for blood strokes. A single drop of blood includes tens of thousands of platelets. The main goal of this paper is how to detect the features of blood cells and classify with predicting cancer type based on platelets analysis by using Bee Colony followed by Reptile Search Optimization (BCRSO) technique. According to the results, BCRSO algorithm performed better in terms of classification efficacy and accuracy rate than other algorithms. Based on simulation results, the proposed method is more effective than previously published research for classification optimization.

Accurate and secure classifying informal documents related to mental disorders is challenging due to factors such as informal language, noisy data, cultural differences, personal information and mixed emotions. Conventional deep learning models often struggle to capture patterns in informal text, as they miss long-range dependencies, explain words and phrases literally, and have difficulty processing non-standard inputs like emojis. To address these limitations, we expand data dimensionality, transforming and fusing textual data and signs from a 1D to a 2D space. This enables the use of pre-trained 2D CNN models, such as AlexNet, Restnet-50, and VGG-16 removing the need to design and train new models from scratch. We apply this approach to a dataset of social media posts to classify informal documents as either related to suicide or non-suicide content. Our results demonstrate high classification accuracy, exceeding 99%. In addition, our 2D visual data representation conceals individual private information and helps explainability. © 2025 The Authors

We investigate the carrier transport characteristics of perforated graphene layer (PGL) composed of arrays of interdigital coplanar graphene microribbons (GMRs) connected by graphene nanoribbon (GNR) bridges. We analyze their operation at room-temperature. Under an applied bias voltage, two-dimensional electron and hole systems (2DES and 2DHS) form in adjacent GMRs. The terminal current in these PGL structures is primarily governed by thermionic transport across the GNR bridges. As electrons and holes traverse the GNRs, they induce heating in the 2DES and 2DHS, creating a positive feedback loop between carrier heating and thermionic emission. This phenomenon, characterized as hot-carrier thermal breakdown, can give rise to S-shaped inter-GMR current-voltage characteristics. These unique transport properties make PGLs promising candidates for fast, voltage-controlled room-temperature switches and electromagnetic radiation detectors. © 2025, CC BY.

The assessment of surgical skill is crucial for indicating a surgeon's proficiency. While motion analysis of surgical tools is widely used in endoscopic surgery, it is not commonly applied to open surgery. Instead, open surgery skill assessment relies on observing the trajectory of surgical tools on tissue. This observation-based method often lacks clear standards, leading to inaccurate assessments. This paper presents a method for evaluating cutting skill in open surgery through scalpel motion analysis. A 3D multiple-facet ArUco code cube is designed, and a dataset of tip coordinate system poses for various scalpels in the ArUco code coordinate system (ACS) is established using the pivot calibration method. The YOLOv8 model and an image dataset of different scalpels are used to identify the scalpel type and select its tip position. The tip position is then transformed from ACS to a binocular camera coordinate system (BCS), representing the incision curve made by the scalpel. Five assessment metrics are proposed to quantify the surgeon's cutting skill: average incision curvature deviation, incision length difference, incision endpoint deviation, average incision deviation, and average cutting jerk. Experiments involving twenty expert and novice surgeons performing four common incisions (straight line, polyline, semicircle, and cross line) demonstrate the metrics' effectiveness. The metrics provide a clear, objective display of individual cutting skills, and a combined ranking reveals comparative skill levels. This study offers a precise method for evaluating surgeons' cutting skills with a scalpel in open surgery. © 1964-2012 IEEE.

With rapid technological changes and globalized supply chains, intelligent and adaptable logistics systems are crucial, particularly at seaports. Container terminals face increasing volumes and demands, leading to potential truck congestion and long queues. Automation offers a solution by optimizing port performance and adapting to dynamic conditions, though port digitalization is complex due to diverse stakeholders and information flows. This work is part of the digital transformation of the Port of Sines - Portugal, specifically in the Smart Gate concept context. For this purpose, the Port of Sines Administration, together with other partners, has established the prerequisite of a pre-gate, which is currently being analysed from the point of view of its processes, the technologies to be included and the information models to be supported. This work aims to dynamically analyse the pre-gate model by testing different scenarios to propose improvements to the inherent processes using simulation. The study culminated in a discrete-event simulation model with Anylogic software to predict pre-gate behaviour and foresee potential issues. By testing various scenarios and evaluating their effects on key performance indicators, this model supports the continuous improvement of pre-gate processes.

The easier it is for people to recognize that a fruit is ripe and ready for selling at the market allows the farmers, in some cases, to sell their crop early before it would normally spoil. If we look closely, we see that many times people don’t buy something because it appears rotten or way past its peak ripeness, which demonstrates how products spoil right on time. This study proposed a user-convenient system for fruit ripeness detection using the convolutional neural network (CNN) based on RipeNet structure.
