We analyze a tree search problem with an underlying Markov decision process, in which the goal is to identify the best action at the root that achieves the highest cumulative reward. We present a new tree policy that optimally allocates a limited computing budget to maximize a lower bound on the probability of correctly selecting the best action at each node. Compared to widely used Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) tree policies, the new tree policy presents a more balanced approach to manage the exploration and exploitation trade-off when the sampling budget is limited. Furthermore, UCB assumes that the support of reward distribution is known, whereas our algorithm relaxes this assumption. Numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm in selecting the best action at the root. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have merged as important enabling technologies for localization coverage extension and localization accuracy improvement under signal blockage and malicious interference conditions. However, most existing works assume known locations of jammers, which is generally impractical in real-world networks. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel RIS-enhanced wireless localization framework against malicious interference with the support of either narrowband or orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pilot signals. A two-stage anti-jamming localization approach is developed to first estimate the unknown channel and signal information of the jammer and then localize the user’s position by eliminating the jamming signal. More importantly, we utilize the full potential of RIS to improve localization accuracy by optimizing the phase shift profile during the iterative process. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the commendable performance of our proposed framework, which can not only mitigate the jamming effect but also achieve better localization accuracy, offering a good reference for future heterogeneous and complex wireless networks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Blockchain technology is a promising approach for solving the security and personal privacy problems in Internet applications. The successful commercial deployment of Blockchain markets relies on a comprehensive understanding of the economic and strategic interactions among different entities involved. In this paper, we focus on a blockchain market consisting of a blockchain platform (BP), multiple miners, and blockchain users (BUs), and formulate their interactions as a three-stage Stackelberg game. In Stage I, the BP strategizes the rewards granted to the miners, so as to attract the miners to contribute more computing power used for improving the security and privacy of the blockchain. In Stage II, each miner strategizes its computing power individually for winning the mining compe-tition, which is modeled as a non-cooperative game. In Stage III, the BUs strategize the transaction fee to acquire a corresponding service experience. With the objective of utility maximization, we develop a theoretical framework to analyze the hierarchical interactive behaviors among the entities in a backward inductive way. By solving the Stackelberg equilibrium, we determine the optimal strategies of entities in closed-form. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the strategic interactions in the blockchain market.

Brain glioma segmentation using multi-parametric magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has significant clinical value. Although 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become increasingly prevalent in delivering this segmentation task, these models still suffer from an insufficient ability to high-resolution feature representation for small and irregular regions, limited local receptive fields, and poor long-range dependencies. In this paper, we propose a 3D High-resolution and Non-local Feature Network (HNF-Net) for brain glioma segmentation using multi-parametric MR imaging. We construct HNF-Net based mainly on the parallel multi-scale fusion (PMF) module, which helps produce strong high-resolution feature representation and aggregate multi-scale contextual information. We also introduce the expectation-maximization attention (EMA) module to HNF-Net, aiming to capture the long-range dependent contextual information and reduce the feature redundancy in a lightweight fashion. We evaluated our HNF-Net on the BraTS 2019 Challenge dataset against eight top-ranking methods listed on the challenge leaderboard. Our results suggest that the proposed HNF-Net achieves improved overall performance over these methods, and our ablation study demonstrates the effectiveness of the PMF module and EMA module. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are reshaping the landscape of e-commerce and retail. Using advanced analytics, behavioral modeling, and inference, representatives of these industries can leverage collected data and increase their market performance. To perform assortment optimization – one of the most fundamentals problems in retail – one has to identify products that are present in the competitors’ portfolios. It is not possible without effective product matching. The paper deals with finding identical products in the offer of different retailers. The task is performed using a text-mining approach, assuming that the data may contain incomplete information. Besides the description of the algorithm, the results for real-world data fetched from the offers of two consumer electronics retailers are being demonstrated. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This article discusses the security issue of using unknown USB devices and how to protect against unauthorized access to a user's computer by using hardware backdoors by attackers. An Arduino-based hardware backdoor was developed to carry out experiments on the operability of protective mechanisms. The data obtained as a result of the experiment contain the results of testing the developed backdoor and methods of protecting the computer from such devices.

In the case of agricultural machines for soil cultivation, their working parts are controlled by the operator, or if repetitive operations are required, a rigid memory may be used during the work. In this paper, a design of rigid memory is made to send the order to the working parts to make furrows. This rigid memory is made up of a rotating cam and a rotating roller cam follower. The cam-cam follower mechanism has the advantage that it allows the machine’s working parts to model the furrow shape as the designer wants. © 2020, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Energy resilience in renewable energy sources dissemination components such as batteries and inverters is crucial for achieving high operational fidelity. Resilience factors play a vital role in determining the performance of power systems, regardless of their operating environment and interruptions. This article introduces a Unified Resilience Model (URM) using Deep Learning (DL) to enhance power system performance. The proposed model analyzes environmental factors impacting the resilience of batteries and energy storage devices. This deep learning approach trains performance-impacting factors using previously known low resilience drain data. The learning output is utilized to augment various strengthening factors, thereby improving resilience. Drain mitigation and performance improvements are combined for direct impact verification. This process validates the model's fidelity in enhancing power system performance, with a specific focus on the impact of weather factors. © 2025 The Authors

Continuous-time fitted value iteration for robust policies

Solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is important in many domains including control, robotics and economics. Especially for continuous control, solving this differential equation and its extension the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation, is important as it yields the optimal policy that achieves the maximum reward on a give task. In the case of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation, which includes an adversary controlling the environment and minimizing the reward, the obtained policy is also robust to perturbations of the dynamics. In this paper we propose continuous fitted value iteration (cFVI) and robust fitted value iteration (rFVI). These algorithms leverage the non-linear control-affine dynamics and separable state and action reward of many continuous control problems to derive the optimal policy and optimal adversary in closed form. This analytic expression simplifies the differential equations and enables us to solve for the optimal value function using value iteration for continuous actions and states as well as the adversarial case. Notably, the resulting algorithms do not require discretization of states or actions. We apply the resulting algorithms to the Furuta pendulum and cartpole. We show that both algorithms obtain the optimal policy. The robustness Sim2Real experiments on the physical systems show that the policies successfully achieve the task in the real-world. When changing the masses of the pendulum, we observe that robust value iteration is more robust compared to deep reinforcement learning algorithm and the non-robust version of the algorithm.
