The natural and atmospheric circumstances regarding energy resources are experiencing a transformation at the global level due to the exhaustion of the supply of conventional energy resources and climate change. With regards to energy storage systems, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have remained the most popular energy storage system technologies because of their high energy density, longer cycle life, and reliability. Nonetheless, the costs and scarcity of lithium as a raw material for REs are unreasonable in the long term. But, new chairs such as sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are seeing potential benefits over traditional batteries including the availability of Sodium, cost of raw materials, and eco-friendliness. However, there are concerns with SIBs about their less energy density in comparison with LIBs, which needs the invention of expertise. This paper seeks to establish the feasibility of SIBs by analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Major and minor drawbacks presented in any SIB system are discussed regarding cost performance, safer operation, and environmental gains related to drawbacks such as energy density and cycles per life. Also, important dilemmas regarding LIBs presented in the literature including high efficiency, high power density, and environmentally sound recycling methods are discussed. This study underscores how different conditions may boost SIB performance, commercial feasibility and need for further technical efforts to eliminate existing obstacles so that SIBs can be effectively applied to smarter grids and other renewable energy systems.

In existing models and embedding methods of networked systems, node features describing their qualities are usually overlooked in favor of focusing solely on node connectivity. This study introducesFiD-Mercator, a model-based ultra-low dimensional reduction technique that integrates node features with network structure to createD-dimensional maps of complex networks in a hyperbolic space. This embedding method efficiently uses features as an initial condition, guiding the search of nodes’ coordinates toward an optimal solution. The research reveals that downstream task performance improves with the correlation between network connectivity and features, emphasizing the importance of such correlation for enhancing the description and predictability of real networks. Simultaneously, hyperbolic embedding’s ability to reproduce local network properties remains unaffected by the inclusion of features. The findings highlight the necessity for developing network embedding techniques capable of exploiting such correlations to optimize both network structure and feature association jointly in the future.

The present article discusses the issue of automation of the CICO (Check-In/Check-Out) process for public transport fare collection systems, using modern tools forming part of the Internet of Things, such as Beacon and Smartphone. It describes the concept of an integrated passenger identification model applying machine learning technology in order to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with the incorrect classification of a smartphone user as a vehicle passenger. This will allow for the construction of an intelligent fare collection system, operating in the BIBO (Be-In/Be-Out) model, implementing the "hands-free" and "pay-as-you-go" approach. The article describes the architecture of the research environment, and the implementation of the elaborated model in the ***4 proprietary solution. We also presented the complete process of concept verification under real-life conditions. Research results were described and supplemented with commentary.

The Nigerian power system is characterized by huge gap between supply and demand. With electricity demand projected to increase with the population, growing at an annual average of 2.5%, the imbalance between generation and demand is bound to persist unless urgent strategy planning of the generation and transmission infrastructures is pursued. The REPLAN project proposes multi-region power system planning approach to help deliver insight into the long-term development of Nigerian power sector. REPLAN utilizes the regional energy resources and load demand to optimally fashion out generation capacity mix for inter-connected regional grids, capable of operating independently for Nigeria. A multi-region optimization model is developed to investigate the long-term development of the regional grids over a timeframe from 2015 to 2050. The results of the simulation experiments conducted on different scenarios show the suitability of the developed model for predicting the optimal pathways for inter-regional grids for Nigeria.

Robust PID Controller Design for Both Delay-Free and Time-Delay systems

Robust PID controller design methods are proposed for linear single-input single-output systems. Non-parametric models represented by a finite number of frequency responses are used for them. Sufficient conditions for closed-loop stability are derived based on the Nyquist stability criterion and the sufficient conditions are reduced to convex constraints. Together with the convex constraints and closed-loop model matching problems the robust PID controller design problems are formulated as convex optimization problems. A important feature of the proposed design methods is that they can be applied to delay-free and time-delay systems in the same manner. Moreover, the proposed methods are extended to two-degree-of-freedom PID controller design methods. © 2018

In this work, we consider the problem of robot navigation, under spatial and temporal constraints, modeled as Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL) formulas. We introduce appropriate control schemes, driven by time-dependent vector fields, that satisfy both the problems of (a) entering an arbitrary neighborhood of the workspace within a given time interval, and, (b) avoiding collision with any given obstacle. We model the problems (a) and (b) as MITL formulas, defined upon a specific class of atomic propositions, and proceed in building more complex MITL expressions that can be decomposed into a conjunction of the former formulas. Finally, we propose a way to generate a hybrid automaton, whose execution satisfies the given MITL formula, by appropriately composing the control schemes. We validate our methodology via a numerical simulation.

Traditional centralized multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms are sometimes unpractical in complicated applications due to non-interactivity between agents, the curse of dimensionality, and computation complexity. Hence, several decentralized MARL algorithms are motivated. However, existing decentralized methods only handle the fully cooperative setting where massive information needs to be transmitted in training. The block coordinate gradient descent scheme they used for successive independent actor and critic steps can simplify the calculation, but it causes serious bias. This paper proposes a flexible fully decentralized actor-critic MARL framework, which can combine most of the actor-critic methods and handle large-scale general cooperative multi-agent settings. A primal-dual hybrid gradient descent type algorithm framework is designed to learn individual agents separately for decentralization. From the perspective of each agent, policy improvement and value evaluation are jointly optimized, which can stabilize multi-agent policy learning. Furthermore, the proposed framework can achieve scalability and stability for the large-scale environment. This framework also reduces information transmission by the parameter sharing mechanism and novel modeling-other-agents methods based on theory-of-mind and online supervised learning. Sufficient experiments in cooperative Multiagent Particle Environment and StarCraft II show that the proposed decentralized MARL instantiation algorithms perform competitively against conventional centralized and decentralized methods. In this paper, we report our work on developing a new dataset for baseball pitch type recognition based on youtube videos of the US Major League Baseball games. The core innovation is a largely automated procedure to extract relevant clips from the full game, and automatically label the clips by aligning the infographic information included in the broadcast and the PitchF/X data. We adopted the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm to address the challenges imposed by the aligning the two streams of data based on pitch speed, i.e., minimize gaps and mismatches between the two streams. Manual inspection is used only to select games that include infographic information for clip extraction and to remove erroneous clips for improve the quality of the dataset. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

This research paper presents ongoing research work towards developing an effective remote sensing system for bridge inspections. The paper describes the development and evaluation of a five-step prototype image processing algorithm to detect concrete cracks. The algorithm, based on an unsupervised learning approach, extracts pixels that belong to concrete cracks from images. The algorithm was tested using various images collected from field tests. The images included different types of concrete cracks, along with various types of noise factors. The algorithm was successful in detecting the different types of concrete cracks from various images. Contrary to most studies from the literature, these images were not 'clean'. That is, the images were collected from field tests and used as inputs to the detection algorithm without any preprocessing activity. © 2018 IEEE.

In the transportation systems engineering field, there is a fast growing interest to use small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for structural inspections. Of particular importance is the development of image processing algorithms to process UAS collected data for transportation infrastructure (e.g., bridges) defect detection/classification purposes. Results from preliminary experiments using image data collected with a UAS have shown the presence of significant image noise, which negatively impacts the efficiency of algorithms to detect/classify structural defects. This research study presents an ongoing effort to understand the relationship between UAS camera vibrations to image noise. Ultimately, the objective is to identify maximum camera vibration frequencies that will result in acceptable image noise levels for effective detection and classification of defects. © 2018 IEEE.
