Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoparticle incorporated thin films of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA ) were spin coated on ITO coated glass substrates. I-V characteristics revealed resistive switching in these films. The ON/OFF switching ratio values varied with voltage sweep cycles. The largest switching ratios obtained were 8 orders between the high resistance state (HRS) to low resistance state (LRS) and 7 orders for the LRS to HRS. In the LRS, the electrical conduction was initially space charge limited which turned to ohmic behavior that persisted till switching occurred to HRS. In the reverse voltage sweep, the conduction in HRS was initially ohmic, which then turned into a hopping type of conduction which persisted till switching occurred to the LRS. These conduction mechanisms in LRS and HRS are qualitatively different from that of pure rGO and other PVA composite films investigated earlier.

We consider the problem of decentralized consensus optimization, where the sum of n smooth and strongly convex functions are minimized over n distributed agents that form a connected network. In particular, we consider the case that the communicated local decision variables among nodes are quantized in order to alleviate the communication bottleneck in distributed optimization. We propose the Quantized Decentralized Gradient Descent (QDGD) algorithm, in which nodes update their local decision variables by combining the quantized information received from their neighbors with their local information. We prove that under standard strong convexity and smoothness assumptions for the objective function, QDGD achieves a vanishing mean solution error under customary conditions for quantizers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first algorithm that achieves vanishing consensus error in the presence of quantization noise. Moreover, we provide simulation results that show tight agreement between our derived theoretical convergence rate and the numerical results. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper an analytical framework for the joint allocation of multiple physical resources under a dynamic personalized pricing setting, in a NOMA wireless network, is designed. Under our proposed user-centric paradigm, price is treated as a resource itself rather than simply being a control parameter and represents the user willingness to pay towards obtaining certain QoS levels. Each user expresses her satisfaction with respect to her and other users choices through a specifically designed utility function based on her unique characteristics and preferences. The resource allocation problem under consideration, becomes a distributed utility maximization problem, where each user updates her controllable parameters in an autonomous manner targeting at her satisfaction maximization. The problem is modeled and solved as a multivariable non cooperative game, admitting a unique Nash Equilibrium (NE), whose convergence is reached via a distributed and low complexity algorithm. Detailed numerical results, clearly demonstrate that the proposed framework allows the users to better exploit the system's resources, and therefore improve their overall satisfaction, while achieving significant improvements in the system operation in terms of power savings and achievable data rate.

In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, multiple exciton resonances with highly tunable properties are formed and subject to both vertical and lateral confinement. We investigate how a unique control knob, the twist angle between the two monolayers, can be used to control the exciton dynamics. We observe that the interlayer exciton lifetimes in MoSe2/WSe2 twisted bilayers (TBLs) change by one order of magnitude when the twist angle is varied from 1◦ to 3.5◦. Using a low-energy continuum model, we theoretically separate two leading mechanisms that influence interlayer exciton radiative lifetimes. The shift to indirect transitions in the momentum space with an increasing twist angle and the energy modulation from the moiré potential both have a significant impact on interlayer exciton lifetimes. We further predict distinct temperature dependence of interlayer exciton lifetimes in TBLs with different twist angles, which is partially validated by experiments. While many recent studies have highlighted how the twist angle in a vdW TBL can be used to engineer the ground states and quantum phases due to many-body interaction, our studies explore its role in controlling the dynamics of optically excited states, thus, expanding the conceptual applications of "twistronics". This paper reports on the basic findings and future perspectives of a capacity building project funded by the European Union. The International Master of Science on Cyber Physical systems (MS@CPS) is a collaborative project that aims to establish a master program in cyber physical systems (CPS). A consortium composed of nine partners proposed the project. Three partners are European and from Germany, UK and Sweden; while the other six partners are from the South Mediterranean region and include: Palestine, Jordan and Tunisia. The consortium is led by the University of Siegen in Germany who also manages the implementation of the work packages. CPS is an emerging engineering subject with significant economic and societal implications, which motivated the consortium to propose the establishment of a master program to offer educational and training opportunities at graduate level in the fields of CPS. In this paper, CPS as a field of study is presented with an emphasis on its importance, especially with regard to meeting local needs. A brief description of the project is presented in conjunction with the methodology for developing the courses and their learning outcomes.

Polarized light microscopy provides high contrast to birefringent specimen and is widely used as a diagnostic tool in pathology. However, polarization microscopy systems typically operate by analyzing images collected from two or more light paths in different states of polarization, which lead to relatively complex optical designs, high system costs or experienced technicians being required. Here, we present a deep learning-based holographic polarization microscope that is capable of obtaining quantitative birefringence retardance and orientation information of specimen from a phase recovered hologram, while only requiring the addition of one polarizer/analyzer pair to an existing holographic imaging system. Using a deep neural network, the reconstructed holographic images from a single state of polarization can be transformed into images equivalent to those captured using a single-shot computational polarized light microscope (SCPLM). Our analysis shows that a trained deep neural network can extract the birefringence information using both the sample specific morphological features as well as the holographic amplitude and phase distribution. To demonstrate the efficacy of this method, we tested it by imaging various birefringent samples including e.g., monosodium urate (MSU) and triamcinolone acetonide (TCA) crystals. Our method achieves similar results to SCPLM both qualitatively and quantitatively, and due to its simpler optical design and significantly larger field-of-view, this method has the potential to expand the access to polarization microscopy and its use for medical diagnosis in resource limited settings. In this paper is presented a wearable textile fractal tree patch antenna, generated by L-systems for C-Band and X-band application. The proposed structure used L-systems up to 4 interactions, it was built in denim, a wearable, textile and flexible substrate with laminate cooper on top. The antenna works between the C-band (4 - 8 GHz) and the X-band (8 - 12 GHz) frequencies. The proposed fractal tree patch antenna presented a 5.95 GHz bandwidth and a maximum gain of 9.46 dBi.

Horticultural enterprises are becoming more sophisticated as the range of the crops they target expands. Requirements for enhanced efficiency and productivity have driven the demand for automating on-field operations. However, various problems remain yet to be solved for their reliable, safe deployment in real-world scenarios. This paper examines major research trends and current challenges in horticultural robotics. Specifically, our work focuses on sensing and perception in the three main horticultural procedures: Pollination, yield estimation, and harvesting. For each task, we expose major issues arising from the unstructured, cluttered, and rugged nature of field environments, including variable lighting conditions and difficulties in fruit-specific detection, and highlight promising contemporary studies. We propose a procedure for identification of reduced-order bilinear models from time-domain data, i.e., sampled values of the control input and of the observed output. To accomplish this, we require two sets of data corresponding to the response of the system to two differently-scaled step functions, as control inputs. Then, the Markov parameters for two time-varying linear models are extracted, and from this information, we are able to infer a reduced-order bilinear model.
