Smart meter data enables real-time insights into energy consumption, grid performance, and load management, improving grid reliability, energy efficiency, and the integration of renewable resources. Effective communication between smart meters and the control center plays a pivotal role in enhancing grid resilience. Advance metering infrastructure (AMI) exhibits several limitations, such as communication delays, metering technology, data storage, and processing capabilities, that impede its ability to deliver real-time data with extreme precision and small time granularity. Thus, the accuracy and timeliness of data collection and analysis may be compromised, which could impact the efficiency of energy management and grid operations. This paper presents a novel method for scheduling smart meter data access that is based on the real-time assessment and analysis of the data. A quality metric known as mismatch probability is used to evaluate meter data and schedule the meters using the Hungarian algorithm. The proposed method has been tested on real data from a Danish grid. Results show enhanced information quality in the context of real-time monitoring in comparison to scheduling algorithms chosen heuristically. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In modern large-scale systems with sensor networks and IoT devices it is essential to collaboratively solve complex problems while utilizing network resources efficiently. In our paper we present three distributed optimization algorithms that exhibit efficient communication among nodes. Our first algorithm presents a simple quantized averaged gradient procedure for distributed optimization, which is shown to converge to a neighborhood of the optimal solution. Our second algorithm incorporates a novel event-triggered refinement mechanism, which refines the utilized quantization level to enhance the precision of the estimated optimal solution. It enables nodes to terminate their operation according to predefined performance guarantees. Our third algorithm is tailored to operate in environments where each message consists of only a few bits. It incorporates a novel event-triggered mechanism for adjusting the quantizer basis and quantization level, allowing nodes to collaboratively decide operation termination based on predefined performance criteria. We analyze the three algorithms and establish their linear convergence. Finally, an application on distributed sensor fusion for target localization is used to demonstrate their favorable performance compared to existing algorithms in the literature. © 2025, CC BY.

In recent years, the number of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications has increased. However, navigating them indoors is still tricky because no GPS signals are available, and the obstacles constantly change. This study exploits the collaboration between convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and reinforcement learning (RL) to overcome these challenges, improving the level of independence of UAVs in indoor settings. We present a new technique known as potential-based reward shaping, which directly incorporates expert knowledge into the reinforcement learning framework. This technique efficiently addresses the problem of sparse rewards that often hinder learning in conventional RL configurations. In addition, we have created a reflective reinforcement learning agent that systematically assesses its actions to prioritize those that result in the most substantial enhancements. We have extensively evaluated the performance of our method with the High-Definition Indoor Navigation (HDIN) dataset to show that our method continuously outperformed current non-introspective RL techniques in terms of decision-making speed and navigation accuracy in this evaluation. The results show that this new CNN-RL combination is feasible and suggests a scalable method for complex indoor navigation problems. © 2024 IEEE.

The management of a daily diet is a significant concern among individuals in modern culture. The utilization of dietary assessment systems has significantly contributed to the efficient management of malnutrition and dietary habits over a period of time. In order to determine the nutritional value of the food that individuals consume, this study introduces a novel food monitoring system and its architecture. By creating a dataset of food images in a tray and using image processing, machine learning, and computer vision techniques, the nutrients and calories consumed by a patient are calculated. The proposed system achieves a 95.6% Intersection over Union score in the segmentation task, 92.3% top-1 accuracy in the classification task, and 4.6 g mean weight absolute error in the weight estimation *** Relevance: The proposed system has the ability to calculate the nutritional composition, encompassing calories, proteins, fats, and carbs, of food consumed by a patient, making it suitable for nutritional monitoring applications and healthcare systems that aim to monitor malnutrition in hospital patients. © 2023 IEEE.

Microgrid (MG) networks, with their diverse energy sources and storage systems, represent complex higher-order systems (HOS). Analyzing such networks is challenging due to the uncertainty associated with energy sources like solar and wind power. To address this complexity, reduced-order models (ROMs) are essential, achieved through order reduction techniques. This article presents a method to reduce the eighth-order transfer function of an islanded microgrid to a second-order model. The reduction involves truncation reduction technique (TRT) for the numerator and Routh approximation reduction technique (RART) for the denominator. A comparative analysis is conducted between the original higher-order islanded microgrid system and its ROM. The comparison includes various error indices to determine the effectiveness of the ROM. Graphical representations of impulse, Nichols, step, Nyquist, and Bode responses are provided for both the original system and the ROM to visually compare their performances. This study demonstrates the practical application of mixed reduction techniques to simplify complex microgrid models, making them more manageable for analysis and design purposes.

This paper presents the results of the investigation of the power supply system of the autonomous monitoring system. In particular, calculations of the system's daily balance of energy consumption were performed. Also, the question of the influence of the angle of inclination of solar converters on energy generation is considered and the necessity of collecting solar radiation during the whole daylight, not focusing on the maximum amount of energy, is substantiated. This research aimed to develop an algorithm for calculating the power supply system for autonomous monitoring systems. The proposed algorithm takes into account the coordination of diagrams of generation and consumption of energy within the autonomous monitoring station and statistical analysis of information from the NASA website. Experiments have shown the effectiveness of this method. It can be used in future design of power supply systems for autonomous monitoring stations. © 2022 IEEE.

Eco-driving emerges as a cost-effective and efficient strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in urban transportation networks. Acknowledging the persuasive influence of incentives in shaping driver behavior, this paper presents the ‘eco-planner,’ a digital platform devised to promote eco-driving practices in urban transportation. At the outset of their trips, users provide the platform with their trip details and travel time preferences, enabling the eco-planner to formulate personalized eco-driving recommendations and corresponding incentives, while adhering to its budgetary constraints. Upon trip completion, incentives are transferred to users who comply with the recommendations and effectively reduce their emissions. By comparing our proposed incentive mechanism with a baseline scheme that offers uniform incentives to all users, we demonstrate that our approach achieves superior emission reductions and increased user compliance with a smaller budget.

Estimating high-dimensional covariance matrices is crucial in various domains. This work considers a scenario where two collaborating agents access disjoint dimensions of m samples from a high-dimensional random vector, and they can only communicate a limited number of bits to a central server, which wants to accurately approximate the covariance matrix. We analyze the fundamental trade-off between communication cost, number of samples, and estimation accuracy. We prove a lower bound on the error achievable by any estimator, highlighting the impact of dimensions, number of samples, and communication budget. Furthermore, we present an algorithm that achieves this lower bound up to a logarithmic factor, demonstrating its near-optimality in practical settings.

This paper considers an incremental Volt/Var control scheme for distribution systems with high integration of inverter-interfaced distributed generation (such as photovoltaic systems). The incremental Volt/Var controller is implemented with the objective of minimizing reactive power usage while maintaining voltages within safe limits sufficiently often. To this end, the parameters of the incremental Volt/Var controller are obtained by solving a chance-constrained optimization problem, where constraints are designed to ensure that voltage violations do not occur more often than a pre-specified probability. This approach leads to cost savings in a controlled, predictable way, while still avoiding significant over- or under-voltage issues. The proposed chance-constrained problem is solved using a successive convex approximation method. Once the gains are broadcast to the inverters, no additional communication is required since the controller is implemented locally at the inverters. The proposed method is successfully tested on a low-voltage single-phase 42-nodes network and on the three-phase unbalanced IEEE 123-node test system. © 2024, CC BY.
