Ingestible capsules have the potential to become an attractive alternative to traditional means of treating and detecting gastrointestinal(GI)*** device complexity increases,so too does the demand for more effective capsule packaging technologies to elegantly target specific GI *** pH-responsive coatings have been traditionally used for the passive targeting of specific GI regions,their application is limited due to the geometric restrictions imposed by standard coating ***,pan,and spray coating methods only enable the protection of microscale unsupported openings against the harsh GI ***,some emerging technologies have millimeter-scale components for performing functions such as sensing and drug *** this end,we present the freestanding region-responsive bilayer(FRRB),a packaging technology for ingestible capsules that can be readily applied for various functional ingestible capsule *** bilayer is composed of rigid polyethylene glycol(PEG)under a flexible pH-responsive Eudragit®FL 30 D 55,which protects the contents of the capsule until it arrives in the targeted intestinal *** FRRB can be fabricated in a multitude of shapes that facilitate various functional packaging mechanisms,some of which are demonstrated *** this paper,we characterize and validate the use of this technology in a simulated intestinal environment,confirming that the FRRB can be tuned for small intestinal *** also show a case example where the FRRB is used to protect and expose a thermomechanical actuator for targeted drug delivery.

Traditionally, attendance is marked manually by students writing down their name on a paper. This whole process wastes some of lecture time and might even get lost. Maintaining the attendance of the students in an institution is a hefty task. This project aims at designing a smart attendance system that automatically monitors and manages attendance of the students in an institution efficiently. The system is developed with an Arduino ESP8266 Wi-Fi microcontroller deployed in the class room. Further, Wi-Fi communication modules was used to make convenient communication between the student’s devices e.g. phone or laptop and the ESP8266 Wi-Fi microcontroller. Database was created where the attendance submitted will be logged and saved. Internet is utilized to transfer the information collected by the micro controller to the database and from the database to the front-end web page GUI graphical user interface. The students and admin will make one-time registration and subsequently establishing a Wi-Fi connection between the student’s device and the microcontroller in the class to mark an attendance. This system will arrange the attendance in a list with a real time timestamp and save it to database, and also be accessible to the lecturer/Admin over internet any time with uses of web browser e.g. Google chrome through the front end graphic user interface (GUI). This system is useful to reduce manual method of attendance by teachers and to alleviate the spread of COVID-19. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Harmonic distortion in power systems is a significant concern that impacts the efficiency, reliability, and safety of electrical networks. Implementing effective harmonic distortion mitigation solutions, such as filters or advanced control systems, can be expensive and may necessitate substantial changes to existing infrastructure. This paper proposes a Triple-Memristor Hopfield Neural Network (TMHNN) as a novel method for mitigating harmonic distortion in power systems. The main objective of the proposed approach is to improve the quality of power by mitigating the harmonics. The TMHNN is used to predict the actual harmonic current injected by specific harmonic sources within a power system. The results demonstrate the significant advantages of the proposed TMHNN method over existing techniques such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). TMHNN achieves the highest efficiency at 96.3%, lowest error rate at 4.16% and minimizing total harmonic distortion (THD), with the lowest value of 3.74%. These results highlight TMHNN's superior performance in terms of efficiency, harmonic distortion reduction, and accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

Augmented Reality (AR) Supporting Citizen Engagement in Circular Economy

Improving the public’s awareness of and engagement with sustainable practices is essential for transitioning from a linear to a circular economy (CE). This task is not trivial;however, research into new ways of effectively supporting awareness and engagement, especially in view of digitalization trends, is still missing. In this study, we investigate the ability of augmented reality (AR) technology to improve awareness of CE practices and to engage citizens, inclusively, in the CE approach. Specifically, we report on the development of a novel AR engagement tool and present the results of two studies undertaken using this tool to assess the reliability and validity of this engagement practice. The first study focuses on the citizens of a municipality in Greece, and the second focuses on the general public outside the municipality boundaries. Attributes related to user engagement, such as novelty, aesthetics, perceived usability, endurability, focused attention, self-efficacy, perceived learning, and interest in the topic, were assessed, as were factors affecting these attributes related to the participants’ knowledge of CE principles and exposure to similar technologies. The two studies indicate that the AR engagement tool increased social inclusion and community cohesion and was able to successfully bring CE principles and benefits to the public’s attention. Higher engagement levels were observed in participants who had limited exposure to the concept of CE prior to using the AR tool, and its use was found to improve their confidence and interest in CE. This study aspires to contribute to the ongoing discourse on the use of mobile AR and to support further evidence-based development of digital tools for public awareness and engagement. © 2022, The Author(s).

Robotic manipulators are essential for future autonomous systems, yet limited trust in their autonomy has confined them to rigid, task-specific systems. The intricate configuration space of manipulators, coupled with the challenges of obstacle avoidance and constraint satisfaction, often makes motion planning the bottleneck for achieving reliable and adaptable autonomy. Recently, a class of constant-time motion planners (CTMP) was introduced. These planners employ a preprocessing phase to compute data structures that enable online planning provably guarantee the ability to generate motion plans, potentially sub-optimal, within a user defined time bound. This framework has been demonstrated to be effective in a number of time-critical tasks. However, robotic systems often have more time allotted for planning than the online portion of CTMP requires, time that can be used to improve the solution. To this end, we propose an anytime refinement approach that works in combination with CTMP algorithms. Our proposed framework, as it operates as a constant time algorithm, rapidly generates an initial solution within a user-defined time threshold. Furthermore, functioning as an anytime algorithm, it iteratively refines the solution’s quality within the allocated time budget. This enables our approach to strike a balance between guaranteed fast plan generation and the pursuit of optimization over time. We support our approach by elucidating its analytical properties, showing the convergence of the anytime component towards optimal solutions. Additionally, we provide empirical validation through simulation and real-world demonstrations on a 6 degree-of-freedom robot manipulator, applied to an assembly domain.

This paper presents a computationally-efficient method for evaluating the feasibility of Quadratic Programs (QPs) for online constrained control. Based on the duality principle, we first show that the feasibility of a QP can be determined by the solution of a properly-defined Linear Program (LP). Our analysis yields a LP that can be solved more efficiently compared to the original QP problem, and more importantly, is simpler in form and can be solved more efficiently compared to existing methods that assess feasibility via LPs. The computational efficiency of the proposed method compared to existing methods for feasibility evaluation is demonstrated in comparative case studies as well as a feasible-constraint selection problem, indicating its promise for online feasibility evaluation of optimization-based controllers. © 2025, CC BY.

Prediabetes is a common health condition that often goes undetected until it progresses to type 2 diabetes. Early identification of prediabetes is essential for timely intervention and prevention of complications. This research explores the feasibility of using wearable continuous glucose monitoring along with smartwatches with embedded inertial sensors to collect glucose measurements and acceleration signals respectively, for the early detection of prediabetes. We propose a methodology based on signal processing and machine learning techniques. Two feature sets are extracted from the collected signals, based both on a dynamic modeling of the human glucose-homeostasis system and on the Glucose curve, inspired by three major glucose related blood tests. Features are aggregated per individual using bootstrap. Support Vector Machines are used to classify normoglycemic vs. prediabetic individuals. We collected data from 22 participants for evaluation. The results are highly encouraging, demonstrating high sensitivity and precision. This work is a proof of concept, highlighting the potential of wearable devices in prediabetes assessment. Future directions involve expanding the study to a larger, more diverse population and exploring the integration of CGM and smartwatch functionalities into a unified device. Three-way trade-off in multi-objective learning: optimization, generalization and conflict-avoidance

Multi-objective learning (MOL) often arises in machine learning problems when there are multiple data modalities or tasks. One critical challenge in MOL is the potential conflict among different objectives during the optimization process. Recent works have developed various dynamic weighting algorithms for MOL, where the central idea is to find an update direction that avoids conflicts among objectives. Albeit its appealing intuition, empirical studies show that dynamic weighting methods may not outperform static ones. To understand this theory-practice gap, we focus on a stochastic variant of MGDA, the Multi-objective gradient with Double sampling (MoDo), and study the generalization performance and its interplay with optimization through the lens of algorithmic stability in the framework of statistical learning theory. We find that the key rationale behind MGDA--updating along conflict-avoidant direction--may hinder dynamic weighting algorithms from achieving the optimal O(1/√n) population risk, where n is the number of training samples. We further demonstrate the impact of dynamic weights on the three-way trade-off among optimization, generalization, and conflict avoidance unique in MOL. We showcase the generality of our theoretical framework by analyzing other algorithms under the framework. Experiments on various multi-task learning benchmarks are performed to demonstrate the practical applicability. Code is available at https://***/heshandevaka/Trade-Off-MOL.

In semiconductor manufacturing, multicluster tools are widely employed for many wafer fabrication processes. With the demand for high-mix integrated circuit chips and shrinkage of circuit width, a scheme in which multiple wafer types are fabricated inside multicluster tools is adopted by wafer foundries to make more profits. Multiple wafer types, multiple robots, and wafer residency time constraints make the resulting scheduling problems challenging. This work focuses on scheduling a single-arm multicluster tool to process two wafer types concurrently subject to wafer residency time constraints in which a conventional one-wafer cycle and backward strategy are not efficient. With such properties, several necessary and sufficient conditions are presented to check the feasibility of a periodic schedule. Polynomial-time-complex algorithms are proposed to examine a tool's schedulability and coordinate multiple robots to handle wafers for schedulable scenarios. The cycle time of an obtained schedule can reach the lower bound. A practical example is used to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.
