This paper explores the integration of quantum computing, specifically quantum annealing, into robotics for inspecting electrical transmission lines. By using quantum annealing's computational power, we address the dynamics of robot inspectors on transmission line conductors, enhancing the computational efficiency of managing the movements of robot inspectors on transmission line conductors. The use of these robots is crucial for performing efficient and safe inspections. We discuss the mathematical foundations of quantum annealing, transforming differential equations governing robot dynamics into Ising model Hamiltonians suitable for quantum annealing devices. Through experiments using D-Wave's 'Advantage' quantum annealer, we demonstrate the viability of quantum annealing in solving complex robotics problems, paving the way for advanced applications in the field. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper presents a family of novel light blob shape descriptors for use in selected active safety algorithms used in Advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS). One of the motivations was to obtain a descriptor that would ensure low computational complexity. This makes it easy to implement both in software and hardware. One assumption is that the location of the center of a given light spot is approximately known. The principle of its operation is then to count white pixels in selected directions, starting from this central point. A key issue here is an efficient way of determining indexes of particular pixels belonging to the image patch, as well as the location of points representing places where the white area turns into black. In the case of a hardware implementation, this can be done using a parallel circuit operating in asynchronous mode, without the need for a control clock. © 2023 IEEE.

The neuron doctrine defines the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, which drives the dynamic behavior of our organs. This has led to neurons becoming the focus of modern neuroscience research and to the rise of neurocomputing, in which we try to digitally simulate human behavior. The goal being to better understand the human nervous system and gain more control over neuron-related diseases, helping doctors establish faster and more reliable medical diagnoses. In this context, we aim to simulate eye diseases and vision problems by convolving input images using a new class of neural networks based on a variable structure model of neurons presented in [1]. In this work, we focus on recreating the common convolution filters as a first step. This is the first time in neurocomputing literature that dendritic neurons have been used for dynamic convolution kernels generation and eye diseases simulation. We start with a presentation of our upgrades to the model’s flexibility and accuracy. Then, we propose a novel kernel generator algorithm to convolve the input images. Finally, we show its promising results in creating the outline, pixelization, and night convolution kernels, as well as control some metrics, including brightness and data retention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Thunderstorm detection based on the Atmospheric Electric Field(AEF)has evolved from time-domain models to space-domain *** is especially important to evaluate and determine the particularly Weather Attribute(WA),which is directly related to the detection reliability and *** this paper,a strategy is proposed to integrate three currently competitive WA's evaluation ***,a conventional evaluation method based on AEF statistical indicators is *** evaluation approaches include competing AEF-based predicted value intervals,and AEF classification based on fuzzy *** AEF attributes contribute to a more accurate AEF classification to different *** resulting dynamic weighting applied to these attributes improves the classification *** evaluation method is applied to evaluate the WA of a particular AEF,to obtain the corresponding evaluation *** integration in the proposed strategy takes the form of a score *** cumulative score levels correspond to different final WA *** imaging is performed to visualize thunderstorm activities using those AEFs already evaluated to exhibit thunderstorm *** results confirm that the proposed strategy effectively and reliably images thunderstorms,with a 100%accuracy of WA *** is the first study to design an integrated thunderstorm detection strategy from a new perspective of WA evaluation,which provides promising solutions for a more reliable and flexible thunderstorm detection.

Composing Synergistic Macro Actions for Reinforcement Learning Agents

Macro actions have been demonstrated to be beneficial for the learning processes of an agent and have encouraged a variety of techniques to be developed for constructing more effective ones. However, previous techniques usually do not further consider combining macro actions to form a synergistic macro action ensemble, in which synergism exhibits when the constituent macro actions are favorable to be jointly used by an agent during evaluation. Such a synergistic macro action ensemble may potentially allow an agent to perform even better than the individual macro actions within it. Motivated by the recent advances of neural architecture search (NAS), in this brief, we formulate the construction of a synergistic macro action ensemble as a Markov decision process (MDP) and evaluate the constructed macro action ensemble as a whole. Such a problem formulation enables synergism to be taken into account by the proposed evaluation procedure. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework is able to discover the synergistic macro action ensembles. Furthermore, we also highlight the benefits of these macro action ensembles through a set of analytical cases. © 2012 IEEE.

Automatic Speaker Identification (ASI) is so crucial for security. Current ASI systems perform well in quiet and clean surroundings. However, in noisy situations, the robustness of an ASI system against additive noise and interference is a crucial factor. An investigation of the impact of interference on ASI system performance is presented in this paper, which introduces algorithms for achieving high ASI system performance. The objective is to resist the interference of various forms. This paper presents two models for the ASI task in the presence of interference. The first one depends on Normalized Pitch Frequency (NPF) and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) as extracted features and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) as a classifier. In this model, we investigate the utilization of a Discrete Transform (DT), such as Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Sine Transform (DST), to increase the robustness of extracted features against different types of degradation through exploiting the sub-band decomposition characteristics of DWT and the energy compaction property of DCT and DST. This is achieved by extracting features directly from contaminated speech signals in addition to features extracted from discrete transformed signals to create hybrid feature vectors. The enhancement techniques, such as Spectral Subtraction (SS), Winer Filter, and adaptive Wiener filter, are used in a preprocessing stage to eliminate the effect of the interference on the ASI system. In the second model, we investigate the utilization of Deep Learning (DL) based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with speech signal spectrograms and their Radon transforms to increase the robustness of the ASI system against interference effects. The focus of this study is to investigate how digital media use affects the daily activities, emotional well-being, and general lifestyle of high school students in relation to education amidst concerns about a 'new terrain or venue' for learning in an era moving full swing towards digitization. The study, conducted with students from grades 9-11, seeks to identify overall trends and associations involving digital media interactions: considering both byproducts of using new technology as an educational tool- in addition discursive aspects allowing for different forms of distraction. In summary, the results showed that digital media use is common and often regarded as educationally beneficial or a positive form of relaxation;however, daily activities are it affected by substantial adverse impacts on everyday life and time management. Suggestions focus on supporting healthy digital media habits, including content-wise engagement and time management tools. © 2024 IEEE.

The invention of artificial intelligence and natural language processing has revolutionised human-machine interaction, and OpenAI's ChatGPT models are at the forefront of this. GPT-3 and GPT-4 models generate human-like text, answer questions and perform all kinds of language-related tasks. ChatGPT relies heavily on the quality of the requests it receives. This paper addresses the issue of efficient prompting in order to maximise its potential. Different prompting techniques are described in the paper: prompt template design, continuous prompts, few-shot learning, chain of thought prompting and metadata expansion. The conclusions show that learning how to write good prompts is crucial for realizing the full potential of ChatGPT in various natural language processing tasks. © 2024 IEEE.

In the last three years, a new partner has emerged for teachers and educators in the field of education. The mushrooming of applications based on large language models has greatly shaped the educational development fields of the present era. The use of various AI applications has become commonplace among students and teachers alike. Many questions are being raised by researchers in this field. What does the rapid development of AI applications bring to the field of pedagogy? Should the products of such applications be compared with human performance? The form presented in this thesis seeks to answer similar questions. What is the impact of frequent use of these applications on the literacy level of individuals? In which areas do students tend to use these applications? The results indicate that half of the students believe their literacy levels will decrease with the mass emergence of AI applications, while 36% feel it will not change. However, 88 % of students have already dealt with AI-based applications, with 64 % using them several times or more, suggesting a high level of integration into their educational processes. © 2024 IEEE.

During the COVID19 epidemic, people of all ages from all walks of life around the world have become inevitably familiar with and almost dependent on the digital tools of the age and the opportunities they offer. A change had to take place very quickly that was unprecedented. This process has also affected education. During the time of the reading lock-in, there was a proliferation of digital curricular content. The second time around, online education came to the fore, thanks to less or well-functioning online platforms, and has since become part of everyday teaching. What is the effectiveness and usefulness of sharing knowledge in this way? Is literacy still needed at all? Can online and hybrid (a controlled mix of face-to-face and online) education replace the well-established contact and face-to-face education? The study show that the respondents believe that online education has had an impact on literacy and that it is perceived to have a positive impact. The results indicate that online education has a positive impact on the literacy levels of students, as it facilitates knowledge acquisition and enhances digital literacy skills. © 2024 IEEE.
