We study the problem of estimating the stationary mass--also called the unigram mass-- that is missing from a single trajectory of a discrete-time, ergodic Markov chain. This problem has several applications--for example, estimating the stationary missing mass is critical for accurately smoothing probability estimates in sequence models. While the classical Good-Turing estimator from the 1950s has appealing properties for i.i.d. data, it is known to be biased in the Markovian setting, and other heuristic estimators do not come equipped with guarantees. Operating in the general setting in which the size of the state space may be much larger than the length n of the trajectory, we develop a linear-runtime estimator called Windowed Good-Turing (WINGIT) and show that its risk decays as Õ(Tmix/n), where Tmix denotes the mixing time of the chain in total variation distance. Notably, this rate is independent of the size of the state space and minimax-optimal up to a logarithmic factor in n/Tmix. We also present an upper bound on the variance of the missing mass random variable, which may be of independent interest. We extend our estimator to approximate the stationary mass placed on elements occurring with small frequency in the trajectory. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of our estimators both in simulations on canonical chains and on sequences constructed from natural language text.

With the recent advancements in machine learning (ML) theory, a lot of energy-efficient neural network (NN) accelerators have been developed. However, their associated side-channel security vulnerabilities pose a major concern. There have been several proof-of-concept attacks demonstrating the extraction of their model parameters and input data. This work introduces a threshold implementation (TI) masking-based NN accelerator that secures model parameters and inputs against power and electromagnetic (EM) side-channel attacks. The 0.159 mm2 demonstration in 28 nm runs at 125 MHz at 0.95 V and limits the area and energy overhead to 64% and 5.5× , respectively, while demonstrating security even greater than 2M traces. The accelerator also secures model parameters through encryption and the inputs against horizontal power analysis (HPA) attacks. © 2022 IEEE.

The paper presents project and its verification of a prototype integrated circuit containing an analog, programmable finite impulse response (FIR) filter, implemented in CMOS 350 nm technology. The structure of the filter is based on the switched capacitor technique. In circuits of this type, one of main challenges is an efficient implementation of filter coefficients, which result from several factors described in this work. When implementing such filters as programmable circuits, the values of their coefficients have to be limited to a selected range, i.e. a given resolution in bits. In the implemented prototype filter, the filter coefficients are represented by 6 bits in sign-magnitude notation, so they can take 63 different values only. In such filters, it is not possible to directly implement any frequency response of the filter. Each time, it is necessary to properly round the theoretical values of the coefficients so that they fit into the available range of discrete values resulting from the implementation. The authors of the work designed an algorithm that allows such matching. A Network Slice (NS) is a set of network resources deployed to deliver premium service to a group of users as described in a Service Level Agreement (SLA). We consider that premium service entails per user Quality of Service (QoS) requirements instead of aggregate NS metrics as in the majority of the literature. Since the users in a NS may run applications with different QoS requirements, aggregate metrics are inadequate. Their inefficiency is even more pronounced in Radio Access Network Slices (RANSs). In this case, even if all users run the same application, provisioning bandwidth based on aggregate metrics may violate the QoS requirements of users experiencing poorer channel conditions. To resolve this issue, we propose a method to compute the bandwidth required to deliver per user average packet delay guarantees in enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) RANSs by dimensioning a multiclass queueing system. Our method considers a varying number of NS users over time and allows the online adaptation of the NS bandwidth to its current traffic load, which significantly limits bandwidth overprovisioning. We also describe in detail how an SLA is reached between the tenant and the Network Operator (NO) based on the cdf of the required NS bandwidth. We conduct simulations to show the need for per user guarantees and the efficiency of our method. © 2023 IEEE.

We consider the tradeoff between resource efficiency and performance isolation that emerges when multiplexing the resource demands of Network Slices (NSs). On the one hand, multiplexing allows the use of idle resources, which increases resource efficiency. On the other hand, the performance of each NS becomes susceptible to traffic surges in other NSs, which degrades performance isolation. The analysis of this tradeoff enables network operators to determine the effect of performance isolation on the operating cost of each NS. To study the tradeoff, we solve an optimization problem where we find the multiplexing policy that requires the least provisioned resources to honor the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) of all NSs. The SLA of each NS i states that its resource demand should be met for PiH fraction of time, and for PiL ≤ PiH fraction of time, it should be met regardless of the demands of other NSs. For resource demands that follow ergodic Markov chains, we show that the well-known Max-Weight scheduler is an optimal multiplexing policy. Since the Max-Weight scheduler does not require any knowledge of the statistics of the resource demands, we also propose its use in non-markovian settings. For resource demands obtained in the LTE module of ns-3, we show that the Max-Weight scheduler reduces the provisioned bandwidth by 36.2% when no performance isolation is required. Lastly, for these non-markovian resource demands, the Max-Weight scheduler maintains its optimality since it requires as much provisioned bandwidth as the best non-causal scheduler. © 2023 IFIP.

Path planning for autonomous search and tracking of multiple objects is a critical problem in applications such as reconnaissance, surveillance, and data gathering. Due to the inherent competing objectives of searching for new objects while maintaining tracks for found objects, most current approaches rely on multi-objective planning methods, leaving it up to the user to tune parameters to balance between the two objectives, usually based on heuristics or trial and error. In this paper, we introduce UniSaT (Unified Search and Track), a novel unifiedobjective formulation for the search and track problem based on Random Finite Sets (RFS). Our approach models unknown and known objects using a combined generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli (GLMB) filter. For unseen objects, UniSaT leverages both cardinality and spatial prior distributions, allowing it to operate without prior knowledge of the exact number of objects in the search space. The planner maximizes the mutual information of this unified belief model, creating balanced search and tracking behaviors. We demonstrate our work in a simulated environment, presenting both qualitative results and quantitative improvements over a multi-objective method. © 2025, American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The experimental studies presented in this paper reveal that existing thermal management systems (TMS) and temperature-informed charging algorithms exhibit a response time lag of at least 5.3 minutes due to their reliance on surface temperature measurements. The results indicate that changes in the internal thermal state of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), induced by variations in charging currents, take an average of 2 minutes to manifest on the battery surface, particularly evident in cylindrical cells. Current thermal management systems for automotive battery packs solely rely on surface temperature measurements, neglecting the approximately 5.8°C temperature difference between the core and surface in TMS control. Consequently, changes in the battery's thermal state due to internal heat losses are not promptly detected by surface-mounted temperature sensors. This delayed response time accelerates battery degradation and increases the risk of thermal runaway events. In this study, temperature-informed fast charging algorithms, tested under various ambient conditions for LIBs, along with a comparative analysis, demonstrate that response time can be reduced by at least 2 minutes by considering internal temperature rather than relying solely on surface temperature measurements. Moreover, accounting for the temperature difference between the core and surface facilitates rapid TMS control and health-conscious fast charging, thereby mitigating the risk of thermal runaway events. © 2024 IEEE.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. In the typical multiagent formation tracking problem centered on consensus, the prevailing assumption in the literature is that the agents' nonlinear models can be approximated by integrator systems, by their feedback-linearized equivalents, or by dynamics composed of deterministic linear and nonlinear terms. The resulting approaches associated with such assumptions, however, are hardly applicable to general nonlinear systems. To this end, we present consensus-based control laws for multiagent formation tracking in finite-dimensional state space, with the agents represented by a more general class of dynamics: control-affine nonlinear systems. The agents also exchange information via a leader-follower communication topology modeled as an undirected and connected graph with a single leader node. By leveraging standard tools from algebraic graph theory and Lyapunov analysis, we first derive a locally asymptotically stabilizing formation tracking law. Next, to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we present results from numerical simulations of an example in robotics. These results - together with a comparison of the formation errors obtained with our approach and those realized via an optimization-based method - further validate our theoretical propositions. © 2023 IEEE.
