Deep learning based image denoising methods have been extensively investigated. In this paper, attention mechanism enhanced kernel prediction networks (AME-KPNs) are proposed for burst image denoising, in which, nearly cost-free attention modules are adopted to first refine the feature maps and to further make a full use of the inter-frame and intra-frame redundancies within the whole image burst. The proposed AME-KPNs output per-pixel spatially-adaptive kernels, residual maps and corresponding weight maps, in which, the predicted kernels roughly restore clean pixels at their corresponding locations via an adaptive convolution operation, and subsequently, residuals are weighted and summed to compensate the limited receptive field of predicted kernels. Simulations and real-world experiments are conducted to illustrate the robustness of the proposed AME-KPNs in burst image denoising. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we address output synchronization for a network of heterogeneous agents with linear time invariant single-input-single-output dynamics in the presence of communication delays. To this end, we present a three-stage modularized design procedure: (i) a parallel feedforward compensator is designed to convert the dynamics to a minimum-phase system with relative degree one, (ii) the resulting system is then transformed into a feedback equivalent to a passive system, and (iii) the agents are interconnected based on a passivity-based output synchronization law. The benefit of the present control scheme is that not only implementation but also the design stage of the controller is distributed, namely the agents do not need to know the entire network structure. The present solution is then shown to achieve output synchronization. We finally demonstrate the present controller through simulation.

This paper introduces a robust algorithm for real-time lane detection using the lane markers in urban streets or highway roads. It is based on applying Region of Interest (ROI) on the input image of the road from a calibrated camera in the front of the car, generating the top view of the image using Inverse Perspective Mapping (IPM), applying the core algorithm Line Segment Detection (LSD) which is followed by post-processing steps. Applying curve fitting to the line segments to get the right and left lines or curves. Finally, to get the output stream inverse IPM is applied. The proposed algorithm can detect the road lanes discriminating dashed and solid road lanes, straight and curved road lanes overcoming the shadow effect challenge with real-time performance 70 frames per second. © 2018 IEEE.

Object depth estimation is the cornerstone of many visual analytics systems. In recent years there is a considerable progress has been made in this area, while robust, efficient, and precise depth estimation in the real-world video remains a challenge. The approach utilized in this presented paper is to estimate the distance of surrounding cars using a mono camera. Using YOLO (You Only Look Once) in the detection process, by generating a boundary box surrounding the object, then an inversion proportional correlation between the distance and the boundary box's dimensions (height, width) is ascertained. Getting the exact equation between the studied variables;the dependent variables are the distance, and independent variable is the height and width of YOLO boundary box. In the regression model, multiple regression techniques were acclimated to evade heteroskedasticity and multi-collinearity problems. Achieving a real-time detection with a 23 FPS (Frame Per Second) and depth estimation accuracy 80.4%. © 2018 IEEE.

Beam Squint and Channel Estimation for Wideband mmWave Massive MIMO-OFDM systems

With the increasing scale of antenna arrays in wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, the physical propagation delays of electromagnetic waves traveling across the whole array will become large and comparable to the time-domain sample period, which is known as the spatial-wideband effect. In this case, different subcarriers in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system will "see" distinct angles of arrival (AoAs) for the same path. This effect is known as beam squint, resulting from the spatial-wideband effect, and makes the approaches based on the conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) model, such as channel estimation and precoding, inapplicable. After discussing the relationship between beam squint and the spatial-wideband effect, we propose a channel estimation scheme for frequency-division duplex (FDD) mmWave massive MIMO-OFDM systems with hybrid analog/digital precoding, which takes the beam squint effect into consideration. A super-resolution compressed sensing approach is developed to extract the frequency-insensitive parameters of each uplink channel path, i.e., the AoA and the time delay, and the frequency-sensitive parameter, i.e., the complex channel gain. With the help of the reciprocity of these frequency-insensitive parameters in FDD systems, the downlink channel estimation can be greatly simplified, where only limited pilots are needed to obtain downlink complex gains and reconstruct downlink channels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of xanthan gum (XG) on physicochemical, rheological and textural properties of gluten-free batter and bread. Batches of gluten-free bread used a base formulation of rice, corn and quinoa flour, and different levels of XG (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5%) and water content (WC;90, 100 and 110%) in a full factorial design. Although in interaction with water, higher XG doses tended to produce batters of lower stickiness, work of adhesion, strength-cohesiveness;which, when baked, produced loaves of lower specific volume and baking loss;and bread crumb of lower Aw, pH, hardness, springiness, firmness, mean cell area, void fraction, mean cell aspect ratio, and higher firmness, consistency, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, chewiness, resilience, cell density, cell size uniformity and mean cell compactness (p © 2018 EUROSIS-ETI.

We propose a decentralized digital contact tracing service that preserves the users’ privacy by design while complying to the highest security standards. Our approach is based on Bluetooth and measures actual encounters of people, the contact time period, and estimates the proximity of the contact. We trace the users’ contacts and the possible spread of infectious diseases while preventing location tracking of users, protecting their data and identity. We verify and improve the impact of tracking based on epidemiological models. We compare a centralized and decentralized approach on a legal perspective and find a decentralized approach preferable considering proportionality and data minimization. Metal detectors are widely used to detect and localize land mines, as well as metallic clutter that causes many false alarms. These false alarms are handled by manual inspection with a prodder or using extra features like size and depth as well as fusion with other sensors like ground penetrating radar or chemical sensors. Directly shape itself has never been used, mainly due to infeasibility of the results of the few existing studies, which require controlled environments and dense sampling of the target objects. In this paper, we propose a new method for shape reconstruction that works with sparse data, and show its feasibility using field data collected by a mobile robot equipped with a commercial pulse induction metal detector carried by a custom 2DoF arm. This paper also describes the method employed to sweep natural terrains with the mobile manipulator and provides results of imaging a set of different metallic objects. © 2017 IEEE.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables are expected to be used in the future in electric ships that will have integrated power and energy systems (IPES). There have been a few studies on understanding electrical faults in power systems consisting of HTS cables; however, there are no comprehensive studies on the response of HTS cables for various types of electrical faults. We have recently initiated a research project on understanding various electrical faults in shipboard medium voltage direct current (MVDC) power systems and the duration of the fault, maximum voltage, and maximum current that the HTS cables will encounter during the fault. This paper presents investigations on the potential cable architectures being developed for MVDC power systems, and the type of faults that HTS cables will encounter in such systems. The paper will assess the relative merits of these architectures in terms of their suitability for accommodating the limitations of cryogenically cooled HTS cables and offer design suggestions for resilient power systems. electrical and cryogenic thermal models of HTS cables that are suitable for assessing the response of HTS cables for electrical faults, as well as HTS cable designs that can endure electrical faults without catastrophic damage will also be discussed.

KAGRA is a 3-km interferometric gravitational wave telescope located in the Kamioka mine in Japan. It is the first km-class gravitational wave telescope constructed underground to reduce seismic noise, and the first km-class telescope to use cryogenic cooling of test masses to reduce thermal noise. The construction of the infrastructure to house the interferometer in the tunnel, and the initial phase operation of the interferometer with a simple 3-km Michelson configuration have been completed. The first cryogenic operation is expected in 2018, and the observing runs with a full interferometer are expected in 2020s. The basic interferometer configuration and the current status of KAGRA are described. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
