We aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28-d of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Earthworms exposed to CNFs showed a redox imbalance in the seminal vesicle, muscle, and intestine and an alteration in nitric oxide production in these organs. In muscles, we also noticed a significant reduction in AChE activity in earthworms exposed to CNFs. The histopathological analyses revealed the treatments' significant effect on the structures of the different evaluated tissues. When taken together and after applying IBRv2 and PCA, we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. Although the ecotoxicity of carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) is known, the potential effect of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on edaphic organisms has not been evaluated. Thus, we aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28 days of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Earthworms exposed to CNFs showed a redox imbalance in the seminal vesicle, muscle, and intestine and an alteration in nitric oxide production in these organs. Although we did not notice a concentration-response for several of the biomarkers, when taken together and after the application of IBRv2 and principal component analysis (PCA), we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. This was mainly determined by inhibiting antioxidant activity in the seminal vesicle, biochemical biomarkers assessed in muscle and intestine, and histomorphometric muscle biomarkers from earthworms exposed to CNFs at 100 mg/kg. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. Manufacturing maraging steel components using laser-based powder bed fusion (LPBF) presents an attractive proposition for industries due to the material's combination of mechanical properties such as hardness, wear resistance, and toughness, and the capability to produce parts with complex geometries and high precision. Despite these advantages, the LPBF process induces defects such as distortion and residual stress associated with the complex thermal cycles, compromising final part quality. Numerical simulations have been developed to predict these defects. However, LPBF simulations remain challenging due to the complexity of the process and the substantial computational resources required. For maraging steel, for example, the occurrence of phase transformation promotes compressive stress that interferes in results and makes simulations inaccurate. This research aims to simulate a geometry with a circular inner channel and investigate distortion, volume fraction of martensite and equivalent stress results. Modeling was performed by varying phase transformation rate parameters to assess the impact of transformations on simulation outcomes. Results showed minimal impact of these parameters on distortions and equivalent stress. Equivalent stress results were compared with literature findings, while distortion results were validated against experimental data to validate the accuracy of the model. © 2024, The Authors. Industry 4.0 is a transformative initiative that integrates various technologies and reshapes industrial processes, production methods, and business models. However, forecasting future events within this paradigm shift presents significant challenges. Predicting the cycle time for new product development (NPD) in a dynamic and competitive environment, especially in a highly globalized market driven by innovation, is crucial. Previous research has shown that prototype manufacturing lead times are key parameters for predicting NPD times-to-market. This study investigates the predictive capabilities of artificial intelligence algorithms in estimating manufacturing lead times under varying part geometries and materials at an aerospace and medical equipment company. By leveraging predictive analysis and machine learning techniques, specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) algorithms, the proposed methodology demonstrates its efficacy and variations. The results show that top-performing models achieve an accuracy rate exceeding 87 % and an average absolute error of less than one day, which have significant practical benefits for project production planners. They can utilize the most popular AI frameworks on easier-to-use programming platforms to estimate the time required to manufacture their prototypes, predict their new product development (NPD) cycle times, and negotiate lead times for in-house and third-party manufacturing more effectively, thereby improving project planning and delivery.

In this paper, we propose a flexible passive RFID tag using a Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) structure for antenna gain enhancement. The tag is based on a folded dipole antenna and 8 CSRR cells in the same layer, on a polyamide substrate. Simulation results performed in the ANSYS Electronics Desktop software are presented. It has been shown that with the insertion of the metamaterial structure there is a considerable improvement in some parameters of the antenna, such as directivity, efficiency and, consequently, gain. The gain of the antenna increased, approximately, from -6.8 dB to 5.3 dB. In addition, a read range of approximately 24.21 m was obtained at the operating frequency (915 MHz) with the metamaterial-based antenna. © 2019 IEEE.

The chemicals in post-tanning are partially retained by the leather, and the fractions remaining in the process are discharged with the wastewater. Current literature has an extensive number of studies characterizing tannery effluents. However, few studies have evaluated how groups of chemicals applied to the leather impact the quality of wastewater generated in the process. Thus, this study aims to evaluate and reduce the impact of chemicals used in the post-tanning process on the main quality parameters of the wastewater. The assessment and reduction of the pollution load of leather chemicals were carried out using a formulation from a Brazilian tannery as a case study. Results showed that retanning agents (natural and synthetic tannins) were responsible for high inorganic pollution load in the wastewater, and the synthetic tannins were more toxic than the natural ones. The fatliquoring agents were responsible for the highest chemical oxygen demand load in the wastewater and were the chemical group that presented the highest cytotoxicity. The fixing agent and the dye contributed to the inorganic pollution load of the wastewater, and the nitrogen load of the wastewater was mainly related to the neutralizing retanner and the dye. The adjustment of the chemicals supply showed depletion in the pollution load of wastewater. The obtained leather showed quality within the required specifications of the tannery, and the formulation cost was reduced by 24%. © 2021 XXXVI International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies Congress 2021, IULTCS 2021. The design of a bio-inspired butterfly-shaped patch antenna array, generated by polar transformations, covering the wireless local area network (WLAN) band at 2.4 GHz (2.400-2.483 GHz), with similar and dissimilar elements is presented in this paper. The dissimilar bio-inspired antenna presented a bandwidth of 96MHz covering the IEEE802.11b, g band, maximum gain of 8.64dBi, concentrated half power beamwidth of 52 degrees and front-to-back ratio of 15.21dB.

Brazil is currently the sixth world largest lubricating oil consumer,as a result,the sixth largest used lubricating oil (ULO) producer,with an annual ULO production of about one million ***,due to the environmental consequences and also to the large amount of this waste,it becomes necessary to quantify and qualify the impacts resulting from ULO management *** study evaluates,through the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology,the current ULO management system in southern *** comparisons regarding the environmental performance scenarios were defined with the use of eight impact categories: land use,nonrenewable energy,global warming potential,aquatic acidification potential,aquatic eutrophication potential,human toxicity potential,terrestrial ecotoxicity potential and carcinogens *** LCA was conducted based on Simapro,using the "IMPACT 2002+ for ULO v2.12/IMPACT 2002+" *** scenarios comprised the two ULO management models currently used in *** first,which is designated in the study,by TTrR scenario and the second,regarded as TsTR *** LCA results showed that the re-refine phase,in the TsTR scenario,presents lower impact when compared to the corresponding TTR scenario *** TsTR scenario presented the greatest impacts in seven categories (carcinogens,terrestrial ecotoxicity,land use,eutrophication,global warming,use of nonrenewable energy and acidification),corresponding to about 87.5％ of all the *** the contrary,the TTR scenario presented lower impacts in these seven categories,impacting more on only one category (human toxicity).In relation to transportation,the opposite occurs,transport in the TTR scenario presents a larger contribution,impacting 100％ more than transport in the TsTR *** presence of the transshipment center decreases the amount of re-refining impacts in 87.5％ of the categories in the TTR *** in the TTR scenario contributes relatively more to the fact that

Since 2015, the photovoltaic solar energy has had a significant increase of its installed power in Brazil, which has great potential for the generation of electrical energy with the use of photovoltaic systems due to its high irradiation index. However, a problem for the generation of electric energy by the means of photovoltaic systems is the fact that the shadow existence impacts directly the generation, as a result of the reduction of the incident irradiance in the panels. The factors which can cause shadow effect are the external solid bodies and cloudiness, which can have its effect on photovoltaic systems increased by the cloud position in relation to the sun. Thus, this article is a study about the cloudiness influence in a photovoltaic system connected to grid, denominated Green Office of the UTFPR. For that, clearness index analyses (Kt), the daily energy generation and the productivity (YIELD) have been analyzed for some different cloud conditions: clear skies, few clouds, high cloudiness, and considerable rainfall. The results showed the direct relation of the clearness index with the productivity and the electric generation of the panel, whose values were higher in the higher Kt cases. © European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ).
