The growing use of synthetic chemical compounds/substances in vector control of mosquitoes, associated with their adverse effects on the environment and non-target organisms, has demanded the development of eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of different cellulose microcrystalline (CMs) concentrations and investigate their toxicity mechanisms in Culex quinquefasciatus fourth instar larvae as a model species. Probit analysis revealed that the median lethal concentrations (LC) for 24 h and 36 h exposure were 100 and 58.29 mg/L, respectively. We also showed that such concentrations induced a redox imbalance in the larvae, marked by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Furthermore, different alterations in the external morphology of the larvae were associated with the ingestion of CMs. On the other hand, exposure of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to LC24h and LC36h for seven days did not induce any behavioral changes or alterations mutagenic, genotoxic, biochemical, or in the production of cytokines IFN-γ and IL-10. Thus, taken together, our study demonstrates for the first time that the use of CMs can constitute a promising strategy in the control of C. quinquefasciatus larvae, combining insecticidal efficiency with an "eco-friendly" approach in the fight against an important mosquito vector of several human diseases.

This paper presents the small-signal modeling and analysis of an isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter. The converter is implement based on two Full-Bridge converters. The system is designed to act as a charge/discharge controller for battery banks. The model for each mode of operation is developed using the average state-space model approach. To verify the models, simulations are performed using PSIM software in addition to experimental results obtained from a 200 W prototype that connects a 60 V battery bank to a 230 V DC link. © 2018 IEEE.

Plastic pollution is a widespread issue that poses a threat to agroecosystems. Recent data on microplastic (MP) pollution from compost and its application to soil have highlighted the potential impact of micropollutants that may be transferred from compost. Thus, we aim with this review to elucidate the distribution-occurrence, characterization, fate/transport, and potential risk of MPs from organic compost to gain comprehensive knowledge and mitigate the adverse impacts of compost application. The concentration of MPs in compost was up to thousands of items/kg. Among micropollutants, fibers, fragments, and films are the most common, with small MPs having a higher potential to absorb other pollutants and cause harm to organisms. Various synthetic polymers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester (PES), and acrylic polymers (AP), have been widely used of plastic items. MPs are emerging pollutants that can have diverse effects on soil ecosystems, as they can transfer potential pollutants from MPs to compost and then to the soil. Following the microbial degradation scheme, the transfer chain from plastics to compost to soil can be broken down into main stages, i.e., colonization - (bio)fragmentation - assimilation - and mineralization. Microorganisms and adding biochar play an essential role during composting, which can be an effective solution to enhance MP degradation. Findings have shown that stimulating free radical generation could promote the biodegradation efficacy of MPs and possibly remove their occurrence in compost, thereby reducing their contribution to ecosystem pollution. Furthermore, future recommendations were discussed to reduce ecosystem risks and health challenges.

The development of numerical simulations for metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes to predict distortion and residual stress is considered a strategic tool for supporting the industrialization of AM. However, the complexity of these analyses, due to the intricacies of thermal cycles, demands substantial computational resources and a deep understanding of the key process variables to achieve accurate models. This study aims to evaluate the influence of thermal parameters on the results of thermomechanical simulations using the Inherent Strain Method (ISM). Specifically, the analysis investigates the effects of estimated peak temperatures on thermal analyses, distortion, equivalent stress, and microstructure volume fraction in maraging 300 steel (MS300) parts simulated via finite elements. The results indicate that varying the peak temperature of the models causes a linear change in the thermal simulation output, referred to as the exposed energy fraction (EEF) in the Simufact Additive software, which determines the thermal history of the process in fabricated geometry. However, the distortion behavior—by the mechanical analyses that used the EEF as input—deviated from this linearity across specific regions, emphasizing the need for localized accuracy assessment within complex geometries. Equivalent stress decreased with lower peak temperatures, highlighting a correlation between these factors, while the microstructure volume fraction remained unchanged across different peak temperatures. The simulation results were validated by comparing the simulated measurements with experimental data of the same geometry manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Displacement in the simulation was assessed by comparing the diameters of the front and back faces, as well as through surface deviation analysis, which highlighted variations between the scanned experimental geometry and the simulated part. Invisible microplastics (MP) have become a significant problem worldwide in recent years. Although many studies have highlighted the sources, effects, and fate of MPs pollution on various ecosystems in developed countries, there is limited information on MPs in the marine ecosystem along the northeastern coast of the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Coastal ecosystems along the BoB coasts are critical to a biodiverse ecology that supports human survival and resource extraction. However, the multi-environmental hotspots, ecotoxicity effects, transport mechanisms, fates, and intervention measures to control MP pollution initiatives along the BoB coasts have received little attention. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the multi-environmental hotspots, ecotoxicity effects, sources, fates, and intervention measures of MP in the northeastern BoB to understand how MP spreads in the nearshore marine ecosystem. This study critically evaluates the hotspots and ecotoxic effects of pollution from MP on the coastal multi-environment, e.g., soil, sediment, salt, water, and fish, as well as current intervention measures and additional mitigation recommendations. This study identified the northeastern part of the BoB as a hotspot for MP. In addition, the transport mechanisms and fate of MP in different environmental compartments are highlighted, as are research gaps and potential future research areas. Research on the ecotoxic effects of MP on BoB marine ecosystems must be a top priority, given the increasing use of plastics and the presence of significant marine products worldwide. The knowledge gained from this study would inform decision-makers and stakeholders in a way that could reduce the impact of the legacy of micro- and nanoplastics in the area. This study also proposes structural and non-structural measures to mitigate the effects of MPs and promote sustainable management.

With the growing diffusion of the Internet of Things concept and the advances in low-power electronics, the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has gained attention in various fields, from entertainment to medicine, for example. Its sensing and signal processing capability allows us to highlight this technology as one of the main solutions in reducing cost and complexity in such applications. This work presents the design and test of a flexible RFID tag operating in the American UHF frequency of 915 MHz, for human body motion detection. Through the analysis of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) variation with time and its Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) it was possible to ensure the tag's applicability.
