The aim of this one-day workshop is to share existing research, discuss common practices, and to develop new strategies and tools for designing for social justice in HCI. This workshop will bring together a set of HCI scholars, designers, and community members to discuss social justice perspectives on interaction design and technology. We will explore theoretical and methodological approaches in and around HCI that can help us generatively consider issues of power, privilege, and access in their complexity. We will discuss the challenges associated with taking a justice approach in HCI, looking toward existing practices we find both productive and problematic. This workshop will bridge current gaps in research and practice by developing concrete strategies for both designing and evaluating social change oriented work in HCI, where agendas are made clear and researchers are held accountable for the outcomes of their work by members of their field site and the research community. © 2016 Authors.

Massive machine type communication (MTC) brings new challenges to next generation wide-area networks. Random Access Channel procedure (RACH) used in LTE-Advanced system for request delivery, for instance, is inefficient in handling massive number of concurrent access requests. The S-Aloha approach in RACH will lead to unsustainable delays and resource wastage due to collisions from concurrent access in massive MTC networks. To address this issue, we propose a distributed queue based MTC communication protocol that exploits multiple packet reception (MPR) capability of MTC devices to self-organize themselves into a logical queue in a distributed way such that the devices connect to BS depending on their positions in the queue. We derive the algorithm and present analysis of its performance in regard to delay and throughput. The algorithm behaves like S-Aloha when MTC traffic load is low and seamlessly and smoothly switches to a reservation based protocol during heavy traffic. From the simulation results, the proposed scheme exhibits better performance compared to conventional RACH procedure as it increases number of successful transmissions by 2.7 times and reduces both the average access delay and transmission failure probability by 20%.

This paper presents a 60 GHz CPW-fed patch antenna on multilayer LTCC- and LCP-based materials with new and compact AMC. The proposed antenna structure consists of top three layers of antenna and bottom three layers of AMC ground plane. First, a new and compact three-layer AMC is designed on both LTCC- and LCP-based substrates. The designed AMC is more compact and provides 37.5% higher in-phase bandwidth as compared to a state-of-the-art design. Then, a three-layer CPW-fed patch antenna is designed and optimized on LTCC- and LCP-based substrates on top of the three-layer AMC ground plane of the same material. We perform a gain-bandwidth comparative study of antennas on multilayer LTCC- and LCP-based substrates with AMC/PEC ground planes for 60 GHz. We observe that antennas on LCP-based substrate outperform those on LTCC-based substrate in terms of input impedance, bandwidth, and gains on both AMC and PEC ground planes, while antennas on LTCC-based substrate have smaller antenna and AMC dimensions.

The H-KWS 2016, organized in the context of the ICFHR 2016 conference aims at setting up an evaluation framework for benchmarking handwritten keyword spotting (KWS) examining both the Query by Example (QbE) and the Query by String (QbS) approaches. Both KWS approaches were hosted into two different tracks, which in turn were split into two distinct challenges, namely, a segmentation-based and a segmentation-free to accommodate different perspectives adopted by researchers in the KWS field. In addition, the competition aims to evaluate the submitted training-based methods under different amounts of training data. Four participants submitted at least one solution to one of the challenges, according to the capabilities and/or restrictions of their systems. The data used in the competition consisted of historical German and English documents with their own characteristics and complexities. This paper presents the details of the competition, including the data, evaluation metrics and results of the best run of each participating methods.

The evolution of social technology and research methods present ongoing challenges to studying people online. Recent high-profile cases have prompted discussion among both the research community and the general public about the ethical implications of researching humans, their information, and their activities in large-scale digital contexts. Examples of scientific and market research involving Facebook users and OKCupid clients exemplify the ethical complexities of both studying and manipulating online user behavior. When does data science become human subjects research, and what are our obligations to these subjects as researchers? Drawing from previous work around the ethics of digital research, one goal of this workshop is to work towards a set of guiding principles for CSCW scholars doing research online.

This paper will describe a novel approach to engaging under-represented high school students in research and design opportunities at a public university. The I-3 (pronounced "I three") Experience programs aim to engage 9th-12th grade African American, Latino, and female students in research and prototyping activities to increase and sustain their interest in computer science. From Spring 2011 - Spring 2012, 64 students have enrolled in the I-3 Experience programs. Our program has specifically targeted female and underrepresented students (African American and Latino/as): 85.94% of program participants are female and underrepresented students;61% of our students participated in free and reduced lunch programs. The program has a 71.79% retention rate. The I-3 Experience is a series of computing afterschool and summer-enrichment programs designed for students who are interested in exploring computing but lack courses at their school or have completed all the available Computer Science (CS) courses at their school and desire to expand their computing skills. The I-3 Experience consists of three program phases: Imagine, Investigate, and Innovate. Each of these program phases engages students in computational thinking and provides opportunities and resources for them to bring their ideas to life through the design of new applications and devices. Our goal in designing this program was to build on the success of existing K-12 summer camp outreach programs offered at Georgia Tech by offering students an opportunity to pursue their interest in CS through a constructionist and project-based curriculum. As we moved the students from exposure to personalization of the technology they developed, our aim was to increase the number of students desirous of enrolling in college as computer science majors. A ventilator system provides respiratory support to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Increasing complexity in the user interface, features and functionalities of ventilator systems can cause medical errors and cost the life of a patient. Therefore, the usability of ventilator systems is most crucial to ensure patient safety. We have evolved a specialized set of heuristics combined with objectively defined usability indicators for the usability evaluation of touch screen based ventilator systems. Our study presents the heuristic evaluation of three touch screen based ventilator systems manufactured by three different companies. The heuristic evaluation has been performed by four different usability evaluators to ensure the reliability of heuristics proposed in this paper. The specialized set of heuristics linked with user interface components and the objectively defined usability indicators are found more reliable in identifying specific usability problems of ventilator systems. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2010.

We examine the extent to which user-based subsidies can promote the sustainability and development impact of telecenters, where sustainability is defined in financial and social terms. We do this by looking at a coupon scheme used by the USAID funded eCenter network in Kyrgyzstan. The network consisted of partnerships with existing commercial computer centers which provided fee-based ICT services to their communities. The eCenter program temporarily provided subsidized coupons for Internet access and computer training to users of these centers. Using a mixed-method approach, we found that user-based subsidies have to a certain degree aided financial sustainability by bringing new users to the centers, some of who will, conceivably, become long-term customers bringing ongoing revenues. The subsidies also helped to "kick-start" operations during the initial stage of the project. However we found that the distribution of the coupons did not lead to any significant enhancements to social sustainability by, for instance, encouraging users from underrepresented social groups (though we did find that women were marginally more likely to take advantage of the program). Moreover, we found that the distribution of both Internet and training coupons favored more regular users of the eCenters. Finally, looking beyond sustainability to impact within the community, we found that the coupon program had a limited development impact on participating communities. For example, the population of users who reported economic benefits from using the eCenter (eg. subsequent employment or starting a new business), did not make more use of the coupon program than the user population at large, suggesting that the coupon program itself did not account for this benefit. We argue that, even in the presence of such modest positive effects, user-based subsidies still offer an intriguing model.
