In this paper, we present a novel method for fast generation of furniture arrangements in interior scenes. Our method exploits the benefits of optimization-based approaches for global aesthetic rules and the advantages of procedural approaches for local arrangement of small objects. We generate the furniture arrangements for a given room in two steps: We first optimize the selection and arrangement of furniture objects in a room with respect to aesthetic and functional rules. The infinite trans-dimensional space of furniture layouts is rapidly explored by greedy cost minimization. In the second step, the procedural methods are locally applied in a stochastic fashion to generate important scene details. We demonstrate that our method achieves comparable results to a recent method for automatic interior design in terms of user preferences and that local procedural design enhances the result of optimization-based interior design. Additionally, our method is one order of magnitude faster than the compared method. Finally, the execution times of up to one second show that our method is suitable for generating large-scale indoor virtual environments during runtime.

Das EU Forschungsprojekt „HOBBIT“ hat Prototypen von assistiven Robotern zur Unterstützung eines sicheren und selbstständigen Lebens entwickelt und bei älteren Personen in der häuslichen Umgebung getestet. Im Projekt „personAAL“ wurde untersucht, ob verschiedene Verhaltensweisen („Persönlichkeiten“) eines solchen Roboterprototyps bei ansonsten gleicher Funktion (Überbringen einer Nachricht) von Testpersonen als unterschiedliche Persönlichkeiten wahrgenommen werden. Der Roboter wurde mit zwei Verhaltensweisen (introvertiert/extrovertiert) ausgestattet und 13 Testpersonen (großteils älteren Personen bzw. Experten aus der Pflege) vorgeführt. Der „extrovertierte“ Roboter wurde weit überwiegend präferiert. Bei den Teilfragen „Anthropomorphismus“ und „Belebtheit“ sowie in der Gesamtbewertung wurden signifikante Wahrnehmungsunterschiede gefunden, nicht jedoch für die Teilfragen „Sympathie“ und „Sicherheit“. Es gab keinerlei signifikante Korrelation zwischen bevorzugtem Verhalten des Roboters und Selbsteinschätzung der Testperson als introvertiert oder extrovertiert. Es kann vermutet werden, dass die Akzeptanz eines Roboters nicht rein von der nüchternen Funktion abhängt, und es daher sinnvoll sein wird, für bessere Akzeptanz verschiedene Verhaltensweisen zur Wahl zu stellen.

Ultra-short-term heart rate variability analysis refers to the analysis of variability in time intervals between successive heartbeats over recordings shorter than 5 min. Recently, several studies have conducted HRV analysis on the ECG recording shorter than 5 min for predicting the onset of ventricular tachyarrhythmia. However, these studies employed the ultra-short-term HRV features without questioning its validity and reliability as a surrogate of the short-term HRV features, which served as the gold standard. Most of them applied only statistical tests, such as the student’s T-test, to rank and select the HRV features based on their significance differences between VTA and control groups. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, none of the existing work has rigorously investigated the validity and reliability of the ultra-short-term HRV features extracted from recordings shorter than 5 min in predicting the ventricular tachyarrhythmia. In this study, a total of 30 HRV features, extracted from the time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear analysis were thoroughly analysed with the corresponding short-term HRV features using the proposed inter-group and intra-group assessments based on statistical significance and correlation analysis. From the experimental findings, only 9 ultra-short-term HRV features successfully passed both the inter-group and intra-group assessments and were selected as the optimal feature subset for predicting the onset of ventricular tachyarrhythmia. With the optimal feature subset, optimistic performance was achieved with an accuracy of up to 86.39% in predicting the onset of ventricular tachyarrhythmia 2 minutes prior to its occurrence using machine learning algorithms.

Analysis of an individual’s immunoglobulin or T cell receptor gene repertoire can provide important insights into immune function. High-quality analysis of adaptive immune receptor repertoire sequencing data depends upon accurate and relatively complete germline sets, but current sets are known to be incomplete. Established processes for the review and systematic naming of receptor germline genes and alleles require specific evidence and data types, but the discovery landscape is rapidly changing. To exploit the potential of emerging data, and to provide the field with improved state-of-the-art germline sets, an intermediate approach is needed that will allow the rapid publication of consolidated sets derived from these emerging sources. These sets must use a consistent naming scheme and allow refinement and consolidation into genes as new information emerges. Name changes should be minimised, but, where changes occur, the naming history of a sequence must be traceable. Here we outline the current issues and opportunities for the curation of germline IG/TR genes and present a forward-looking data model for building out more robust germline sets that can dovetail with current established processes and provides transparency based on principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability. We describe results obtained by applying the data model and associated principles within the AIRR Community, including supporting software and databases. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Recently, there has been a remarkable increase in the demand for edge computing on the Internet of Things (IoT), which encompasses a network of interconnected devices capable of operating independently and making intelligent decisions. To enable low-power and real-time processing, spiking neural networks (SNNs) on neuromorphic computing hardware are expected to emerge as a prominent solution for supporting IoT edge computing. SNN models need to be optimized to meet the specific quality of service requirements according to a variety of IoT edge services. However, the complex dynamics and non-differentiable nature of SNNs are challenging issues for implementing the SNN models. The heterogeneity of neuromorphic computing hardware makes it more difficult to generate SNN models that meet specified requirements, such as accuracy or execution time. Existing IoT platforms support various neural functionalities, yet they are typically unsuitable for generating SNN models customized to meet user performance requirements for IoT edge computing, especially considering the neuromorphic computing hardware. In this paper, we propose an automatic SNN generation technique on neuromorphic computing hardware for IoT Edge computing. The goal is to automatically generate SNN models that efficiently balance cost while satisfying user-specified performance requirements and hardware constraints. Our proposed approach enables rapid prototyping by using a novel predictive model based on profiling results obtained from FPGA-based hardware, as well as neuromorphic hardware like Loihi. We built its implementation that is compatible with the open IoT platform Node-RED and measured its performance. The experimental results show that our approach enables the automatic generation of SNN models with an average requirement meeting ratio of over 96%, demonstrating its efficacy for IoT edge computing. Early brain tumor diagnosis has a significant role in reducing the risk of disease, as well as led to get better treatment results. Usually, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images are evaluated manually through visual inspection, which is difficult, time-consuming and often erroneous;this process is performed by radiologists or clinical experts, and its accuracy depends on their experience. Recently, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) becomes very essential to overcome these limitations. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of the existing techniques and methodologies for automated detection of brain tumor coupled with oedema detection methods utilisation, with an emphasis on machine learning models. Moreover, this paper provides an analysis of the integrated procedure that pertains to the retrieval of brain pictures by identifying particular data sets in the procedure to recognise the stipulated attributes.

Auricular branch of vagus nerve stimulation is continuously evolving as a minimal-invasive treatment option in patients suffering from chronic pain. For optimization of stimulation mechanisms, we conducted in-silico modelling of the electrode-tissue-nerve interface by a thorough literature review of the anatomical structures combined with nerve and vessel structures from episcopic images of a human ear. Four nerves and two vessels in the ear were implemented in a 3D CAD model for future optimization of stimulation regions and patterns. Mean diameters for nerves were 30 μm, and for vessels 100 μm. Mean distance between nerves and vessels was about 100 μm. © 2018 FESB, University of Split.

Feature-based groupwise registration of historical aerial images to present-day ortho-photo maps

In this paper, we address the registration of historical WWII images to present-day ortho-photo maps for the purpose of geolocalization. Due to the challenging nature of this problem, we propose to register the images jointly as a group rather than in a step-by-step manner. To this end, we exploit Hough Voting spaces as pairwise registration estimators and show how they can be integrated into a probabilistic groupwise registration framework that can be efficiently optimized. The feature-based nature of our registration framework allows to register images with a-priori unknown translational and rotational relations, and is also able to handle scale changes of up to 30% in our test data due to a final geometrically guided matching step. Identifying and planning strategies that support a healthy lifestyle or manage a chronic disease often require patient-provider collaboration. For example, people with healthy eating goals often share everyday food, exercise, or sleep data with health coaches or nutritionists to find opportunities for change, and patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often gather food and symptom data as part of working with providers to diagnose and manage symptoms. However, a lack of effective support often prevents health experts from reviewing large amounts of data in time-constrained visits, prevents focusing on individual goals, and prevents generating correct, individualized, and actionable recommendations. To examine how to design photo-based diaries to help people and health experts exchange knowledge and focus on collaboration goals when reviewing the data together, we designed and developed Foodprint, a photo-based food diary. Foodprint includes three components: (1) A mobile app supporting lightweight data collection, (2) a web app with photo-based visualization and quantitative visualizations supporting collaborative reflection, and (3) a pre-visit note communicating an individual's expectations and questions to experts. We deployed Foodprint in two studies: (1) with 17 people with healthy eating goals and 7 health experts, and (2) with 16 IBS patients and 8 health experts. Building upon the lens of boundary negotiating artifacts and findings from two field studies, our research contributes design principles to (1) prepare individuals to collect data relevant to their health goals and for collaboration, (2) help health experts focus on an individual's eating context, experiences, and goals in collaborative review, and (3) support individuals and experts to develop individualized, actionable plans and strategies. © 2019 Association for computing Machinery.
