This paper introduces the new qualitative and quantitative methods, which can diagnose breast tumors. Qualitative methods include blood vessel display inside and outside of pathological changes part of breast, display of equivalent pixel curves at the part of pathological changes and display of breast tumor image edge. Accordingly, three feature extraction operators are proposed, i.e. the combination operators of anisotropic gradient and smoothing operator, an improved Sobel operator and an edge sharpening operator. Furthermore, quantitative diagnose approaches are discussed based on blood and oxygen contents according to abundant clinical data and pathological mechanism of breast tumors. The results of clinic show that the methods of combining qualitative and quantitative diagnose are effective for breast tumor images, especially for early and potential breast cancer. © 2005 IEEE.

Gene over-expression or under-expression is closely associated with human diseases, which contributes to phenotypic variations and diversity. To our best knowledge, there is no single open specific resource available to provide the association information between gene over- or under-expression and various diseases. In this study, we presented a comprehensive disease-associated over- and under-expressed gene database （OUGene） based on our proposed text mining pipeline and several open curated databases. It contains total 41,269 unique associa- tions between 7,238 over- or under-expressed genes and 1,480 diseases, which are supported by 81,974 evidence sentences from 56,442 articles. The OUGene is compre- hensive and covers most important therapeutic areas. Meanwhile a new scoring system is designed to rank the associations based on benchmarking against hand-curated data. OUGene provides an easy-of-use web interface for researchers to analyze these data and visualize the associ- ated networks, which can give insights to the complex relationships between over- and under-expressed genes and diseases at a system level. Every archaeological excavation must deal with a vast number of ceramic fragments. The documentation, administration and scientific processing of these fragments represent a temporal, personnel, and financial problem. Up to now documentation and classification have been done manually which means a lot of routine work for archaeologists and a very inconsistent representation of the real object. First, there may be errors in the measuring process (diameter or height may be inaccurate). Second, the drawing of the fragment should be in a consistent style, which is not possible since a drawing of an object without interpreting it is very hard to do. We are developing a documentation system for archaeological fragments based on their profile, which is the cross-section of the fragment in the direction of the rotational axis of symmetry. Hence the position of a fragment (orientation) on a vessel is important, since it allows a good profile to be obtained. This paper presents two different approaches to the estimation of the orientation of archaeological fragments and the profile extraction. One method is based on a Hough inspired approach and the other is based on genetic algorithms and expert interaction. We compare the methods and show results with respect to robustness, applicability, and accuracy. © The Eurographics Association 2003.

ENHANCING KERNEL FLEXIBILITY VIA LEARNING ASYMMETRIC LOCALLY-ADAPTIVE KERNELS

The lack of sufficient flexibility is the key bottleneck of kernel-based learning that relies on manually designed, pre-given, and non-trainable kernels. To enhance kernel flexibility, this paper introduces the concept of Locally-Adaptive-Bandwidths (LAB) as trainable parameters to enhance the Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel, giving rise to the LAB RBF kernel. The parameters in LAB RBF kernels are data-dependent, and its number can increase with the dataset, allowing for better adaptation to diverse data patterns and enhancing the flexibility of the learned function. This newfound flexibility also brings challenges, particularly with regards to asymmetry and the need for an efficient learning algorithm. To address these challenges, this paper for the first time establishes an asymmetric kernel ridge regression framework and introduces an iterative kernel learning algorithm. This novel approach not only reduces the demand for extensive support data but also significantly improves generalization by training bandwidths on the available training data. Experimental results on real datasets underscore the remarkable performance of the proposed algorithm, showcasing its superior capability in handling large-scale datasets compared to Nyström approximation-based algorithms. Moreover, it demonstrates a significant improvement in regression accuracy over existing kernel-based learning methods and even surpasses residual neural networks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. The residue number system (RNS) has computational advantages in addition and multiplication compared with weighted number systems, such as the binary number system (BNS), since operations on residue digits are performed independently and these processes can be performed in parallel. Thus they are widely used in digital signal processing etc. Since residue to binary conversion is critical and difficult for the practicality of RNS, in this paper, a novel residue to binary (R/B) conversion algorithm for the restricted moduli set (2/sup n/ -1, 2/sup n/, 2n+1), based on exploring the periodicity of modulo (2/sup n/ /spl plusmn/ 1) operations is presented. A new 2n-bit adder based R/B converter is also proposed. The performance comparison results demonstrate that the new converter is faster and requires less area compared with the others reported in the previous literature.

In this paper, a novel method of fingerprint minutiae extraction on grey-scale images is proposed based on the Gabor phase field. The novelty of our approach is that the proposed algorithm is performed on the transform domain, i.e. the Gabor phase field of the fingerprint image. This is different from most existing minutiae extraction methods, in which the minutiae are usually extracted from the binarized and thinned fingerprint image. Experimental results on benchmark data sets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has promising performances.

In most cases, echocardiographers examine three-dimensional (3D) or four-dimensional (4D) echocardiographic images by studying several important cross sections which are defined as the optimal cross sections. It is a time-consuming and tedious task for echocardiographers to manually search the optimal cross sections by existing real-time 3D echocardiography (RT3DE) systems or off-line 3D softwares. To assist doctors' diagnosis, we design a registration-based method to automatically detect the optimal cross sections in three-dimensional echocardiographic (3DE) images. Firstly, a normal end-diastolic (ED) volumetric data is chosen, in which its optimal cross section is predetermined. Secondly, instead of the whole ED volume, only part of it is selected as the template. Finally, all the optimal cross sections of a 3DE image are detected by aligning the 3DE image with the template image. As a preliminary study, we performed this method on 28 normal apical datasets and the error rate is 15%. The results show good prospects for implementing automatic detection, which might offer better repeatability and save time. Furthermore, it can be a prior procedure for measurement and the computer-aided diagnosis.

Data Imputation by Pursuing Better Classification: A Supervised Kernel-Based Method

Data imputation, the process of filling in missing feature elements for incomplete data sets, plays a crucial role in data-driven learning. A fundamental belief is that data imputation is helpful for learning performance, and it follows that the pursuit of better classification can guide the data imputation process. While some works consider using label information to assist in this task, their simplistic utilization of labels lacks flexibility and may rely on strict assumptions. In this paper, we propose a new framework that effectively leverages supervision information to complete missing data in a manner conducive to classification. Specifically, this framework operates in two stages. Firstly, it leverages labels to supervise the optimization of similarity relationships among data, represented by the kernel matrix, with the goal of enhancing classification accuracy. To mitigate overfitting that may occur during this process, a perturbation variable is introduced to improve the robustness of the framework. Secondly, the learned kernel matrix serves as additional supervision information to guide data imputation through regression, utilizing the block coordinate descent method. The superiority of the proposed method is evaluated on four real-world data sets by comparing it with state-of-the-art imputation methods. Remarkably, our algorithm significantly outperforms other methods when the data is missing more than 60% of the features. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are identified as an integral part of future military forces. The coordinated route-planning problems of UAV team with various architectures are addressed in the framework of game theory. A two-stage route planner has been proposed, which combines various game models and the concept of evolutionary computation and is compatible with the cooperative/competitive nature envisioned for UAV team. Our route planner can handle different kinds of mission constraints in hierarchical style. Potential routes of each vehicle form their own sub-population, and evolve only in their own sub-population, while the cooperation and competition among UAVs are reflected by the definition of fitness function. Experimental results show the feasibility of generating the coordinated routes for UAV team using game theory methods.
