Developing empathy as a foundation of client-centred practice: Evaluation of a university curriculum initiative

Background. The foundation of client-centred practice is the therapist's capacity to view the world through the client's eyes and to develop an understanding of the lived experience of disability. Purpose. This paper describes the evaluation of an educational initiative promoting student empathy to the lived experience of disability. Methods. Pairs of first-year occupational therapy students visited adults with disabilities who shared their knowledge and experience of living with a disability. Students reflected on their visits in journals, which were later analyzed using pattern matching. Findings. Students appeared to appreciate the co-existence of health and disorder and demonstrated a holistic understanding of living with a disability. Little attention was focused on cultural and institutional environments. Students struggled to define the nature of their relationship with their tutors. Practice Implications. The evaluation confirmed our belief that this educational initiative could facilitate student empathy, consistent with critical features of client-centred practice.

Engineering education faces significant challenges as it seeks to meet the demands on the engineering profession in the twenty-first century. Engineering faculty will need to continue to learn new approaches to teaching and learning, which in turn will require effective professional development for both new and experienced instructors alike. This article explores approaches to effective professional development and provides a conceptual framework for responding to the challenge of becoming a professional engineering educator. The "cycle of professional practice" is introduced as a prelude for identifying what individual professors and their institutions can do to generate more powerful forms of engineering education. The article concludes with two case studies that illustrate the possibilities when faculty and academic leaders join together in addressing calls for change.

This paper describes the curriculum details of a recently funded NSF DUE project that will commence in the fall 2004 semester at the University of Oklahoma (OU) and will have a three year duration. This new active-learning and hands-on laboratory program is an interdisciplinary program, in which engineering, geoscience, and meteorology students are encouraged to actively participate. The program is intended to generate a unique, interdisciplinary research-oriented learning environment that will train future engineers and meteorologists in the full set of competencies needed to take raw radar data and transform it into meaningful interpretations of weather phenomena. The heart of the program is the development of a set undergraduate courses, offered by the School of Meteorology and the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering, that will provide hands-on laboratory experiences in the special knowledge and skills necessary for organizing real-time weather data, improving and preparing that data for display, and interpreting its meteorological and scientific significance. In addition, programs will be generated for K-12 students for the purpose of increasing their interest in science and engineering prior to entering college. Efforts will also be made to interest other university departments in building similar or related curricula in their programs.

An instructional model for Freshman class with laboratories was discussed. The instructional model introduces material of a given unit while laboratory sections are used to provide hands on detailed experience with applying knowledge in assigned readings and lecture. The lecture in the plays the role of wrap up for the unit students including making generalizations. It is suggested that 'lecture as wrap up' should require students to take more responsibility for their own learning, and in the end be more actively engaged in their learning than the 'lecture as introduction' path.

A pair of initial studies using an evolutionary approach to curricular reform that capitalize on the strength of both the top-down and bottom-up model, and was built on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) reform literature are performed. This approach develop a pairwise linkage among strategic courses in the engineering curricula to promote curricular integration. The results of trial produced higher course grades in both course grades in both courses, though the change was most significant for the mechanical engineering course. Full evaluation of the project cannot be obtained until the study is continued to include statics students who also participated when they were enrolled in the computer science course.

The Sooner City project at the University of Oklahoma (OU) seeks to reform the traditional civil engineering curriculum by including design projects at every level of the curriculum, not simply as a senior capstone project. The project can be implemented without changing the traditional course sequencing, which enhances faculty buy-in. It is part of a larger movement to reform engineering education by teaching students to: contribute in a dynamic, team-oriented professional environment, use advanced critical thinking skills, use computers proficiently, and communicate effectively to other engineers and to the public. Sooner City is in its 5th year at the OU School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (CEES). Five CEES classes per semester, freshman through senior, have incorporated design projects for a virtual city. Projects have ranged from concrete footings for virtual office buildings to floodplain analysis and bridge crossing design. This paper presents key results from two important tools used to evaluate the success of the Sooner City project: questionnaires completed every semester by students in Sooner City courses, and interviews of the professors of these courses. Responses indicate that the project is realizing stated objectives.

Obstacles to distance training and education in corporate organizations

While distance education is on a fast growth curve currently, there are many barriers that must be overcome. The results reported here are from persons working in corporate organizations (n=448). Takes the perspective that various organizations are at different stages or levels of capabilities with regard to distance education. The research questions reported are: do distance educators in the corporate sector perceive different barriers depending upon the maturity of their organization's capabilities in distance education;and as the organization's distance education competency as a whole matures, will the overall number or intensity of perceived barriers to distance education be reduced? The evidence from the responses to this survey indicates that there is a relationship between an organization's level of capability in distance education and the barriers to distance education reported by respondents for some but not all barriers. The analysis of this survey also supports the proposition that corporate trainers and educators perceive fewer, or less intense, barriers in organizations that are more capable delivering distance education. © 2002, MCB UP Limited

Laptops in the classroom: Do they make a difference?

In 1996 the College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma started to require all incoming students to have a laptop computer equipped with a wireless Internet card. Because of a pilot study and a voluntary phase-in over the first two years, two groups of students moved through the curriculum - those with and those without laptops. During 1998 and 1999, when these students entered their junior year, we offered two sections of a third-year water resources course: one for students who owned laptops and one "traditional" section for those who did not own laptops. We assessed student performance to evaluate if the laptops helped improve student learning. Although not a perfectly controlled experiment (i.e., the student groups were different), the two sections were uniform in terms of course content and assignments. Because of their inherently large standard deviations, class metrics (grades) are not conclusive, but they do indicate that the laptop students performed slightly better than the non-laptop students, even though their composite grade point average entering the course was lower. Evaluations do clearly show that, when the technology is used properly and when class time is not spent resolving technical problems, the laptop students had a more positive learning experience.

Obstacles faced at various stages of capability regarding distance education in institutions of higher education

Faculty compensation concerns and the lack of development and maintenance time are the greatest barriers to distance education across all organizational stages of capabilities. It may be that certain factors such as legal issues and evaluation, both of which show a steady increase from Stage 1 organizations to Stage 5 organizations, are the last to be tackled because other obstacles are more important in the earlier stages of maturity. The evidence from the responses to this survey indicates that there is a relationship between an organization’s level of capability in distance education and the barriers to distance education reported by respondents for some but not all barriers. In the early 1990's several national reports called for reform in engineering education and suggested that the current preparation of engineering students fell short of the skills and competencies that would be required of practising engineers. Many engineering colleges across the country sought to address these problems with curricular reforms that incorporated more hands-on design work into the engineering curricula. The task of assessing the effectiveness of these design-infused curricula presents a critical challenge for engineering educators. At Penn State, we developed a longitudinal assessment program to evaluate the qualitative changes in students' thinking as they progressed through the engineering curriculum. This paper presents a summary of the results of the first longitudinal component of this assessment.
