Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has been considered as an essential tool for many applications. Most of the applications of WSNs require the location of sensor nodes to be known. But, because of high power consumption and cost, it is not suitable to attach a GPS receiver with every node. For estimating the location of sensor nodes, localization algorithms make use of few location-aware nodes as reference nodes. But, sometimes, these reference nodes can turn faulty. They may estimate their locations wrongly due to software or hardware malfunctions. This affects the localization of the entire network. To overcome this problem, we have reported a fault tolerant localization algorithm called clustering based DV-Hop. This algorithm filters out faulty nodes using K-means clustering and majority voting methods. The performance of the algorithm is then compared with other localization algorithms. The reported algorithm shows better localization accuracies and more stable performance under faulty conditions.

This paper presents a description of recent computerized power generation plant automation and advanced man-machine interface systems. The automation software system is called COPOS (Computerized Optimum Plant Operation system), and the advanced man-machine interface software system is called PODIA (Plant Operation by Displayed Information and Automation). The authors describe, first of all, practical methods applied to the full automation of a fossil fired power plant by COPOS. For example, there is the fundamental philosophy of plant operation phases separation, sub-control systems separation, modes separation and WCD (Work control Drive). Also described is the COPOS software system, which features the problem oriented language (FILL IN BLANKS) called PLANT TABLES. Lastly, the authors describe the development of the displayed control panel, which makes effective use of many graphic color CRTs for advanced man-machine interface. The fundamental philosophy described in the paper is throughly useful and applicable to other process plants

The article deals with the exact approach convenient for flight schedule creating offering regular airline transportation service. The proposed exact approach is based on linear mathematical model. Out of the specified expected demand linkset the model is designed to select particular subset maximum aircraft fleet utilization. The model results represent optimal connection network at defined time periods. The arithmetical experiments have been carried out on model examples.

This paper proposes a direct current buck converter which provides two independent regulated direct current output voltages using only single control switch. The first converter operation is based upon the use of continuous conduction mode (CCM) to regulate output voltage by controlling the duty cycle of the switch, while the second converter operation is based upon the use of discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to regulate output voltage by controlling the duty cycle and changing the switching frequency. The system's operation is verified by results from computer simulation and experimentation from the prototype in this experiment, the switching frequency range is from 4 kHz to 90 kHz and the duty cycle range is from 20% to 42%. The overall efficiency of this converter is approximately 83% at full load.

In this paper, we present a pineapple skin model and a method to fit the model. Our main application of the model is for automatic maturity grading of pineapples in canned pineapple industry. The model consists of two subparts: Phyllotaxis and pineapple scale models. The Phyllotaxis model represents the spiral arrangement of pineapple-scales, which is a growing pattern of the fruit. It includes a string of scale-model cells. The scale model includes boundary, internal area and petal part of scale. Modified snake algorithm is used to construct the structure model while Active Shape Model (ASM) is applied to each scale. The model can accurately fit to pineapple skins in our experiment and classification features of the fruit can be extracted.

We combined a rotary machine with a reflecting optical sensor to built a machine that automatically calibrate ruler scales. The optical sensor is mounted on a linear motion rail along the ruler scales It identifies the marked lines on a metal ruler by detecting reflecting light intensity from the lines. Our system then finds distances between lines and counts the number of lines. The measured results were compared with the a reference length obtaining from an encoder of a precise stepping motor to measure the precision of the ruler scale. From the experiment results, the machine is shown to be capable of standard rulers grade 2 calibration. Lastly, the measurement uncertainty of the machine was analyzed.

This paper presents a new coding technique for fingerprint compression, which is based on contourlet transform and Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) vector quantization. One of the main difficulties in developing compression algorithms for fingerprints resides in the need for preserving the minutiae, which are subsequently used in identification. Wavelets have shown their ability in representing natural images that contain smooth areas separated with edges. However, wavelets cannot efficiently represent the ridge and furrow patterns, which are predominant in fingerprints. This issue is addressed by directional transforms, known as contourlets, which have the property of preserving edges. SOFM based vector quantizer quantizes the coefficients obtained by contourlet transform. The results obtained are tabulated and compared with those of the wavelet based ones. © 2007 JD.

In this paper, an approach for constructing a nonlinear estimator for adaptive compensation of the Coulomb friction in mechanical control systems is proposed where the Coulomb friction coefficient is unknown but its variation with time is bounded. A Two-Link Planar Robot Manipulator is considered as a case study. The design is based on Lyapunov technique and attempts to compensate the frictional force by estimating the Coulomb friction coefficient. It is shown that asymptotic stability of the error dynamics is guaranteed. The major contribution of this paper is an adaptive control law for friction compensation in the system in which the variation of the Coulomb coefficient with time has not any specified frequency. The simulation results confirm the advantages of the proposed approach against the previous methods for a simple single-mass system as well as for a Two-Link Planar Robot Manipulator.

Islanding phenomenon is one of the major concerns in the distributed generator (DG) systems. Islanding occurs when one or more DGs supplied local loads without connecting to the grid utility. This unintentional condition must be detected with the minimum time possible to prevent the hazardous effects to a person worked in the system or equipment connected to the network. The two main methods of anti-islanding are passive and active methods. The passive methods are excellent in the speed of detection and power quality. However, the passive have relatively large non-detection zone (NDZ). On the other hands, the active methods have less relatively small NDZ and still provide a good speed of detection. This paper proposes an anti-islanding technique for multiple grid-connected inverters in photovoltaic (PV) system based on an active method. By injecting harmonic currents with the same or different harmonic orders and monitoring the change at the point of common coupling (PCC), the islanding condition can be diagnosed. Due to its excellent algorithm looking at specific frequencies, the Goertzel algorithm is employed in this paper to identify frequency components. Simulation results using PSIM software confirm the effectiveness to the technique in accordance with the requirements of the interconnection standards, IEEE Std. 1547 and IEEE Std. 929–2000.

This paper presents the development of inspection system using ultrasonic for steel plate manufacturing. Generally, internal defects in the final product of steel plate are inspected manually by human operators, which is a time consuming process. In this research, the crystal of an ultrasonic probe at natural frequency suitable for steel plate examination was developed. In our design, high sensitivity (i.e. high signal peak amplitude) and good resolution were achieved using a (water coupling) probe structure, without ceramic wear plate, and a signal processing called the 1-bit technique. Backing material of the probe was carefully designed and experimented to obtain proper impedance matching with the probe's crystal by varying its material composition. Jig with a dual-probe support to speed up the inspection of a steel plate was implemented. Moreover, the 1-bit technique was applied to improve resolution of the inspection and to detect small flaws close to the far surface of the steel plate. The developed probe has more sensitivity than that of commercial probes in terms of frequency response. The 1-bit processing technique has been realized and simulated and it showed advantages over the conventional method for processing time and accuracy.
