In biogas process, the feed composition and concentration highly affect methane production therefore the kinetics of anaerobic reaction are quite complex and nonlinear. The research aims to control methane production rate in bioreactor by Total Volatile Acids and Alkalinity. The estimation of methane production rate derives from linear equation of Total Volatile Acids and Alkalinity. Reaction volume of 10.78 l and feed concentration of glucose syrup solution within the range of 40-70 wt% were used. The simulation results showed that methane production rate could be tracked and controlled by manipulating feed rate. The error of estimated methane production rate was approximately 2 percent.

Single Sensor Differential Thermal Analysis (SS-DTA) is a novel non-destructive testing technique for studying and detecting the phase transformations and structural changes in materials. It uses only one temperature sensor to measure the temperature in a particular point of interest in the material during actual and simulated thermal processing of the material. SS-DTA compares the temperature recorded in a tested specimen against a reference thermal profile which can be generated either by analytical formulae or piecewise linear approximation. The main advantage of piecewise linear approximation over the analytical formulae is that it does not need the knowledge of tested material and processing conditions to optimally estimate the parameters of reference thermal history. On the other hand, in order to apply the piecewise linear approximation technique we must specify the segment width which is normally fixed at a nominal value of 1.5 s. We have recently found that this nominal value might not be an optimal choice for the segment width as it does not guarantee to give the best detectability of phase transformation. Therefore, in this research work we proposed a technique to automatically select an appropriate value of the segment width. The performance of proposed method has been evaluated by investigating the phase transformations of welded stainless steel SUS 321 and SUS 304. It was found that the appropriate segment width could be ranging from 1.25-1.75 s and by using this selection technique, we could detect the differential temperature more accurately than when using the nominal value. © 2015 Trans Tech Publications.

The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are high-performance electromechanical motion devices essentially superseding traditional dc servomotors and fractional horsepower induction machines because of their high performance capability. The necessity for high performance in PMSM systems increases as the demand for precision controls. In order to optimize the speed-control performance of the PMSM system with different disturbances and uncertainties, a nonlinear speed-control algorithm for the PMSM servo systems using sliding-mode control is developed in this paper. A sliding-mode controller is designed based on conventional reaching law but the amount of chattering and reaching time are high. So a sliding mode controller is designed based on single power rate reaching law and double power rate reaching law methods. These methods improve the performance significantly. A comparison is made between PMSM servo system designed using Proportional Integral (PI) controller and sliding mode controllers designed based on different reaching law methods. © 2015 World Scientific and engineering Academy and Society. Analytic local linearization particle filter for Bayesian state estimation in nonlinear continuous process

State estimation is a prerequisite for monitoring, control and fault diagnosis of many processes. Dynamic model based state estimation techniques are used for monitoring the state variables. Particle filter have been widely used to estimate the state of nonlinear and non-Gaussian system. Particle filters require a proposal distribution but the choice of proposal distribution is the key design issue. In this paper, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) which is based on analytic local linearization is used to generate a proposal distribution for the particle filter. The efficacy of this local linearization particle filter (LLPF) is demonstrated via application to a simulated nonlinear continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and the results are compared with the sampling importance resampling (SIR) particle filter.

SS-DTA is an efficient tool for analysing phase transformations of metals during actual thermal processing ***-DTA involves the implementation of the differential temperature profile between the measured temperature and the reference temperature for detecting any phase changes of the investigated *** this paper,we applied and compared several data modelling techniques to obtain the reference curve for SS-DTA *** models include the polynomial model,the piecewise polynomial model,and the piecewise linear *** on a stabilised grade stainless steel SUS 321 were constructed to evaluate the performances of the proposed techniques in comparison with the conventional reference curve estimation approach.

Triboelectric energy harvesting is a promising energy harvesting technology which converts ambient mechanical energy into electrical energy using triboelectric and electrostatic coupling effects. In this paper, a contact-mode triboelectric energy harvesting device (TEHD) were qualitatively analyzed using a precision test rig, which accurately controlled the contact force and approach speed. From the governing equations of the contact-mode TEHD, we found factors which influence the performance of TEHD, and this was verified by experiments. The contact force affected to the amount of triboelectric charges, and short-circuit current. The approach speed of moving part did not affect the charges, but the short circuit current, output power, and optimal resistance.

In tapioca starch drying process, moisture content of tapioca starch is an important factor on the product quality. Normally, controlling starch moisture in drying is done by an operator resulting in a high variation of product moisture content. This research studied and developed a mathematical model for online estimation of starch moisture content in a flash dryer. Using a pilot-scale pneumatic conveying dryer with a drying tube of 9.7 m in length and an inner diameter of 0.07 m, a maximum of heater temperature of 350 °C, and an air velocity output of 15-20 m/s. In the dryer's control system, moist starch feed rate, temperature and humidity of air could be measured while moisture content of starch could not be measured. The flash dryer model was implemented and was validated with experimental data. The inlet tapioca starch moisture content was estimated using the outlet air temperature and outlet air humidity. The inlet starch moisture content of estimation was examined in the model. The outlet starch moisture content was estimated. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the inlet starch moisture content by simulation and experimental data was 1.99%.

This paper presents a monitoring system for tracking the performance of fine extractor in tapioca starch production process. The unit performance can be improved by the operators if they can monitor. State space model representing the starch extractor, was used for estimating starch and pulp inputs by using starch and pulp outputs. The extractor outputs were measured to calculate the extraction performance. The proposed method was tested with a pilot scale conical screen fine extractor and simulated by MATLAB/SIMULINK. The result showed that the monitoring method yielded the accuracy of 94.0% and 98.4% for starch extraction and pulp removal efficiency, respectively.

This paper proposes an algebraic approach for selecting the weighting matrices of linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for trajectory tracking application. One of the important problems in designing the state feedback controller via LQR is the choice of Q and R matrices. Normally, the weights of LQR controller are chosen based on trial and error approach to obtain the optimum state feedback controller gains, but it is often cumbersome and tedious to tune the controller gains via trial and error method. Hence to address the weight selection problem of LQR, a novel algebraic approach, which relates the time domain specifications of the system to be controlled to the weighting matrices of LQR, is proposed in this paper. The key idea of the proposed approach is the synthesis of time domain design specifications for the formulation of cost function of LQR, which directly translates the system requirement into cost function, so that an optimal performance can be obtained via a systematic approach. A nonlinear magnetic levitation system is used to validate the efficacy and robustness of the proposed methodology, and a detailed simulation results are presented. © 2014 IEEE.

In the centenary year of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, this paper reviews the current status of gravitational wave astronomy across a spectrum which stretches from attohertz to kilohertz frequencies. Sect. 1 of this paper reviews the historical development of gravitational wave astronomy from Einstein's first prediction to our current understanding the spectrum. It is shown that detection of signals in the audio frequency spectrum can be expected very soon, and that a north-south pair of next generation detectors would provide large scientific benefits. Sect. 2 reviews the theory of gravitational waves and the principles of detection using laser interferometry. The state of the art Advanced LIGO detectors are then described. These detectors have a high chance of detecting the first events in the near future. Sect. 3 reviews the KAGRA detector currently under development in Japan,which will be the first laser interferometer detector to use cryogenic test masses. Sect. 4 of this paper reviews gravitational wave detection in the nanohertz frequency band using the technique of pulsar timing. Sect. 5 reviews the status of gravitational wave detection in the attohertz frequency band, detectable in the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background, and discusses the prospects for detection of primordial waves from the big bang. The techniques described in sects. 1–5 have already placed significant limits on the strength of gravitational wave sources. Sects. 6 and 7 review ambitious plans for future space based gravitational wave detectors in the millihertz frequency band. Sect. 6 presents a roadmap for development of space based gravitational wave detectors by China while sect. 7 discusses a key enabling technology for space interferometry known as time delay interferometry.
