Due to fossil fuel depletion, power shortage has become a major problem in the world. This increases the importance of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) among the consumers which in turn led to the expansion of microgrid. Microgrid operates in grid-connected mode as well as in islanded mode. Microgrid is connected to main grid in grid connected mode. In islanded mode, there is no such connection and hence the microgrid operates independently. Microgrid may move to islanded mode intentionally or unintentionally. Power in the grid is not constant which in turn affected the loads connected to the grid. Due to the Sun light variation the voltage output from the grid may not be constant. In three phase microgrid, fault in one phase causes loss of voltage stability in other two phases. PID control has been used for microgrid voltage control but it does not work properly during fault conditions. So, an adaptive PI controller has been proposed to provide voltage regulation in microgrid which provides better performance under all the circumstances. The performance of the system employing adaptive PI controller is validated using the results obtained from the MATLAB Simulink.

The performance of engine management system of flexible fuel vehicles relies on the estimation of the ethanol content in the fuel blend. Many previously proposed estimation approaches involve additional redundant sensors which increase production costs. In this research work, we proposed a simple ethanol estimation technique which uses only the measurement of engine-speed at a fixed starting condition. The engine speed response was modelled as a first-order system. It was found that the steady-state characteristics of the model were able to capture the effect of changing fuel composition. By applying a nearest-mean classifier-based scheme, we could select the best feature from the model. Five different blends, including E10, E20, E50, E85, and E100, were used to formulate the model and experimentally validated the proposed technique.

CSTR plays a vital role in almost all the chemical reactions and is a highly nonlinear system exhibiting stable as well as unstable steady states. The variables which characterize the quality of the final product in CSTR are often difficult to measure in real-time and cannot be directly measured using the feedback configuration [1]. So, a virtual feedback control is implemented to control the state variables using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in the feedback path. Since it is hard to determine the optimal or near optimal PID parameters using classical tuning techniques like Ziegler Nichols method, a highly skilled optimization algorithm like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) are used. This work is based on the optimal tuning of virtual feedback PID control for a CSTR system using soft computing algorithm for minimum Integral Square Error (ISE) condition.

The aim of this research is to reduce data for a P300 spelling system by using downsampling algorithm to reduce the sampling rate of the system. The comparison between this method and standard algorithms such as Discrete Wavelet Transforms (DWT) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is also discussed in this paper. While downsampling algorithm is used to reduce sampled data, Ensemble of Support Vector Machine (ESVM) is used to model and to classify the reduced data in order to predict characters. The experimental results show that the accuracy of downsampling algorithm, no-data-reduction algorithm, DWT and PCA are 97.5%, 93.5%, 96.0%, and 79.5% respectively.

A state observer is a system that models a real system in order to provide an estimate of the internal state of the system. The design techniques and comparison of four different types of state observers are presented in this paper. The considered observers include Luenberger observer, Kalman observer, unknown input observer and sliding mode observer. The application of these observers to a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) DC servo motor model and the performance of observers is assessed. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of these schemes, the simulated results on the position of DC servo motor in terms of residuals including white noise disturbance and additive faults are compared.

The objective of this paper is to describe a new design of a trans-oral surgical robot. The trans-oral robotic surgery system consists of a master device and a slave device. Specifically, the concept of stackable mechanism is applied to design both master and slave devices. Using the stackable architecture, counter-balancing can be achieved over the whole workspace and compact design can be made by locating all motors at the base of the robot. Effective tracking is still a big challenge due to lack of robust descriptors which captures discriminative features in non-controlled environment. We propose a novel descriptor based on Gabor wavelet and Partial Least Squares (PLS) discriminant analysis. Multi scale and multi orientation Gabor wavelets can extract selective local frequencies effectively in spatial and frequency domain. Due to the large dimension of feature vectors, dimensionality reduction is done using class aware PLS analysis. Unlike unsupervised Principal Component Analysis (PCA), PLS based subspace model learns target effectively by explicitly knowing the class labels of target and background region feature vectors. Tracking is done using particle filter and similarity between target and candidates is measured using low dimensional subspace model. To combat the target changes during tracking, novel static and dynamic target as well as background update strategy is used. Experimental results of various dataset demonstrate that the proposed tracker improves robustness and accuracy against representative trackers.
