Smart Grid (SG) is a modernized and a future-oriented electric grid that deals with the whole energy chain from generation to consumer. Among SG applications, demand response (DR) is an important control mechanism to manage the electricity consumption of the customer in response to the supply condition. In buildings, DR is managed through communication networks installed in the buildings. These communication protocols must include DR-supporting applications. BACnet (Building automation and control network) [3] is an international standard communication protocol for building automation and controlsystems (BACS). BACnet uses ZigBee as a wireless communication protocol for BACS. Both BACnet and ZigBee have their own DR applications. In this study, we developed a BACnet-ZigBee gateway that maps the DR application of BACnet to that of ZigBee. The function of the BACnet-ZigBee gateway was verified through experiment.

Two dimensional Fourier transform is a powerful tool for image processing, especially in the field of image restoration and filtration. But also it is useful for detection of periodicities at any angle with respect to the image edge. This paper describes the use of two dimensional Fourier transform in the MATLAB environment to compute the length of a wave and the angle between the line that connects points with the same phase and the edge of an image. Several sets of images were processed in order to demonstrate the properties of two dimensional Fourier transform. The results along with description of the main algorithm are presented.

Applications of shape memory alloys (SMAs) as damage sensors have been widely studied in structural health monitoring. Monitoring a significant change in electrical resistance of SMAs can indicate the phase transformation of SMAs. The possibility of using the electrical resistance of SMAs as an indicator of damage in the materials has been investigated. We continuously monitored the behaviour of electrical resistance, as well as the strain, under the tensile test which is used as the simulated crack propagation. Wavelet transform were used to extract the trend of the noisy electrical resistance raw data, measured by the four-point-probe technique. We determined that the electrical resistance variation of the SMA wire is correlated with the strain and can possibly be used in damage detection stage.

A new method to identify the spatial dependent parameters describing the heat transport, i.e. diffusion and convection, in fusion reactors is presented. These parameters determine the performance of fusion reactors. The method is based on local transfer functions, which are defined between two measurement locations. Estimation of the local transfer functions results in a model of the spatial dependent diffusion and convection. The parameters of the local transfer functions are estimated using Maximum Likelihood Estimation in the frequency domain. This is necessary, because both measurements (input and output of the transfer function) contain noise. Moreover, confidence bounds and validation tests can be used in this framework. Finally, experimental results are presented, which show that the diffusion and convection can be estimated. In this case, the uncertainty bounds are too large on the convection to conclude its presence.
