This paper presents an application of LPV input-output model identification and LPV controller synthesis to a turbocharged spark ignited combustion engine with experimental results. The complexity of identified LPV input-output models is reduced using parameter-set mapping in combination with nonlinear optimization. A model-structure suitable for a direct transformation to a polytopic LPV state-space model is used to allow polytopic LPV controller synthesis with a parameter varying Lyapunov matrix. The resulting feedback controller is implemented in the electronic control unit of a test car. Its performance is compared to an existing heuristically tuned nonlinear controller in closed-loop experiments on a test road in first gear.

The implementation of automated regulatory control has been around since the middle of the last century through analog means. It has allowed engineers to operate the plant more consistently by focusing on overall operations and settings instead of individual monitoring of local instruments (inside and outside of a control room). A similar approach is proposed for cyber security, where current border-protection designs have been inherited from information technology developments that lack consideration of the high-reliability, high consequence nature of industrial control systems. Instead of an independent development, however, an integrated approach is taken to develop a holistic understanding of performance. This performance takes shape inside a multi-agent design, which provides a notional context to model highly decentralized and complex industrial process control systems, the nervous system of critical infrastructure. The resulting strategy will provide a framework for researching solutions to security and unrecognized interdependency concerns with industrial control systems.

This paper describes development of the module, which analyzes medical images and its use is also possible in sectors other than medicine. A software module can base on events captured on the ECG graph store images, which the event concerned. Since the ECG chart is only available on video, you will need to analyze this video and chart to properly recognize it. This module plugged together with two other simultaneously developed modules in the FOTOM 2009 will make a brand new version of this application FOTOM NG .

This paper describes the processing of photographs in the newly created module for 2D modeling, which will be integrated into the system FOTOM NG . This is a usable application in medicine to analyze images of probes and non-invasive examination developed at the department of computer science of the technical university of Ostrava. The module will be his purpose and functionality to build on a previous version of module Fotom2 of system FOTOM, but will be expanded to meet the requirements of a modern system. The module will be implemented on the NetBeans Platform. In the paper we describe the 2D modeling, analyzing the existing software requirements specifications for the new module, selecting software tools, and the subsequent design and implementation.

This paper presents preliminary results of a robust linear parameter varying (LPV)- based sliding mode voltage controller for a parallel-plate electro-static microactuator. The controller design aims to extend the travelling range of the microactuator plates beyond the, so-called, 'pull-in' condition, thus taking advantage of an increased range of operation. The designed controller is successful in extending the microactuator's plates operation beyond the pull-in condition with moderate controller complexity, while guaranteeing robustness against matched uncertainty. Results illustrate, that the controller also provides a degree of robustness to unmatched uncertainty (i.e. spring stiffness variation). Appropriate simulation studies, on the nonlinear normalized microactuator model, are employed to assess the efficacy of the proposed controller.

This paper presents an algorithm to segment the blood vessels in retinal images. The contribution of this work is that we exhibit how a line detection can be applied in a multi-scale framework to fulfill the sophisticated task of vessel segmentation. The key idea of our algorithm is to systematically combine the outputs of Gaussian based line detection that is applied sequentially to the input image at several scales from coarse to fine levels. This brings down to the strategy that the evidences of larger size vessels are used to steer the process of addition of smaller vessels. Our proposed method is evaluated on the public DRIVE database and shows results with false positive rate.

This paper presents a method for identifying the optimum structure of Wiener model with piecewise linearisation. The number of piecewise linear functions for estimating the static nonlinear and the maximum lag of the linear dynamic part of the Wiener model are selected by cross-validation based approach. The maximum lag and the number of partitions are selected in two subsequence steps. Three popular model selection criteria, i.e. FPE, PRESS, and CP, are considered and compared in the selection process. With the ultimate aim of compensation for nonlinearities in sensors, we have illustrated the feasibility of using the proposed method to compensate hard nonlinearities, such as discontinuous nonlinear and saturation. The results from this work can be used as a guideline of model selection for Wiener model identification and nonlinear compensations of sensor. © 2011 IEEE.

Anti-lock Braking systems (ABS) is a safe system and equipped in almost modern cars. In ABS, wheel speed sensors (WSS) are important components, they provide essential wheel speed information not only for anti-lock brake systems, but also for traction control and stability control systems. The wheel speed sensors on most vehicles are magnetic and generate an alternating current (AC) signal that increases in frequency and amplitude with wheel speed. When the teeth on the tone ring rotate past the sensor tip, it changes the magnetic field and induces a current in the sensor windings. The result is a classic sine wave current pattern that changes with wheel speed. The strength of the signal can be affected by not only wheel speed but also the air gap between the sensor and tone ring, resistance inside the sensor, resistance in the external wiring and connector. A precise gap is necessary to produce a strong, reliable signal. But if the gap is too close, metal-to-metal contact between the sensor and tone ring would damage both. Conversely, an air gap that's too wide may produce a weak or erratic signal or no signal at all. The paper presents the change of alternating current signal when changing sensor air gap, wheel speed and drive angle. By using PULSE LabShop and SignalAnalyser software, sensor KMI15, we observe the waveform on the scope. A scope will show the voltage and frequency of the signal, as well as any missing or distorted humps in the sine wave pattern. From this, we can determine the ABS brake efficiency. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new concept named Flexible, Reliable and Intelligent ENergy Delivery System (FRIENDS) as a future power distribution system. In FRIENDS, new facilities called Quality control Centers (QCCs), which consists of Voltage control type Inverters, Distributed Generators (DGs), Energy Storage systems (ESSs), etc., are installed between distribution substation and customers. By controlling and operating those inverters and DGs in QCCs adequately, balancing the supply and demand can be realized. Particularly, when the power supply from the transmission network is interrupted, isolated local network which consists of some QCCs are composed in order to realize uninterruptible power supply. In the isolated network, the DGs and ESSs in QCCs are employed as backup generators. This paper proposes a distributed and autonomous method for balancing the power system supply and demand during interruption period. This paper also investigates the effectiveness of the proposed method through computational simulations using MATLAB and LabVIEW. The results obtained using our hardware with MATLAB and LabVIEW were also compared with that of the one obtained using PSCAD. © 2011 IEEE.

In this work, a discrete time sliding mode controller with multirate output feedback is designed to suppress the first two vibrating modes of a piezo actuated structure. The vibrating modes are measured by two homogeneous piezoelectric sensors. The states estimated using information filter are fused, using which the control signal is generated. The performance of the controller is evaluated through simulation and it is found that the closed loop performance with data fusion gives improved results.
