As a contemporary bidirectional intelligent instrumentation telemetry system, wireless technology is pivotal in serving crucial communication requirements of smart grid. As a result, research into the influence of weather variations on communication system availability is critical. The goal of this study is to investigate and examine the influence of weather variations on communication system’s run-time availability, as well as to recommend better alternatives for the particular region. The proposed methodology was validated on a real-time dataset from an Indian smart grid installation and found to be simple, adaptable, and viable for field engineers and design engineers planning for modifications and future expansions, respectively. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This study investigates the relationship between the diameter of a D-shaped plastic optical fiber (POF) sensor and its optical response as a function of varying salt concentrations. A simple and efficient dry etching polishing technique was employed to create D-shaped POF sensors with a range of diameters. All the fabricated sensors were carefully developed to maintain a consistent length of 20 cm with a sensing region of 1cm. To evaluate the optical intensity response, each sensor, with its respective diameter, was examined with the salt concentration ranging from (0 to 5%) examination utilizing a spectrometer. The sensor response was characterized by quantifying the variations observed in the intensity of the optical signal propagating through the sensing region. The sensors having a diameter of 500 μm, 700 μm, and 900 μm had a sensitivity of 149 A.U/%salt, 66 A.U/%salt, and 11.2 A.U/%salt respectively. The sensitivity of the 500 μm diameter sensor increased 13 times approximately as compared to the sensor having diameter of 900 μm. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The slow response rate of fuel cells (FC) proves to hinder the progression of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs). In this paper, a unified robust nonlinear control technique is designed for FCHEV-integrated supercapacitors (SC). Therefore, the FCHEV's requirements can be systematically balanced between FC with high energy density and SC with high power density. Accordingly, the hybrid energy storage system enables better driving range as well as a comparatively lower weight than battery-based electric vehicles. The proposed control technique utilizes feedback linearization in combination with sliding mode control to mitigate the impact of system uncertainties with minimal tracking error. The efficacy is demonstrated based on the presented DC-bus voltage regulation, SC current, and FC current.

Nowadays, a huge amount of digital data is being exchanged through many network channels. As a result, there is an imminent demand to increase the storage size of data servers used in industrial and technological applications. Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) are the main recording devices used in internet and communication applications, and they are deployed in large quantities in data centers to accommodate large-scale digital data. As the storage size of HDDs becomes larger and denser, the need to further improve the head positioning control system in HDDs is required. As such, the precise accuracy of tracking systems in modern HDDs is met with challenges that have to be tackled. This paper proposes an evolutionary-based optimization technique to tune the PID controller of the magnetic head positioning control system in modern HDDs while minimizing the position error signal. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the optimally tuned PID compared to conventional techniques.

Smart mobility and logistics (SML) is an emerging paradigm that aims to interconnect transportation networks, industries, and commercial services to provide better services to end-users. SML solutions are rapidly growing in popularity not only in industrial sectors but also at individual levels by means of ride-sharing solutions, micro-mobility solutions, electric vehicles, and intelligent autonomous systems like self-driving cars, trucks, drones, and legged robots, among others. Usually, these solutions utilize communications technologies such as 5G internet services, cloud services, the internet of things, intelligent solutions, sophisticated routing and scheduling algorithms, and security features. The SML sector is still in its early stages, and solutions need to be designed for challenges that are unique due to the diverse needs. Also, many places in the world are facing challenges such as disruption in the global and local supply chains, traffic congestion, the death toll due to poor traffic networks, low-performance routes, and degraded quality of service. This paper aims to help researchers address these challenges and find innovative solutions that can help achieve SML goals.

Vertical transportation systems, such as elevators and escalators, are essential components of modern infrastructure, necessitating robust safety mechanisms to ensure user well-being. This paper proposes an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system to enhance the safety, monitoring, and efficiency of vertical transport. The system addresses critical issues, such as sudden elevator cable failures leading to entrapment or uncontrolled descent, power losses during operation, and fire hazards caused by material friction. By leveraging IoT technology, the system enables real-time monitoring and immediate notification of potential problems via messaging. The implementation requires components such as ultrasonic sensors, smoke sensors, vibration sensors, microcontrollers, DC motors, batteries, relays, and the UBIDOT application. The resulting system is low-cost, user-friendly, and economically viable, making it accessible to individuals with minimal technical expertise. Furthermore, it is designed for ease of construction and troubleshooting, offering a practical and scalable solution to improve elevator safety and reliability.

At the end of 2019, the disease later known as COVID-19 emerged, causing the recent pandemic. The objective of this study was to propose an adaptive mathematical model with the capacity to forecast the health needs of the conntry in the face of the pandemic situation, based on the health needs and the demands for supplies, medicines and other resources identified in the database of the Ministry of Health from the Republic of Panama. In addition, information from the GitHub Repository of the John Hopkins University Center for systems Science and engineering was considered. A quantitative methodology was used from existing data, based on a mixed approach that incorporated dynamic simulation, machine learning and Six-Sigma design. A monitoring model has been developed focused on reducing health risk due to shortages of medicines and medical supplies in the event of a pandemic or similar situation. This research has laid the foundations for the development of epidemiological models in Panama to facilitate data processing, providing a complementary tool for decision-making based on short-Term predictions, which is expected to achieve a better distribution of health resources in the country in cases of national health emergency. © 2023 IEEE.

Velocity measurement based on visual data received from a camera has garnered tremendous attention in the fields of computer vision and image processing. The camera resolution, view angle, and depth stability affect the performance of velocity measurement frameworks. Various descriptors have been developed by researchers; however, they are severely prone to photometric and geometric variations within the image. In this research, we propose an enhanced SIFT local descriptor to extract features from the local structures within the image. Based on feature matching between consecutive frames of the video, we estimated the velocity of a UAV flying at a uniform height above the ground. The proposed descriptor resulted in a more accurate velocity estimate than many state-of-the-art descriptors available in the literature.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming important to businesses since many companies have realized the benefits of applying Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) into their operations. Nevertheless, ML/DL technologies' industrial development and deployment examples are still rare and generally confined within a small cluster of large international companies who are struggling to apply ML more broadly and deploy their use cases at a large scale. Meanwhile, current AI market has started offering various solutions and services. Thus, organizations must understand how to acquire AI technology based on their business strategy and available resources. This paper discusses the industrial experience of developing and deploying ML/DL use cases to support organizations in their transformation towards AI. We identify how various factors, like cost, schedule, and intellectual property, can be affected by the choice of approach towards ML/DL project development and deployment within large international engineering corporations. As a research result, we present a framework that covers the trade-offs between those various factors and can support engineering companies to choose the best approach based on their long-term business strategies and, therefore, would help to accomplish their ML/DL project deployment successfully. © 2022 ACM.

Hand hygiene (HH) is one of the most important activities of protection against pandemic disease in the current difficult situation around the world. To achieve this, World Health Organization (WHO) recommends frequent hand washing with soap and hand sanitization using hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers are generally applied by squirting the sanitizer liquid by hand and it may cause to spread of viral carriers to many peoples. To reduce the spread of pandemic disease and to reduce contact with potential carriers of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites in public places, in this paper, the authors have designed an automated contactless hand sanitizer dispenser system (ACHSDS) with an infrared (IR) sensor and based on a PIC18F4550 microcontroller for use in public places, workplaces, kindergartens, schools, universities and etc. The ACHSDS can be used without touching or holding, and may decrease the risk of contamination. © 2022 ACM.
