Random close packing in protein cores

Shortly after the determination of the first protein x-ray crystal structures, researchers analyzed their cores and reported packing fractions ϕ≈0.75, a value that is similar to close packing of equal-sized spheres. A limitation of these analyses was the use of extended atom models, rather than the more physically accurate explicit hydrogen model. The validity of the explicit hydrogen model was proved in our previous studies by its ability to predict the side chain dihedral angle distributions observed in proteins. In contrast, the extended atom model is not able to recapitulate the side chain dihedral angle distributions, and gives rise to large atomic clashes at side chain dihedral angle combinations that are highly probable in protein crystal structures. Here, we employ the explicit hydrogen model to calculate the packing fraction of the cores of over 200 high-resolution protein structures. We find that these protein cores have ϕ≈0.56, which is similar to results obtained from simulations of random packings of individual amino acids. This result provides a deeper understanding of the physical basis of protein structure that will enable predictions of the effects of amino acid mutations to protein cores and interfaces of known structure.

In this study, we examine the contribution of student-faculty interactions to the future engagement of students in their academic endeavors. These relationships were evaluated in a one-year longitudinal study of STEM (including engineering and computer science) students at five different institutions. These five institutions include three types of Carnegie 2010 classifications (Bac-Diverse, Master's L, and RU-VH), four geographical locations including the northwest, northeast, midwest, and southeast, and both public and private institutions with total undergraduate enrollments varying from 1,900 to 29,000 students. Both behavioral (effort, participation) and emotional (positive, negative) aspects of engagement are studied. Results show that significant relationships emerged for three of the five schools between faculty support and engagement. Formal faculty support (that provided in the context of a particular course) predicted effort (a form of behavioral engagement) at the HBCU in this study and also positive emotional engagement for both the HBCU and Teaching institution. Informal faculty support (that provided outside the context of a particular course) predicted participation (another form of behavioral engagement) and positive emotional engagement at the Research institution in the study. These results suggest that institutional culture influences how what faculty do predicts future engagement outcomes for students. At the Research institution, it appears that what happens between faculty and students outside of class influences students while at smaller or teaching-oriented institutions, what faculty do inside a class matters more. These results can provide important insight to faculty as to how to guide their interactions with students at different institutions to make the most difference in students' academic lives. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

This study interviewed 33 students from four different institutions in a variety of engineering and computer science majors in order to understand how and why students study the way they do. The institutions involved in this research include two types of Carnegie 2010 Classifications (Master's L and RU-VH), geographical locations in the northwest, northeast, and midwest, both public and private institutions, and enrollments varying from 3,500 to 29,000 students (total undergraduates among all majors). Although this interview pool does not provide a large sample size, and thus results must be interpreted qualitatively and with caution, we found that a majority of students begin their studying alone and seek help only later when they run into trouble with their coursework. Despite the fact that this Start alone, End together model for studying was the predominant approach among interviewees, the reasons for choosing this mode of studying vary. For example, students at the small Women's college in this study reported easy accessibility to faculty as a reason to refrain from studying in groups, while students at the large research university reported a need to focus properly, learn fully, and make the most efficient use of limited time as the prevalent reason for beginning their study alone. Furthermore, when asked how they prefer to study, many students shift from a Start alone, End together model to a Start alone, End alone model, suggesting that students may have unrealistic expectations of being able to complete assignments and study on their own. Still other students, while making the best of Start alone, End together, expressed that they would much rather work in a group from start to finish. The results of our student interviews suggest the need for a larger study that investigates how prevalent the Start alone, End together model of studying is among a large, representative sample of engineering and computer science students and if it is an arrangement that stud

Background:Genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility is widely used,but for many genes,evidence of an association with breast cancer is weak,underlying risk estimates are imprecise,and reliable subtype-specific risk estimates are ***:We used a panel of 34 putative susceptibility genes to perform sequencing on samples from 60,466 women with breast cancer and 53,461 *** separate analyses for protein-truncating variants and rare missense variants in these genes,we estimated odds ratios for breast cancer overall and tumor *** evaluated missense-variant associations according to domain and classification of pathogenicity.

integrated Design Innovation: A Mindset for Designers of Tomorrow

作者： Amy O'Keefe Sarah Rottenberg Co‐leads Northwestern University's master of science in engineering design innovation (EDI) program and teaches at the Human‐Centered Service Design Studio. Her professional background includes more than a decade leading multidisciplinary service product design and development at a Chicago‐based tech startup acquired by Thomson Reuters. She consults on service experience and integrated multichannel initiatives for Fortune 50 retail and global Am Law 100 clients. O'Keefe received her MS in product design and development management from Northwestern. She is a founding member of the Integrated Design Innovation consortium (IDI) and is working with colleagues in the US and abroad to establish evolve and expand the category of integrated design innovation programs in engineering education. An adjunct assistant professor in the School of Design and the associate director of the Integrated Product Design Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She began her career as a design strategist at Doblin Inc. and was formerly a directing associate at Jump Associates where she worked with clients as diverse as Target Chrysler Fiat and GE to identify new products and new business opportunities. Rottenberg is a cofounder of Lia Diagnostics a company that has developed a flushable pregnancy test. She has a master of arts in social sciences from the University of Chicago where she specialized in anthropology and a bachelor of science in foreign service from Georgetown University.

integrated design innovation master's programs combine the principles of human‐centered design and design thinking with studies in engineering, technology, and business.
