On p. 2603, Tom Picraux and co‐workers report on the use of plasma excitation to strongly enhance the nucleation of Si nanowires by the vapor–liquid–solid growth method. This control allows the preferential formation of very small diameter [110] oriented nanowires, as well as significant enhancements in low temperature nanowire growth.

The transformation of the steroidal Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs), 17-®- estradiol (E2) and 17-ethinyl estradiol (EE2) by direct UV photolysis and UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation was studied from the perspective of the removal of estrogenic activity associated with the compounds. First, experiments were performed to link the oxidation of E2 and EE2 with subsequent reduction in estrogenic activity. No statistically significant difference between these rates was observed, implying that the oxidation products of E2 and EE2 are not as estrogenic (as measured by the YES) as the parent compounds. Utilizing the YES, 90% removal of estrogenic activity of E2 and EE2 at environmentally relevant concentrations (~3g L-1) was achieved using a combination of 5 mg L-1 H2O2 and a UV dose of less than 400 mJ cm-2. Thus, these compounds, when considered at environmentally relevant levels, j are significantly degraded at much lower UV doses than previously thought. A steady state OH radical model was used to predict oxidation of EE2 in the laboratory water. © 2006 American Water Works Association WQTC Conference All Rights Reserved.

The Wireless integrated MicroSystems (WIMS) engineering Research Center (ERC) has developed a broad comprehensive MEMS and microsystem curriculum suitable for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and industry professionals. Five core courses were in the initial curriculum design. The design had flexibility that invited development of other core courses, as well as related technical electives and breadth electives. The core courses provide instruction in MEMS, Microsystems, major design and laboratory measurements, and societal impact. The course enrollments have been strong. A master of engineering in integrated microsystems degree program was developed so that industry professionals would have a focused set of coursework, while providing flexibility that would permit custom tailoring of the total course package to serve specific needs. Distance education dissemination of the courses as whole courses, or as discrete portions of course materials, was intended to be available;that goal has been realized. The core courses originate at the University of Michigan (UM), and have been distributed to Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan Technological University (MTU), Howard University (HU), University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez (UPRM), and Western Michigan University (WMU). Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has used materials from the UM core courses in its offerings. Other institutions that have used the course web-streaming video and course materials are University of Lille, Darmstadt University, and Middle East Technical University. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

In this paper, we propose a novel on-demand multicasting algorithm, "durable distance vector multicasting (DDVM)," for mobile ad hoc network (MANET). DDVM has a smaller routing-control overhead than link state routing (LSR) and provides a high delivery ratio for MANET with high mobility by adapting to dynamic topological changes. Furthermore, DDVM is energy-efficient in terms of "packet transmission efficiency." This is achieved by adding "combined path-durability" statistic into the routing-control information of distance vector routing (DVR). The routing-path duration statistic is computed in a fully distributed manner at each node in the network based on only local information from neighbour nodes. We show by simulation studies the effectiveness of DDVM compared with on-demand multicast routing protocol (ODMRP)

The dynamics of surface fluctuations in thin supported polystyrene films have been investigated using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) in reflection geometry. The results from the films thicker than four times of the radius of gyration (Rg) of polystyrene show the behavior of the capillary waves expected in viscous liquid. However, thinner films show a deviation indicating the need to account for viscoelasticity. Theoretical considerations with viscoelastic liquid model has been performed by introducing frequency dependent viscosity and compared with Fredrickson’s brush model (Macromolecules, 25, 2882 (1992)). The theory has been extended to the surface and interfacial modes in a bilayer film system. The results will be discussed in terms of surface tension, viscosity, and shear modulus.

The service-learning educational method actively engages students in community service as an integral component of coursework, fostering both civic responsibility and leadership. Research has shown that the use of service-learning pedagogy has significant positive effects on students' academic performance (GPA, writing skills, critical thinking skills) and development of civic values (commitment to continued civic participation).1Service-learning courses are emerging in engineering colleges as a mechanism to provide engineering students with meaningful community-based learning experiences through which they develop the values and skills of citizenship and leadership, while maturing their own communications skills and strengthening their commitment to the engineering profession.

A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

This paper presents the numerical investigation on the formability of the sheet hydroforming by a finite element method. The finite element method code for sheet hydroforming simulation was developed based on the static‐explicit finite‐element method code STAMP3D. Experiments and Simulations of ellipse deep drawings were performed. The simulated thickness strain distribution which has two local thinnings at the punch shoulder and at the upper part of the side wall well agreed with the experimental one, thus demonstrating the validity of the developed code. Moreover, the effects of the friction increasing effect which is one of the main features in the sheet hydroforming on the formability were examined by comparing the results between the simulations with the friction coefficient μ=0 and those with μ=0.15. When μ=0 was employed, the local thinning at the upper part of the side wall disappeared. This showed that the occurring the two local thinnings in the sheet hydroforming was originated in the friction increasing effect.

Several materials exhibiting negative coefficients of thermal expansion have recently been identified. Such materials incorporated as filler in a polymer matrix should result in a composite with reduced, if not zero, expansion when exposed to elevated temperatures. One such filler material, ZrW 2O8, has a highly negative coefficient of thermal expansion and its cubic structure leads to isotropic thermal behavior. Consequently, Zr2WO8 was investigated as functional filler for polymer matrices, with the goal being improved dimensional stability of the filled system. The choice of polymeric matrix material is also crucial when seeking dimensional stability, and fabrication of a useful end product. In this regard, several aerospace grade epoxies along with a novel cyanate ester resin were investigated. The dynamic mechanical properties along with thermal behavior of the filled systems were compared. A cyanate ester/ZrW2O 8 system exhibited the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and consequently was investigated in most detail. Cylindrical samples of the cyanate ester/ZrW2O8 system were molded and cured per schedule. The ZrW2O8 particles were allowed to settle at their natural rate. Thus, the final samples contained various weight percentages and sizes of ZrW2O8. The sectioned samples allowed investigation of filler percent and how it impacts overall CTE. Decreases in CTE of ∼80% are reported for samples containing ∼82 wt% ZrW 2O8. The lowest value observed for composite CTE was 2.8 ppm/K at 32 °C for a sample having 83% zirconium tungstate, which had been subject to one temperature cycle.
