Mean-risk analysis of radio frequency identification technology in supply chain with inventory misplacement: Risk-sharing and coordination

This paper investigates the application of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to eliminate the misplacement problems in the supply chain, which consists of a risk-neutral manufacturer and a risk-averse retailer. By considering both fixed cost and tag cost of RFID implementation, we study the agents' incentives to adopt RFID in both uncoordinated and coordinated cases. We focus on analyzing the impact of risk attitudes on the agents’ incentives and on the supply chain coordination. The central semi-deviation is adopted to measure the retailer's risk attitude. In the uncoordinated case, we find that, in order to induce the retailer to adopt RFID, the manufacturer must assume more fixed cost if the retailer is more risk-averse. In the coordinated case, we first show that the standard revenue sharing contract does not always coordinate the channel. If the channel is coordinated, we observe that the agents’ incentives will be perfectly aligned and independent of the risk attitudes, if the revenue sharing ratio equals the fixed cost sharing ratio. Then we propose a risk-sharing contract that offers the risk protection to the retailer, to achieve the channel coordination. An interesting finding is that the manufacturer's incentive will not decrease with the tag cost, if she takes much risk from the retailer. The corresponding impacts of RFID adoption on the two contracts are also analyzed in this paper. Finally, a case study in a tobacco industry is presented to show the real RFID cost in practice.

This paper reveals the quantized phase step phenomenon between every two cyclical signals and its characteristics. With these characteristics, ultra-high resolution phase difference measurement limited by the quantized phase step and its corresponding measurements can be achieved. The princple that the quantized phase steps between two radio frequencies are usually less than picosecond, femtosecond and even sub-femtoseconds, namely, the princple that the corresponding equivalent phase comparison frequency between two radio frequencies can enter into the microwave or light bands is also revealed, which provides a foundation for the precise link based on phase group processing between frequencies in different bands. In this paper, an ultra-high resolution phase difference measurement method based on the quantized phase step phenomenon and the phase coincidence detection is proposed. By introducing an intermediate frequency, this method utilizes the quantized phase step phenomenon between the measured frequency and the intermediate frequency to measure the phase difference. Highspeed A/D sampling and data processing are used to improve the phase coincidence detection accuracy.

This paper is to present a defect detecting and locating method of tubular cylindrical conductor based on alternating current impedance measurement theory. A defect estimation can be made through the impedance measurement of some distance on the inner and the outer surfaces of the tubular cylindrical conductor. A defect in the thickness direction can be located by the skin effect influence on impedance and the frequency change in exciting current. The results show that: this method can effectively identify and locate a defect, and therefore should be promoted in the defect detecting of metal materials in other shapes. © 2013 Universitas Ahmad Dahlan.

The impact of stock-dependent demand on supply chain dynamics

This paper presents an investigation on the dynamics of a supply chain system under stock-dependent demand. Considering the feature of piecewise linearity, a switched linear model composed of three subsystems is developed. Based on the switched model, some analytical stability results are derived. Simulation experiments are designed to verify the stability results and observe nonlinear dynamics. We show that stock-dependent demand not only leads to different stability results but also makes nonlinear dynamics more complicated. We also reveal that the nonlinear dynamics of the switched model, such as chaotic and periodic fluctuations of inventory and order, are essentially caused by switching frequently among subsystems due to uncertainties of inventory status. The results obtained in this paper help us understand the dynamic complexities of supply chain system and provide guidelines for selecting decision parameters to improve overall performance.

Infrared and color visible images fusion based on color transfer and information entropy

Combining with the lαβ color space and the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT), a novel fusion algorithm for infrared and color visible images based on the color transfer and information entropy was proposed. Firstly, the R, G, B bands of the color visible image were averaged and then the intensity component image was attained. Secondly, the attained component image and the infrared image were merged based on the NSCT and then a grayscale fused image was obtained. Lastly, a color transfer method based on the lαβ color space was employed to transfer the color information of the color visible image into the fused grayscale image and then the final fused color image wss attained. When the grayscale visible image and the infrared image arefused, according to the physical characters of the infrared image, a weighted averaging scheme based on the local area mean and local area information entropy was proposed for the lowpass subband coefficients. As well, according to the distribution differences of the noise and the geometric characters of the image in the NSCT domain, a selection principle based on the local area direction entropy and the local area energy was proposed for the bandpass directional subband coefficients. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm not only can extract the abundant background information of the visible image and the target localization information of the infrared image, but also can make the fused color image maintain the nature color information of the visible image as much as possible.

Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become a mainstream technology for solving spatial structures of biomacromolecules, while the processing of cryo-EM images is a very challenging task. One of the great challenges is the high noise in the images. A common method is to cluster the images with close projecting angles to get mean images, which are used for 3D reconstruction. However, due to the extremely low signal-to-noise-ratio, common clustering methods often fail to obtain high-quality mean images, leading to poorly reconstructed structures. In this study, we present a new unsupervised learning framework, called NiuEM, to discriminate images captured from different angles and yield cluster-mean images. NiuEM first generates pseudo-labels and then exploits both contrastive loss and cross-entropy loss for training convolutional layers to learn feature representations. Moreover, the pseudo-labels are updated iteratively to enhance the reliability of labels. We assess the performance of NiuEM on four data sets via both visualized and quantitative experiments. Especially, two kinds of metrics are adopted to measure the performance, regarding the clustering quality and the resolution of reconstructed 3D models, respectively. The experimental results show that NiuEM achieves very competitive clustering accuracy in the comparison with the state-of-the-art image clustering methods. Moreover, the cluster mean images yielded by NiuEM lead to better initial 3D models compared with the mainstream reconstruction tools. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel multi-exemplar synthesis image inpainting algorithm with regulatory factor. The Criminisi image inpainting algorithm often experiences problems of mismatch, quality of information diffusion, and high cumulative error. The regulatory factor β is employed in this paper to adjust the priority of the padding edge, which makes the proposed algorithm more sensitive to the details of the image textures and improves the boundary repairing effect. Combining the gradient information and histogram information to find the best matching block, the multiple exemplars synthesis strategy is introduced to satisfy the vision requirements of image fusion. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to provide very competitive results in comparison with the Criminisi algorithm. © 2015 ICIC International.

Shuffled frog leaping (SFL) is a population based, cooperative search metaphor inspired by natural memetics. Its ability of adapting to dynamic environment makes SFL become one of the most important memetic algorithms. In order to improve the algorithmpsilas stability and the ability to search the global optimum, a novel dasiacognition componentpsila is introduced to enhance the effectiveness of the SFL, namely frog not only adjust its position according to the best individual within the memeplex or the global best of population but also according to thinking of the frog itself. To validate the improved SFL (ISFL) method, numerous simulations were conducted to compare SFL and ISFL using six benchmark problems for continuous and discrete optimization. According to the simulation results, adding the cognitive behavior to SFL significantly enhances the performance of SFL in solving the optimization problems, and the improvements are more evident with the scale of the problem increasing.

Unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are identified as an integral part of future military forces. The coordinated route-planning problems of UAV team with various architectures are addressed in the framework of game theory. A two-stage route planner has been proposed, which combines various game models and the concept of evolutionary computation and is compatible with the cooperative/competitive nature envisioned for UAV team. Our route planner can handle different kinds of mission constraints in hierarchical style. Potential routes of each vehicle form their own sub-population, and evolve only in their own sub-population, while the cooperation and competition among UAVs are reflected by the definition of fitness function. Experimental results show the feasibility of generating the coordinated routes for UAV team using game theory methods.

Real time performance improvement of electrical resistance tomography

This paper puts forward a novel design for a high-speed residual potential discharge circuit that improves real time performance of an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) system. The authors' analysis of transient time effects at the electrode-electrolyte surface of a model ERT sensor used with bi-directional current pulse excitation found that a large amount of accumulated charge is produced between the excitation electrodes due to electrode polarization. This part of the residual potential is bound to produce a huge measuring noise and its attenuation speed greatly affects real time performance of the ERT system. Therefore, a novel high-speed discharge circuit is designed to eliminate measuring noise generated by the residual potential. Two simulation tests are conducted on the denoising effect of the new circuit and the results show that the circuit can effectively eliminate residual potential between excitation electrodes. The high speed discharging circuit is also used in an ERT system developed by the authors (using bi-directional current pulse excitation) for an off-line experiment case, where the system achieved a speed of 3877 frames per second. The result shows that this technology can be applied to significantly improve real-time ERT system performance. © 2012 ICIC International.
