Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. Reinforcement learning (RL) has made great success in recent years. Generally, the learning process requires a huge amount of interaction with the environment before an agent can achieve acceptable performance. This motivates many techniques, such as incorporating prior knowledge which is usually presented as experts' demonstration, and using a probability distribution to represent state-and-action values, to accelerate the learning process. The methods perform well when the prior knowledge is genuinely correct and no much change occurs to the learning environment. However, the requirement is not perfectly realistic in many complex applications. The demonstration knowledge may not reflect the true environment and even be full of noise. In this article, we introduce a dynamic distribution merging method to improve knowledge utilization in a general RL algorithm, namely Q-learning. The new method adapts a normal distribution to represent state-action values and merges the prior and learned knowledge in a discriminative way. We theoretically analyze the new learning method and demonstrate its empirical performance over multiple problem domains. © 2020 IEEE.

Accelerating local SGD for non-IID data using variance reduction

Distributed stochastic gradient descent and its variants have been widely adopted in the training of machine learning models,which apply multiple workers in *** them,local-based algorithms,including Local SGD and FedAvg,have gained much attention due to their superior properties,such as low communication cost and ***,when the data distribution on workers is non-identical,local-based algorithms would encounter a significant degradation in the convergence *** this paper,we propose Variance Reduced Local SGD(VRL-SGD)to deal with the heterogeneous *** extra communication cost,VRL-SGD can reduce the gradient variance among workers caused by the heterogeneous data,and thus it prevents local-based algorithms from slow convergence ***,we present VRL-SGD-W with an effectivewarm-up mechanism for the scenarios,where the data among workers are quite *** from eliminating the impact of such heterogeneous data,we theoretically prove that VRL-SGD achieves a linear iteration speedup with lower communication complexity even if workers access non-identical *** conduct experiments on three machine learning *** experimental results demonstrate that VRL-SGD performs impressively better than Local SGD for the heterogeneous data and VRL-SGD-W is much robust under high data variance among workers.

Pre-trained language models (PLMs) are shown to be vulnerable to minor word changes, which poses a big threat to real-world systems. While previous studies directly focus on manipulating word inputs, they are limited by their means of generating adversarial samples, lacking generalization to versatile real-world attack. This paper studies the basic structure of transformer-based PLMs, the self-attention (SA) mechanism. (1) We propose a powerful perturbation technique HackAttend, which perturbs the attention scores within the SA matrices via meticulously crafted attention masks. We show that state-of-the-art PLMs fall into heavy vulnerability that minor attention perturbations (1%) can produce a very high attack success rate (98%). Our paper expands the conventional text attack of word perturbations to more general structural perturbations. (2) We introduce S-Attend, a novel smoothing technique that effectively makes SA robust via structural perturbations. We empirically demonstrate that this simple yet effective technique achieves robust performance on par with adversarial training when facing various text attackers. We present a third version of the PraK system designed around an effective text-image and image-image search model. The system integrates sub-image search options for localized context search for CLIP and image color/texture and interfaces tailored to specific task types. A user study shows the benefits of sub-image search in homogeneous video collections. This paper presents a tool relying on data service architecture, where technical details of all VBS datasets are completely hidden behind an abstract stateless data layer. The data services allow independent development of interactive search interfaces and refinement techniques, which is demonstrated by a smart front-end component. The component supports common search features and allows users to exploit content-based statistics for effective filtering. In order to promote the evaluation performance of deep learning infrared automatic target recognition (ATR) algorithms in the complex environment of air-to-air missile research, we proposed an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) evaluation system consisting of the target recognition ability, the generalization recognition ability, the anti-interference ability, the background suppression ability, and the cost metrics ability. According to detailed quantitative analysis and experimental results, we establish probability evaluation models and get their probability values. Compared with traditional evaluation systems, our proposed method implementation is showing high reliability. Similar superior performances are also achieved, such as quick, comprehensive, and scientific. Through the above research, the key technology of deep learning performance evaluation in automatic target recognition has been broken through, which provides some basis and guidance for the analysis of infrared imaging-guided weapon systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
