In computer systems, printable characters include not only 62 alphanumeric characters (0-9, a-z and A-Z) but also non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. *, \, ∧, %). Base64 is a commonly used encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format However, for Base64, non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. *, \, ∧, %) are problematic for filenames and URLs. For example, “+” is error-prone in URL and “/” is not allowed in filenames. To address this issue, we propose a new method, Base62x, as an alternative approach to Base64. The proposed method is more effective in application development and fully compatible with symbol-sensitive applications, such as, file systems, IP addresses and safe transmission of non-ASCII over the Internet.

Cloud computing has dramatically reshaped the whole IT industry in recent years. With the transition from IPv4 to IPv6, services running in Cloud computing will face problems associated with IPv6 addressing: the notation is too long (39 bytes), there are too many variants of a single IPv6 address and a potential conflict may exist with conventional http_URL notation caused by the use of the colon (:). This paper proposes a new scheme to represent an IPv6 address with a shorter, compact notation (27 bytes), without variants or conflicts with http_URL. The proposal is known as dot-base62x as it is an IPv6 address with Base62x and uses the well-known period (or dot) as a group delimiter instead of the colon. The relative merits and demerits of other works that predate this paper have been reviewed and critically evaluated. Cloud computing, as a continuously emerging mainstream of network-based applications, is likely to be a forerunner in the use of IPv6 as the base protocol. As a result, Cloud computing will benefit most from the new, compact and user-friendly textual representation of IPv6 address proposed by this paper.

Emerging work models increasingly take the form of loosely structured, often self-organising networks of nimble and virtual knowledge work teams within and between organisations. To model such work patterns requires a different approach from that of traditional workflow management systems. This paper presents the conceptual design of a prototype adaptive and collaborative e-Work environment - e-Workbench, which we are currently developing to enable future collaborative workspaces to adapt to emerging knowledge work models. We argue that with appropriate knowledge of tasks, workspaces will be able to adapt to work, and automatically retrieve contextually relevant knowledge elements from the Web in order to contribute creatively to problem solving and semantically manage shared information among collaborating workers. Our goal is to enable e-Workbench to become, not only a working environment but also, a collaborator and a co-worker as a result of its knowledge of work and creative participation in problem solving
