Standard neural machine translation (NMT) is on the assumption that the document-level context is independent. Most existing document-level NMT approaches are satisfied with a smattering sense of global document-level information, while this work focuses on exploiting detailed document-level context in terms of a memory network. The capacity of the memory network that detecting the most relevant part of the current sentence from memory renders a natural solution to model the rich document-level context. In this work, the proposed document-aware memory network is implemented to enhance the Transformer NMT baseline. Experiments on several tasks show that the proposed method significantly improves the NMT performance over strong Transformer baselines and other related studies. © 2019, CC BY.

Background: Various forms of model have been applied to predict the trend of the epidemic since the outbreak of COVID-19 at the hardest-hit city of Wuhan. Methods: In this study, we designed a dynamic graph model, not for precisely predicting the number of infected cases, but for a glance of the dynamics under a public epidemic emergency situation and of different contributing factors. Findings: We demonstrated the impact of asymptomatic transmission in this outbreak and showed the effectiveness of city lockdown to halt virus spread within a city. We further illustrated that sudden emergence of a large number of cases could overwhelm the city medical system, and external medical aids are critical to not only containing the further spread of the virus but also reducing fatality. Interpretation: Our model simulation showed that highly populated modern cities are particularly vulnerable and lessons learned in China could facilitate other countries to plan the proactive and decisive actions. We shall pay close attention to the asymptomatic transmission being suggested by rapidly accumulating evidence as dramatic changes in quarantine protocol are required to contain SARS-CoV-2 from spreading globally. Advanced technologies that can establish intimate, long-lived functional interfaces with neural systems have attracted increasing interest due to their wide-ranging applications in neuroscience, bioelectronic medicine, and the associated treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. A critical challenge of significance remains in the development of electronic platforms that offer conformal contact with soft brain tissue for the sensing or stimulation of brain activities and chronically stable operation in vivo, at scales that range from cellular-level resolution to macroscopic areas. This review summarizes recent advances in this field, with an emphasis on the use of demonstrated concepts, constituent materials, engineered designs, and system integration to address the current challenges. The article begins with an overview of recent bioelectronic platforms with unique form factors, ranging from filamentary probes to conformal sheets and three-dimensional frameworks for alleviating the mechanical mismatch between interface materials and neural tissues. Next, active interfaces which utilize inorganic/organic semiconductor-enabled devices are reviewed, highlighting various working principles of recording mechanisms including capacitively and conductively coupled sensing enabled by high transistor matrices at high spatiotemporal resolution. The subsequent section presents approaches to biological integration which use active materials for multiplexed addressing, local amplification and multimodal operation with high-channel-count and large-scale electronic systems in a safe fashion that provides multi-decade stable performance in both animal models and human subjects. The advances summarized in this review will guide the future direction of this technology and provide a basis for next-generation chronic neural interfaces with long-lived high-performance operation.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Channel estimation for wireless communication systems assisted by large intelligent surfaces

—In this letter, the channel estimation problem is studied for wireless communication systems assisted by large intelligent surface. Due to features of assistant channel, channel estimation (CE) problem for the investigated system is shown as a constrained estimation error minimization problem, which differs from traditional CE problems. A Lagrange multiplier and dual ascent-based estimation scheme is then designed to obtain a closed-form solution for the estimator iteratively. Moreover, the Cramér-Rao lower bounds are deduced for performance evaluation. Simulation results show that the designed scheme could improve estimation accuracy up to 18%, compared with least square method in low signal-to-noise ratio regime. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. —Ambient backscatter, an emerging green communication technology, has aroused great interest from both academia and industry. One open problem for ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) systems is channel estimation for a massive-antenna reader. In this paper, we focus on channel estimation problem in AmBC systems with uniform linear array (ULA) at the reader which consists of large number of antennas. We first design a two-step method to jointly estimate channel gains and direction of arrivals (DoAs), and then refine the estimates through angular rotation. Additionally, Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) are derived for both the modulus of the channel gain and the DoA estimates. Simulations are then provided to validate the analysis, and to show the efficiency of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the attitude control problem of rigid body is addressed with considering inertia uncertainty,bounded time-varying disturbances, angular velocity-free measurement, and unknown non-symmetric saturation input. Using a mathematical transformation, the effects of bounded time-varying disturbances, uncertain inertia,and saturation input are combined as total disturbances. A novel finite-time observer is designed to estimate the unknown angular velocity and the total disturbances. For attitude control, an observer-based sliding-mode control protocol is proposed to force the system state convergence to the desired sliding-mode surface; the finite-time stability is guaranteed via Lyapunov theory analysis. Finally, a numerical simulation is presented to illustrate the effective performance of the proposed sliding-mode control protocol.

Integrating a weighted-average method into the random walk framework to generate individual friend recommendations

Friend recommendation is a fundamental service in both social networks and practical applications,and is influenced by user behaviors such as interactions, interests, and activities. In this study, we first conduct in-depth investigations on factors that affect recommendation results. Next, we design Friend++, a hybrid multi-individual recommendation model that integrates a weighted average method(WAM) into the random walk(RW) framework by seamlessly employing social ties, behavior context, and personal information. In Friend++, the first plus signifies recommending a new friend through network features, while the second plus stands for using node features. To verify our method, we conduct experiments on three social datasets crawled from the Sina microblog system(Weibo). Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms six baseline methods in terms of recall, precision, F1-measure, and MAP. As a final step, we describe a case study that demonstrates the scalability and universality of our method. Through discussion, we reach a meaningful conclusion: although common interests are more important than user activities in making recommendations, user interactions may be the most important factor in finding the most appropriate potential friends.

The number of international benchmarking competitions is steadily increasing in various fields of machine learning (ML) research and practice. So far, however, little is known about the common practice as well as bottlenecks faced by the community in tackling the research questions posed. To shed light on the status quo of algorithm development in the specific field of biomedical imaging analysis, we designed an international survey that was issued to all participants of challenges conducted in conjunction with the IEEE ISBI 2021 and MICCAI 2021 conferences (80 competitions in total). The survey covered participants' expertise and working environments, their chosen strategies, as well as algorithm characteristics. A median of 72% challenge participants took part in the survey. According to our results, knowledge exchange was the primary incentive (70%) for participation, while the reception of prize money played only a minor role (16%). While a median of 80 working hours was spent on method development, a large portion of participants stated that they did not have enough time for method development (32%). 25% perceived the infrastructure to be a bottleneck. Overall, 94% of all solutions were deep learning-based. Of these, 84% were based on standard architectures. 43% of the respondents reported that the data samples (e.g., images) were too large to be processed at once. This was most commonly addressed by patch-based training (69%), downsampling (37%), and solving 3D analysis tasks as a series of 2D tasks. We propose the application of a novel sub-ontology extractionmethodology for achieving interoperability and improving the semantic validity of information retrieval in the medical information systems (MIS) domain. The system offers advanced profiling of a user’s field of specialization by exploiting the concept of sub-ontology extraction, i.e., each sub-ontology may subsequently represent a particular user profile. Semantic profiling of a user’s field of specialization or interest is necessary functionality in any medical domain information retrieval system;this is because the (structural and semantic) extent of information sources is massive and individual users are only likely to be interested in specific parts of the overall knowledge documents on the basis of their area of specialization. The prototypical system, OntoMOVE, has been specifically designed for application in themedical information systems domain. OntoMOVE utilizes semantic web standards like RDF(S) and OWL in addition to medical domain standards and vocabularies encompassed by the UMLS knowledge sources. © 2018, The Authors.
