Most existing language modeling approaches are based on the term independence hypothesis. To go beyond this assumption, two main directions were investigated. The first one considers the use of the proximity features that capture the degree to which search terms appear close to each other in a document. Another one considers the use of semantic relationships between words. Previous studies have proven that these two types of information, including term proximity features and semantic relationships between words, are both useful to improve retrieval performance. Intuitionally, we can use them in combination to further improve retrieval performance. Based on this idea, this paper propose a positional translation language model to explicitly incorporate both of these two types of information under language modeling framework in a unified way. In the first step, we present a proximity-based method to estimate word-word translation probabilities. Then, we define a translation document model for each position of a document and use these document models to score the document. Experimental results on standard TREC collections show that the proposed model achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art models, including positional language model, and translation language models. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Nowadays, identification of persons has a great importance for information protection and access control. Thus, automatic person identification based on biometrics has become a focus of interest both for research and commercial purposes. Among the biometrics used, palmprint identification is one of the most stable and reliable technology. Some desirable properties such as uniqueness, stability, and non invasiveness make this technology suitable for highly reliable person identification. In this paper, a method is proposed based on Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) descriptors for palmprint identification. This method utilized the fusion, at matching score level, of some classifiers (Radial Basis Function (RBF), Random Forest Transform (RTF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM)) to improve the performance in identification accuracy. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method with respect to the identification rate.

Cache-coherent shared memory is critical for programmability in many-core systems. Several directory-based schemes have been proposed, but dynamic, non-uniform sharing make efficient directory storage challenging, with each giving up storage space, performance or energy. We introduce SpongeDirectory, a sparse directory structure that exploits multi-level memristory technology. SpongeDirectory expands directory storage in-place when needed by increasing the number of bits stored on a single memristor device, trading latency and energy for storage. We explore several SpongeDirectory configurations, finding that a provisioning rate of 0.5× with memristors optimized for low energy consumption is the most competitive. This optimal SpongeDirectory configuration has performance comparable to a conventional sparse directory, requires 18× less storage space, and consumes 8× less energy.

We explore whether we can observe Time's Arrow in a temporal sequence-is it possible to tell whether a video is running forwards or backwards? We investigate this some-what philosophical question using computer vision and machine learning techniques. We explore three methods by which we might detect Time's Arrow in video sequences, based on distinct ways in which motion in video sequences might be asymmetric in time. We demonstrate good video forwards/backwards classification results on a selection of YouTube video clips, and on natively-captured sequences (with no temporally-dependent video compression), and examine what motions the models have learned that help discriminate forwards from backwards time.

The increasing availability of massive mobile phone call data records (CDR) has opened new opportunities for analyzing and understanding real-life social phenomena and human dynamics. In order to better interpret this enormous amount of data it is useful to contextualize them with information about the circumstances under which they has been generated. Nowadays, linked open data initiative provide access to a huge amount of geo-time referenced knowledge about territory and events that happen in the territory. These informations can be used to characterize the aforementioned context. The aim of this Ph.D is to investigate on the intercorrelations between CDR, contexts, and human behaviors. The ultimate goal is to build a stochastic model, that can be used to predict semantic (qualitative) behavioral patterns on the basis of CDR traffic and context and identify and explain anomalous situations on the basis of deviations from standard CDR patterns.

Stability analysis of cantilever retaining wall with FEM

Based on shear strength reduction finite element method, the influence of width of heel plate and toe plate, uniform load, height of retaining wall, parameters of filling on stability of cantilever retaining wall have been analyzed. It is indicated that the fractured surface is the boundary of "protected" and "unprotected" filling soil, which is essentially different with the second fractured surface of planar retaining wall. The stability of retaining wall increased with width of heel plate or toe board or distance of uniform load increased, and decreased with height of retaining wall or value uniform load of increased. It is advised to fill the retaining wall by the soil with low weight, big cohesive strength and big internal friction angle.
