Incorporating prior knowledge into learning by dividing training data

In most large-scale real-world pattern classification problems, there is always some explicit information besides given training data, namely prior knowledge, with which the training data are organized. In this paper, we proposed a framework for incorporating this kind of prior knowledge into the training of min-max modular (M3) classifier to improve learning performance. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we perform experiments on a large-scale Japanese patent classification problem and consider two kinds of prior knowledge included in patent documents: patent's publishing date and the hierarchical structure of patent classification system. In the experiments, traditional support vector machine (SVM) and Ma-SVM without prior knowledge are adopted as baseline classifiers. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the baseline classifiers in terms of training cost and generalization accuracy. Moreover, Ma-SVM with prior knowledge is found to be much more robust than traditional support vector machine to noisy dated patent samples, which is crucial for incremental learning.

Recently, failure detection by acoustic data is applied to quality check such as new or used bill classification. However, it is difficult to reduce the noise in acoustic data of bill by conventional techniques since there are many types of noises in the environment. In this paper, we propose a method by using an adaptive digital filter and a neural network to reduce noises in acoustic data of bill. First, the acoustic data is divided into some frequency bands by the wavelet transform. Next, each data is passed through two types of filters to reduce the noise. One is an adaptive digital filter trained by the LMS algorithm, and the other is a nonlinear filter based on a neural network trained by the error back-propagation method. Then the processed data in each frequency band are composed to get an estimated signal. Finally, simulation results are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed method compared with conventional approaches. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Pervasive computing in play-based occupational therapy for children

Researchers conducted a study to demonstrate a play-based occupational therapy model based on the model of human occupation (MOHO). The model employed pervasive computing technologies to determine behavior and revealed that the deliberate subsystem was facilitated by applying theories of playfulness. The researchers stated that play comprised of three primary elements, such as intrinsic motivation, internal control, and suspension of reality. They investigated various projects that integrated pervasive computing with play-based occupational therapy for children. Two of these projects were the Playful Tray and the Playful Toothbrush that investigated eating and brushing behaviors in children. The Playful Tray project revealed that spending excessive time to eat a meal affected the child's routine and contributed to negative parent-child interaction during mealtime despite nutritional concerns.

This article presents the formal definition and description of popular topics on the Internet,analyzes the relationship between popular words and topics,and finally introduces a method that uses statistics and correlation of the popular words in traffic content and network flow characteristics as input for extracting popular topics on the *** on this,this article adapts a clustering algorithm to extract popular topics and gives formalized *** test results show that this method has an accuracy of 16.7%in extracting popular topics on the *** with web mining and topic detection and tracking(TDT),it can provide a more suitable data source for effective recovery of Internet public opinions.

HowNet-based Chinese Word Lexical Semantic Similarity Measurement (WLSSM) pattern is proposed in this paper, in which the organization structure of HowNet is used to extract abundant semantic information. This paper utilizes the grammatical rules of knowledge Database Mark-up Language (KDML) and adopts both maximum matching in each level of sememe and depth information of sememes for WLSSM. Compared with some classic measurements, the proposed method can distinguish word pairs in different semantic similarity levels, and the computation results are more consistent with human being's subjective feeling.

Analytical and numerical solutions of the Schroedinger Equation which was satisfied by the propagator P(b, a) , including all the paths contribution, are discussed. The definition of Schrödinger transform of image is first proposed. Exterior and interior of objects are obtained from Schroedinger transforms of original image and its inverse image. Using the bruteforce algorithm, sets of exterior and interior points are thinned. By finding pairs of exterior and interior points with the smallest distance between them, contours of multiple objects are extracted. Some experiments with simulated and real images are given. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical engineering.

In this paper, we first present some dynamic TS fuzzy subsystems to approximate a nonlinear system. To make the subsystems asymptotically stable, the reference model with the same fuzzy sets of the system rule is established. A feedback controller is designed based on an exact approximation model. The control gain can be solved by LMI approach. Since in practical plant, there are parameters uncertainty and external disturbance in approximation models, we propose a new controller with an adaptive fuzzy control term to compensate the uncertainty and alleviate the disturbance. Lyapunov constitute techniques can prove the stability of the closed loop systems. The simulations results illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.

An axis-shifted grid-clustering algorithm

These spatial clustering methods can be classified into four categories: partitioning method, hierarchical method, density-based method and grid-based method. The grid-based clustering algorithm, which partitions the data space into a finite number of cells to form a grid structure and then performs all clustering operations to group similar spatial objects into classes on this obtained grid structure, is an efficient clustering algorithm. To cluster efficiently and simultaneously, to reduce the influences of the size and borders of the cells, a new grid-based clustering algorithm, an Axis-Shifted Grid-Clustering algorithm (ASGC), is proposed in this paper. This new clustering method combines a novel density-grid based clustering with axis-shifted partitioning strategy to identify areas of high density in the input data space. The main idea is to shift the original grid structure in each dimension of the data space after the clusters generated from this original structure have been obtained. The shifted grid structure can be considered as a dynamic adjustment of the size of the original cells and reduce the weakness of borders of cells. And thus, the clusters generated from this shifted grid structure can be used to revise the originally obtained clusters. The experimental results verify that, indeed, the effect of this new algorithm is less influenced by the size of cells than other grid-based ones and requires at most a single scan through the data.

This paper proposed a novel Region of Interest (ROI) based rate control algorithm for video communication systems, in which the subjective quality of ROI can be adjusted according to users' requirements. In the proposed scheme, in order to analyze the relationship between subjective quality and encoding parameters, a structural similarity index map - quantization parameter (SSIM-QP) model is established. Through this relation, the possible visual quality range of ROI is defined according to the range of ROI QP, which is predicted by rate control algorithm. Then, with interest levels being identified within the visual quality range, resources allocated to ROI is determined. Finally, considering both the quality of ROI and the entire frame, resource allocation is slightly adjusted. Experimental results demonstrate that the subjective visual quality of ROI in our proposed scheme can be adjustable improved compared to the existing rate control algorithms.
