The diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases within the small intestine has been greatly advanced with the introduction of the endoscopic microcapsule in recent years. In an effort to increase its reliability and expand its functionality, a mechanism for stopping and locomoting the capsule within the digestive tract is proposed in this paper. This mechanism, actuated by shape memory alloy wires, utilizes a synthetic microfibrillar adhesive similar to the attachment mechanisms employed by beetles. This fibrillar attachment mechanism is a combination of molecular adhesion caused by van der Waals forces and liquid adhesion caused by capillary forces. The molecular adhesion is enhanced by the presence of microfibers, and the liquid adhesion arises from a secretion from the beetle's footpad. A synthetic version of the beetle's footpad was fabricated from PDMS using a silicon mold. Another version was created from SU-8 using photolithography. Testing revealed decent adhesion with glass and prepared pig intestine in vitro both with a silicone oil to simulate the secretion and without it. A prototype robot with simple polymer adhesive pads for stopping successfully attached and detached inside a flexible vinyl tube. An inch worm locomotion mechanism is proposed and is in the preliminary stages of fabrication and testing

A new classification methodology with controlled error rates and a reject option is proposed in this paper. The proposed methodology is implemented using support vector machine's (SVM's) posterior probability preserving property. A new nonparametric method is proposed to accurately estimate error rates from the output of a trained SVM. The experimental results clearly demonstrate the efficacy of the suggested classifier design methodology.

In order to support multimedia communication, it is necessary to develop routing algorithms that make decisions based on multiple Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems have multiple QoS requirements. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult because finding a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete problem. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multi-purpose optimization method for QoS routing based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that the proposed method has a good performance and therefore is a promising method for QoS routing.

The fractal dimension is useful in discriminating different textures of images. Also, the distinction between the 'texture' of speech signals and that of noise should exist because speech signals are regular 'man-made' processes and noises are random 'natural' processes. Through experiments, we found that the fractal dimension of speech signals is distinctly different from that of noise. Thus, a fractal based voice activity detector (VAD) is proposed. The experimental results show that the proposed VAD outperforms two traditional approaches based on energy and zero-crossing rate at low SNR. Applied to the Internet telephone developed by us, this VAD improves the quality of service.

knowledge Grid is a platform that enables uniform and effective knowledge sharing and management across the Internet. Based on this platform, this paper proposes a cooperative learning environment KGCL. It supports the knowledge-level cooperation between human and computer, and enables the enrichment of not only the resources in the knowledge Grid but also the knowledge of users by means of knowledge refinement, knowledge reuse and drawing together online participants. Currently, the prototype of the KGCL has been implemented and is available for use online. Experiments show that the environment can promote the effectiveness of teamwork. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

A great challenge for web site designers is how to ensure users' easy access to important web pages efficiently. In this paper we present a clustering-based approach to address this problem. Our approach to this challenge is to perform efficient and effective correlation analysis based on web logs and construct clusters of web pages to reflect the co-visit behavior of web site users. We present a novel approach for adapting previous clustering algorithms that are designed for databases in the problem domain of web page clustering, and show that our new methods can generate high-quality clusters for very large web logs when previous methods fail. Based on the high-quality clustering results, we then apply the data-mined clustering knowledge to the problem of adapting web interfaces to improve users' performance. We develop an automatic method for web interface adaptation: by introducing index pages that minimize overall user browsing costs. The index pages are aimed at providing short cuts for users to ensure that users get to their objective web pages fast, and we solve a previously open problem of how to determine an optimal number of index pages. We empirically show that our approach performs better than many of the previous algorithms based on experiments on several realistic web log files. © 2002, Springer-Verlag London Limited.

An omni-face detection scheme for image/video content description is proposed in this paper. It provides the ability to extract high-level features in terms of human activities rather than low-level features like color, texture and shape. The system relies on an omni-face detection system capable of locating human faces over a broad range of views in color images or videos with complex scenes. It uses the presence of skin-tone pixels coupled with shape, edge pattern and face-specific features to locate faces. The main distinguishing contribution of this work is being able to detect faces irrespective of their poses, including frontal-view and side-view, whereas contemporary systems deal with frontal-view faces only. The other novel aspects of the work lie in its iterative candidate filtering to segment objects from extraneous region, the use of Hausdorff distance-based normalized similarity measure to identify side-view facial profiles, and the exploration of hidden Markov model (HMM) to verify the presence of a side-view face. Image and video can be assigned with semantic descriptors based on human face information for later indexing and retrieval. Copyright © ACM 2000.

Factorization method for multiple perspective views via iterative depth estimation

This paper proposes a factorization method that reconstructs camera motion and scene shape based on the matching of multiple images under the condition that the camera captures a perspective view. Starting from the affine projection camera model, the projection depth is iteratively estimated until the measurement matrix has rank 4. Then, the obtained measurement matrix is factorized to restore the three-dimensional information of the scene in the projection space. This approach eliminates noise sensitive processes, such as the calculation of the fundamental matrix, that are required in the factorization for the conventional perspective projection image, and a stable reconstruction is realized. Furthermore, the metric constraint in the conventional affine model is extended, and the metric constraint in the perspective projection condition is derived. It is shown that the reconstruction in Euclidean space is realized if the internal parameters of the camera are given.
