In statistical machine translation (SMT) research, phrase-based methods have been receiving more interest in recent years. In this paper, we first give a brief survey of phrase-based SMT framework, and then make detailed comparisons of two typical implementations: alignment template approach and standard phrase-based approach. At last, we propose an improved model to integrate alignment template into standard phrase-based SMT as a new feature in a log-linear model. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the baseline method.

In this working note, we mainly focus on the image annotation subtask of imageCLEF 2015 challenge that BUAA-iCC research group participated. For this task, we firstly explore textual similarity information between each test sample and predefined concept. Subsequently, two different kinds of semantic information are extracted from visual images: visual tags using generic object recognition classifiers and visual tags relevant to human being related concepts. For the former information, the visual tags are predicted by using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and a set of support vector machines trained on imageNet, and finally transferred to textual information. For the latter visual information, human related concepts are extracted via face and facial attribute detection, and finally transferred to similarity information by using manually designed mapping rules, in order to enhance the performance of annotating human related concepts. Meanwhile, a late fusion strategy is developed to incorporate aforementioned various kinds of similarity information. Results validate that the combination of the textual and visual similarity information and the adopted late fusion strategy could yield significantly better performance.

A noise erosion operator based on partial differential equation (PDE) is introduced, which has an excellent ability of noise removal and edge preservation for two-dimensional (2D) gradient data. The operator is applied to estimate a new diffusion coefficient. Experimental results demonstrate that anisotropic diffusion based on this new erosion operator can efficiently reduce noise and sharpen object boundaries.

Efficient reconfigurable VLSI architecture for 1-D 5/3 and 9/7 wavelet transforms adopted in JPEG2000 proposal, based on lifting scheme is proposed. The embedded decimation technique based on fold and time multiplexing, as well as embedded boundary data extension technique, is adopted to optimize the design of the architecture. These reduce significantly the required numbers of the multipliers, adders and registers, as well as the amount of accessing external memory, and lead to decrease efficiently the hardware cost and power consumption of the design. The architecture is designed to generate an output per clock cycle, and the detailed component and the approximation of the input signal are available alternately. Experimental simulation and comparison results are presented, which demonstrate that the proposed architecture has lower hardware complexity, thus it is adapted for embedded applications. The presented architecture is simple, regular and scalable, and well suited for VLSI implementation.
