Video anomaly detection plays a significant role in intelligent surveillance systems. To enhance model’s anomaly recognition ability, previous works have typically involved RGB, optical flow, and text features. Recently, dynamic vision sensors (DVS) have emerged as a promising technology, which capture visual information as discrete events with a very high dynamic range and temporal resolution. It reduces data redundancy and enhances the capture capacity of moving objects compared to conventional camera. To introduce this rich dynamic information into the surveillance field, we created the first DVS video anomaly detection benchmark, namely UCF-Crime-DVS. To fully utilize this new data modality, a multi-scale spiking fusion network (MSF) is designed based on spiking neural networks (SNNs). This work explores the potential application of dynamic information from event data in video anomaly detection. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework on UCF-Crime-DVS and its superior performance compared to other models, establishing a new baseline for SNN-based weakly supervised video anomaly detection. Photovoltaic – Battery Energy Storage Systems (PVBESS) are a promising solution against technical bottlenecks of high PV penetration. Public buildings are suitable for installation, although currently underexploited, while high BESS costs limit technology diffusion. This paper assesses the economic feasibility of PV-BESS in public buildings with flexible demand, through simulations showcasing BESS subsidisation impact and self-sufficiency contribution. The results derived that smaller PV-BESS sizes are more attractive investments, as larger systems are characterised by reduced profitability, while BESS subsidisation enhances system profitability. Shifting a small portion of load demand improves economic feasibility by decreasing BESS size, while combining PV production, energy storage, and energy flexibility is the optimal solution for public buildings against electricity prices. Finally, a trade-off between economic feasibility and energy self-sufficiency is observed. The results can be utilised by policymakers to design strategies for BESS promotion, while professionals can perform accurate system sizing, thus avoiding excess system capacities.

With the increasing prevalence of autonomous vehicles (AVs), their vulnerability to various types of attacks has grown, presenting significant security challenges. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL)-based approach for designing optimal stealthy integrity attacks on AV actuators. We also analyze the limitations of state-of-the-art RL-based secure controllers developed to counter such attacks. In recent years, the number of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications has increased. However, navigating them indoors is still tricky because no GPS signals are available, and the obstacles constantly change. This study exploits the collaboration between convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and reinforcement learning (RL) to overcome these challenges, improving the level of independence of UAVs in indoor settings. We present a new technique known as potential-based reward shaping, which directly incorporates expert knowledge into the reinforcement learning framework. This technique efficiently addresses the problem of sparse rewards that often hinder learning in conventional RL configurations. In addition, we have created a reflective reinforcement learning agent that systematically assesses its actions to prioritize those that result in the most substantial enhancements. We have extensively evaluated the performance of our method with the High-Definition Indoor Navigation (HDIN) dataset to show that our method continuously outperformed current non-introspective RL techniques in terms of decision-making speed and navigation accuracy in this evaluation. The results show that this new CNN-RL combination is feasible and suggests a scalable method for complex indoor navigation problems. © 2024 IEEE.

Predictive maintenance is crucial for optimizing the performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems by proactively addressing potential issues before they escalate. Even though many fault diagnosis methods have been proposed, a major challenge remains the lack of accurate predictive maintenance routines for utility-scale PV systems. The scope of this work is to address this fundamental challenge by proposing a data-driven predictive maintenance alerting routine (that leverages digital twin technologies and decision rules) for detecting and predicting PV system faults. The results demonstrated that the developed predictive maintenance routine yielded a sensitivity of 93.9% for PV utility-scale failure detection over a yearly test period. The findings of the predictive maintenance alerting model proved its capability to anticipate faults up to 10 days in advance, achieving a sensitivity of 83.3%. Finally, the predictive maintenance alerting system can be used by operation and maintenance teams for scheduling corrective actions and optimizing field activities.

Renewable energy generation sources (RESs) are gaining increased popularity due to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate effects of climate change. Planning and managing increasing levels of RESs, specifically solar photovoltaic (PV) generation sources is becoming increasingly challenging. Estimations of solar PV power generations provide situational awareness in distribution system operations. A digital twin (DT) can replicate PV plant behaviors and characteristics in a virtual platform, providing realistic solar PV estimations. Furthermore, neural networks, a popular paradigm of artificial intelligence may be used to adequately learn and replicate the relationship between input and output variables for data-driven DTs (DD-DTs). In this paper, DD-DTs are developed for Clemson University's 1 MW solar PV plant located in South Carolina, USA to perform realistic solar PV power estimations. The DD-DTs are implemented utilizing multilayer perceptron (MLP) and Elman neural networks. Typical practical results for two DD-DT architectures are presented and validated.

In recent years, the global robot market has witnessed substantial growth, particularly in the domain of service robots. Despite their expanding presence, service robots encounter limitations when operating autonomously in unstructured environments, primarily due to their constrained computational capacities. As a solution, the fusion of cloud and edge computing resources becomes imperative to expedite task inference and enhance scenario perception capabilities. The integration of cloud-edge-device models holds significant promise in bolstering the operational efficiency of robots. This entails the dynamic partitioning of intricate robotic tasks, executed collaboratively across cloud, edge, and device resources. In this landscape, deep neural network (DNN) models play a pivotal role in facilitating a wide array of robotic tasks. The inference time for each layer of a DNN model in actual deployment, emerges as a critical determinant in the model’s partitioning strategy. It also serves as an important metric influencing the model’s suitability for a specific hardware platform. This article presents an overview of recent advancements in predicting inference and training time of DNN models, summarizes the related methods, and finally discusses the challenges in this field and the research that can be studied in the future.

It is imperative for energy systems to reduce their environmental footprint in a cost-efficient manner, for which renwable energy sources (RES) and complementary technologies become desirable options to achieve said task. This is particularly the case for systems with different energy sources, as they'd be able to either address one specific type of energy demand and/or allow for the coupling of different energy carriers that would allow for technologies that normally don't interact to start complementing each other. Therefore, this paper proposes various scenarios for the UCY campus in which hydrogen technologies would allow for the electrification of thermal demand while harnessing the surplus production coming from a solar park, which is modelled through the Integrate optimization tool and validated through DidSILENT PowerFactory. The results showcased a rise of up to 58% in self-sufficiency while the annual energy costs and CO2 emissions were reduced by 45% and 48% respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

Amidst the challenges posed by the high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), particularly a number of distributed photovoltaic plants (DPVs), in modern electric power distribution systems (MEPDS), the integration of new technologies and frameworks become crucial for addressing operation, management, and planning challenges. Situational awareness (SA) and situational intelligence (SI) over multi-time scales is essential for enhanced and reliable PV power generation in MEPDS. In this paper, data-driven digital twins (DTs) are developed using AI paradigms to develop actual and/or virtual models of DPV s, These DTs are then applied for estimating and forecasting the power outputs of physical and virtual PV plants. Virtual weather stations are used to estimate solar irradiance and temperature at user-selected locations in a localized region, using inferences from physical weather stations. Three case studies are examined based on data availability: physical PV plant, hybrid PV plants, and virtual PV plants, generating real-time estimations and short-term forecasts of PV power production that can support distribution system studies and decision-making.

Organisms have evolved innate and acquired immune systems to defend against pathogens like coronaviruses. Similarly, power networks, threatened by cyber-attacks, desire cyber-immunity. Inspired by the immunology research, this study develops a cyber-immune strategy-characterizing innate cyber-immunity and establishing acquired cyber-immunity-for any selected portion of a power network (termed as power subnetwork) against stealthy false data injection (FDI) cyberattacks. Therein, without extrinsic protection and information asymmetry, this paper for the first time confirms the existence and provides closed-form conditions for power subnetworks that are innately immune to FDI cyber-attacks despite all measurements being compromised. Single-leader-multi-follower bi-level optimization models are then developed to strategically allocate measurement protection, leading to the acquired cyber-immunity, whose conditions for existence and the least cost are explicitly formulated. More importantly, a bi-directional cyber-immunity propagation mechanism is presented to provide the optimal spatial allocation of defense resources across adjacent subnetworks. It also explicitly determines the temporal allocation sequence, revealing its sequential and cumulative impacts on establishing cyber-immunity. This is achieved by designing recursive traversal algorithms, one of which is modelled as a post-order depth-first-search problem of a multi-fork tree. The proposed subnetwork-specific cyber-immune strategy is verified in a modified Australian National Electricity Market. © 1969-2012 IEEE.
