Animals use stochastic search strategies to find a potential nest or to localize the food source. Animals do not rely much on the environmental cues or their sensory inputs. Since their cognitive capabilities are rather limited, search strategies are usually simplistic and stochastic. And yet such simple search strategies result in high efficiency in finding potential targets in limited time intervals. Similar problems with perception of the environment and limited computational power and sensory inputs are observed on the mobile robots used in search scenarios. In spite of their limitations, such robotic systems usually perform deterministic search strategies which heavily depend on environmental cues and sensory input. The research question we are addressing in this paper is which stochastic search strategy has the best performance in terms of area coverage and can stochastic search strategies outperform deterministic search strategies.

This paper presents new innovative subsystems of the ER11 prototype urban vehicle which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and ultra-capacitors. The subsystems described here are: 1) the energy management system, which is responsible for the optimization of the fuel efficiency and the increased mileage of the vehicle, 2) the driver's monitoring and control panel and 3) the power transmission system, which offers the possibility of continuous change of gear. The powertrain of the test-bed vehicle consists of an electric motor, a fuel (Η2) cell system, an ultra-capacitor bank and a DC/DC converter. Testing verified that the proposed energy management system is benefitted by the variable transmission of power leading to less fuel consumption.

The invention of atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides new technology for investigating the physiological activities at the single cell and single molecule levels. Lymphoma Raji cells were adsorbed onto the glass slides by coating the glass slides with poly-L-lysine. Rituximabs (anti-CD20 antibody) were linked onto the AFM tip by PEG linker and the CD20-Rituximab binding forces were measured on three lymphoma Raji cells. Then the mechanical properties of the Raji cells were dynamically measured after the Rituximab activation by obtaining force curves on the cell surface. The mechanical properties of lymphoma cells kept stable at the first 20-30 min, and then decreased markedly. Besides, as the CD20-Rituximab binding force increased, the mechanical properties decrease rate increased. The experimental results indicated that the Rituximab's effect is related to CD20-Rituximab binding force and can improve our understanding of Rituximab's variable efficacies in different patients.

In this paper, the estimation of doubly selective channel is considered for amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks. The complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) is chosen to describe the time-varying channel, from which the infinite channel parameters are mapped onto finite ones. Since direct estimation of these coefficients encounters high computational complexity and large spectral cost, we develop an efficient estimator targeting at some specially defined channel parameters. The training sequence design that can minimize the channel estimation mean-square error is also proposed.

It has been shown that the Universum data, which do not belong to either class of the classification problem of interest, may contain useful prior domain knowledge for training a classifier [1], [2]. In this work, we design a novel boosting algorithm that takes advantage of the available Universum data, hence the name UBoost. UBoost is a boosting implementation of Vapnik's alternative capacity concept to the large margin approach. In addition to the standard regularization term, UBoost also controls the learned model's capacity by maximizing the number of observed contradictions. Our experiments demonstrate that UBoost can deliver improved classification accuracy over standard boosting algorithms that use labeled data alone.

This paper is devoted to the modeling problem of hypersonic vehicle with significant couplings. An integrated approach is developed to analytically model the dynamics of hypersonic vehicle, in which the effects of variable mass, spherical rotating earth, and couplings among the sub-models are considered. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis is conducted using the general data of a hypersonic vehicle. The simulation results show that the maximum of the Coriolis force can reach values up to 7.02% of the vehicle weight, and that the thermal load determined by the nonuniform aerodynamic heating and the properties of the structure has a significant influence on the elastic deformation.
