Ecosystems are undergoing unprecedented persistent deterioration due to unsustainable anthropogenic human activities,such as overfishing and deforestation,and the effects of such damage on ecological stability are *** recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies on regime shifts and tipping points,theoretical tools for understanding the extinction chain,which is the sequence of species extinctions resulting from overexploitation,are still lacking,especially for large-scale nonlinear networked *** this study,we developed a mathematical tool to predict regime shifts and extinction chains in ecosystems under multiple exploitation situations and verified it in 26 real-world mutualistic networks of various sizes and *** discovered five phases during the exploitation process:safe,partial extinction,bistable,tristable,and collapse,which enabled the optimal design of restoration strategies for degraded or collapsed *** validated our approach using a 20-year dataset from an eelgrass restoration ***,we also found a specific region in the diagram spanning exploitation rates and competition intensities,where exploiting more species helps increase *** computational tool provides insights into harvesting,fishing,exploitation,or deforestation plans while conserving or restoring the biodiversity of mutualistic ecosystems.

Recent advances in Deep Learning (DL) have enhanced Aging-Related Bug (ARB) prediction for mitigating software aging. However, DL-based ARB prediction models face a dual challenge: overcoming overfitting to enhance generalization and managing the high labeling costs associated with extensive data requirements. To address the first issue, we utilize the sparse and binary nature of spiking communication in Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), which inherently provides brain-inspired regularization to effectively alleviate overfitting. Therefore, we propose a Spiking Convolutional Neural Network (SCNN)-based ARB prediction model along with a training framework that handles the model’s spatial-temporal dynamics and non-differentiable nature. To reduce labeling costs, we introduce a Bio-inspired and Diversity-aware Active Learning framework (BiDAL), which prioritizes highly informative and diverse samples, enabling more efficient usage of the limited labeling budget. This framework incorporates bio-inspired uncertainty to enhance informativeness measurement along with using a diversity-aware selection strategy based on clustering to prevent redundant labeling. Experiments on three ARB datasets show that ARB-SCNN effectively reduces overfitting, improving generalization performance by 6.65% over other DL-based classifiers. Additionally, BiDAL boosts label efficiency for ARB-SCNN training, outperforming four state-of-the-art active learning methods by 4.77% within limited labeling budgets. © 2013 IEEE.

Hierarchical networks are frequently encountered in animal groups,gene networks,and artificial engineering systems such as multiple robots,unmanned vehicle systems,smart grids,wind farm networks,and so *** structure of a large directed hierarchical network is often strongly influenced by reverse edges from lower-to higher-level nodes,such as lagging birds’howl in a flock or the opinions of lowerlevel individuals feeding back to higher-level ones in a social *** study reveals that,for most large-scale real hierarchical networks,the majority of the reverse edges do not affect the synchronization process of the entire network;the synchronization process is influenced only by a small part of these reverse edges along specific *** surprisingly,a single effective reverse edge can slow down the synchronization of a huge hierarchical network by over 60%.The effect of such edges depends not on the network size but only on the average in-degree of the involved *** overwhelming majority of active reverse edges turn out to have some kind of“bunching”effect on the information flows of hierarchical networks,which slows down synchronization *** finding refines the current understanding of the role of reverse edges in many natural,social,and engineering hierarchical networks,which might be beneficial for precisely tuning the synchronization rhythms of these *** study also proposes an effective way to attack a hierarchical network by adding a malicious reverse edge to it and provides some guidance for protecting a network by screening out the specific small proportion of vulnerable nodes.

Existing software composition analysis (SCA) techniques for the C/C++ ecosystem tend to identify the reused components through feature matching between target software project and collected third-party libraries (TPLs). However, feature duplication caused by internal code clone can cause inaccurate SCA results. To mitigate this issue, Centris, a state-of-the-art SCA technique for the C/C++ ecosystem, was proposed to adopt function-level code clone detection to derive the TPL dependencies for eliminating the redundant features before performing SCA tasks. Although Centris has been shown effective in the original paper, the accuracy of the derived TPL dependencies is not evaluated. Additionally, the dataset to evaluate the impact of TPL dependency on SCA is limited. To further investigate the efficacy and limitations of Centris, we first construct two large-scale ground-truth datasets for evaluating the accuracy of deriving TPL dependency and SCA results respectively. Then we extensively evaluate Centris where the evaluation results suggest that the accuracy of TPL dependencies derived by Centris may not well generalize to our evaluation dataset. We further infer the key factors that degrade the performance can be the inaccurate function birth time and the threshold-based recall. In addition, the impact on SCA from the TPL dependencies derived by Centris can be somewhat limited. Inspired by our findings, we propose TPLite with function-level origin TPL detection and graph-based dependency recall to enhance the accuracy of TPL reuse detection in the C/C++ ecosystem. Our evaluation results indicate that TPLite effectively increases the precision from 35.71% to 88.33% and the recall from 49.44% to 62.65% of deriving TPL dependencies compared with Centris. Moreover, TPLite increases the precision from 21.08% to 75.90% and the recall from 57.62% to 64.17% compared with the SOTA academic SCA tool B2SFinder and even outperforms the well-adopted commercial SCA tool BDBA, i.e.

Personalized federated learning (PFL) on graphs is an emerging field focusing on the collaborative development of architectures across multiple clients, each with distinct graph data distributions while adhering to strict privacy standards. This area often requires extensive expert intervention in model design, which is a significant limitation. Recent advancements have aimed to automate the search for graph neural network architectures, incorporating large language models (LLMs) for their advanced reasoning and self-reflection capabilities. However, two technical challenges persist. First, although LLMs are effective in natural language processing, their ability to meet the complex demands of graph neural architecture search (GNAS) is still being explored. Second, while LLMs can guide the architecture search process, they do not directly solve the issue of client drift due to heterogeneous data distributions. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel method, Personalized Federated Graph Neural Architecture Search (PFGNAS). This approach employs a task-specific prompt to identify and integrate optimal GNN architectures continuously. To counteract client drift, PFGNAS utilizes a weight-sharing strategy of supernet, which optimizes the local architectures while ensuring client-specific personalization. Extensive evaluations show that PFGNAS significantly outperforms traditional PFL methods, highlighting the advantages of integrating LLMs into personalized federated learning environments. Fa YOLO: fog-aware instance segmentation of ships with feature refinement in foggy scenes

Ship instance segmentation is essential for intelligent maritime navigation and traffic safety. However, under adverse weather conditions such as fog, the image quality from imaging devices degrades significantly, leading to poor performance of existing instance segmentation methods. To address this challenge, we propose FA YOLO, a ship instance segmentation framework based on interference suppression and feature refinement designed to enhance performance under foggy conditions. First, we propose a Multi-Scale Feature Aggregation Mamba (MFAM) module, which utilizes a state space modeling approach and a multi-scale channel aggregation gating mechanism to enhance long-range dependency modeling and global contextual representation. Second, we propose an Adaptive Fog Dehazing Module (AFDM), which utilizes parallel channel and spatial attention mechanisms along with a window-based multi-head self-attention strategy to suppress fog-related interference and improve focus on target regions. Third, we propose a Multi-Scale Perception-Guided Attention Module (MPAM), which integrates channel-position attention fusion, multi-window branch feature extraction and similarity measurement strategies to adaptively enhance and aggregate multi-scale contextual features. In addition, to address the lack of suitable foggy ship instance segmentation datasets in the community, we collected and annotated a new instance segmentation dataset of maritime ships under foggy conditions, FSISD. This dataset contains 10,249 ship images, covering common ship categories and environmental conditions. Experimental results on Foggy Cityscapes, FSISD and Foggy COCO-boat demonstrate that FA YOLO outperforms the baseline YOLOv8s in segmentation accuracy by 3.3%, 2.2% and 1.3%, respectively, confirming superior performance and strong generalization capability.

Accurate Traffic Flow Prediction (TFP) is crucial for enhancing the efficiency and safety of transportation systems, so it has attracted intensive researches by exploiting spatial-temporal dependencies within road networks. However, existing works only consider the case of centralized data collection with all traffic data observed, which may raise privacy concerns as each region of a city may have its own traffic administration department and the traffic data is not allowed to distribute. Therefore, this paper proposes to use Federated Learning (FL) to address this issue by allowing all clients (i.e., traffic administration departments in all regions in our problem) to collaboratively train TFP models without exchanging raw data, thereby offering a solution in maintaining data privacy. Nevertheless, most existing FL methods aim to learn a global model that performs well universally, so they cannot well handle the non-Independent and Identically Distributed (non-IID) traffic data naturally over different regions. To cope with this problem, this paper develops a new FL framework termed 'personalized Federated learning with Traffic Pattern Sharing' (FedTPS) to solve federated TFP problem. Our FedTPS critically exploits the underlying common traffic patterns (e.g., morning and evening rush hours) shared across different city regions and meanwhile maintaining the region-specific data characteristics in a personalized FL manner. Specifically, to extract the common traffic patterns, we decompose the traffic data in each client via using discrete wavelet transform, where the low-frequency components uncover the stable traffic dynamics of different regions and thus can be considered as the common traffic patterns. These common patterns are then shared among different clients through traffic pattern repositories on the server side to aid the global collaborative traffic flow modeling. While third-party libraries (TPLs) are extensively reused to enhance productivity during software development, they can also introduce potential security risks such as vulnerability propagation. Software composition analysis (SCA), proposed to identify reused TPLs for reducing such risks, has become an essential procedure within modern DevSecOps. As one of the mainstream SCA techniques, binary-to-source SCA identifies the third-party source projects contained in binary files via binary source code matching, which is a major challenge in reverse engineering since binary and source code exhibit substantial disparities after compilation. The existing binary-to-source SCA techniques leverage basic syntactic features that suffer from redundancy and lack robustness in the large-scale TPL dataset, leading to inevitable false positives and compromised recall. To mitigate these limitations, we introduce BinaryAI, a novel binary-to-source SCA technique with two-phase binary source code matching to capture both syntactic and semantic code features. First, BinaryAI trains a transformer-based model to produce function-level embeddings and obtain similar source functions for each binary function accordingly. Then by applying the link-time locality to facilitate function matching, BinaryAI detects the reused TPLs based on the ratio of matched source functions. Our experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of BinaryAI in terms of binary source code matching and the downstream SCA task. Specifically, our embedding model outperforms the state-of-the-art model CodeCMR, i.e., achieving 22.54% recall@l and 0.34 MRR compared with 10.75% and 0.17 respectively. Additionally, BinaryAI outperforms all existing binary-to-source SCA tools in TPL detection, increasing the precision from 73.36% to 85.84% and recall from 59.81% to 64.98% compared with the well-recognized commercial SCA product Black Duck.
