Memory performance prediction of web server applications based on grey system theory

With the success of internet, recently more and more companies start to run web-based business. While running e-business sites, many companies have encountered unexpected degeneration of their web server applications performance, which may lead to loss of customers. Many managers wish to have a decision-support tool that cancan answer such questions, such as "will my web server applications performance degenerate?", and "what are the main reasons of the degenerations?". In this paper we first propose a new memory performance prediction model of web server applications based on grey system theory. And then, a software system "Memory Performance Manager" (MPM) is developed for predicting memory performance of the web server applications. Massive experiments demonstrate that the effectiveness of MPM's in predicting web server memory performances. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Diagnosis for wireless sensor networks is difficult, due to the limited resources and the ad hoc manner of networks. The existing approaches mainly focus on collecting diagnosis metrics, which bring heavy communication overhead to the network. We present a new model called DSD for network diagnosis which deduce the root causes for failures using the sensing data traces. We discover that the characteristics of the sensing data reflect the network status in some way, according to considerable experiments in the GreenOrbs project. We mine the relationships between the sensing data and the failures in the sensor networks, and record them in a failure knowledge library. Through this diagnosis mechanism, we deduce the root cause of the failures without adding any additional network burden. Moreover, the failure knowledge library can be used to improve the efficiency of diagnosis. We analyze the three months sensing data from the GreenOrbs project, and experimental results show that the proposed scheme can improve the diagnosis performance with low energy cost.

In recent years,the threshold for removing noise based on wavelet transform has been very widely used because of its effectiveness and ***,there has been threshold based on a variety of frequency-domain *** the process of denoising,due to the differentiation of transform coefficients generated by noise and edge information,a good threshold for denoising can make a significant impact on the image *** currently existing threshold,spatially adaptive threshold based on Context-Modeling is proposed because of having considered neighboring coefficients so that it can adjust to coefficient *** this paper the improved spatially adaptive threshold method is applied to the nonsubsampled contourlet *** results show that the method yields superior image quality and higher PSNR.

To enhance classification performance by making use of easily available unlabelled data to overcome the scarcity of labelled data, this paper proposes an Embedded Co-Adaboost algorithm that integrates multi-view learning into the Adaboost learning framework and at the same time leverages the advantages of Co-training algorithm for performance enhancement. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of the convergence rate, the accuracy, and the steady performance as compared to the original AdaBoost algorithm, without relying on redundant and sufficient feature sets. As a algorithm application in software engineering, the Embedded Co-AdaBoost has been applied to the classification of software document relations to improve the quality of the architecture design documents and the reusability of design knowledge.

In some learning approach problems, the learning algorithm receives training and test samples drawn according to the same distribution. However, this assumption is not available in practice. In face super-resolution, when the training sample available is biased, it may affect quality of the construction face. In this paper, we proposed a novel method to correct the bias of sample selection in training dataset. First, Active Shape Model is used to get the face shape vectors which contain some information about face contour. Then all faces from Chinese face dataset are classified into certain categories based on Hausdor ff Distance by k-means clustering. We correct the sample bias by selecting the most similar faces due to the face shape similarity between samples and test images. Last, the global face reconstruction method based on eigen face is used to achieve satisfied image quality with selected train dataset. Experiments show that the face super-resolution algorithm based on sample selection bias correction can improve the subjective and objective quality of the input low resolution face images compared to traditional eigenface algorithm.

Lesion segmentation plays an important role in medical image processing and analysis. There exist several successful dynamic programming (DP) based segmentation methods for general images. In those methods, the gradient is used as an important factor in the cost function to attract the contours to the boundaries. Since medical images have their characteristics such as low contrast, blurred edges and high noises, the gradient operator cannot work well enough to achieve a satisfactory performance for boundary detection. We define the local intra-class variance and combine it with the dynamic programming method to replace the traditional gradient operation. Experiments on synthetic and X-ray images are carried out and the results are compared with Canny and fast multilevel fuzzy edge detection (FMFED) algorithms. It is demonstrated that the proposed method performs better on medical images with low contrast, blurred edges and high noises. In addition, 483 regions of interest of mammograms randomly extracted from DDSM of the University of South Florida are used to compare our proposed method with the plane-fitting and dynamic programming method (PFDP), and the normalized cut segmentation method (Ncut). The results demonstrate that our method is more accurate and robust than PFDP and Ncut. © 2012 ACM.

This paper aims to propose a practical set of features for representing the visual speech of Chinese phonemes. The state and hence visibility of teeth and tongue play important roles in pronunciation, but discriminating them in images or video is tricky. This paper introduces the concept of inner appearance features based on structural analysis. Our experiment results show preliminary evidence that describing the pixel distribution of the upper and lower inner mouth separately can improve the ability to discriminate useful facial features as well as individual phonemes. The Chinese phonemes defined in the SAPI Speech Interface generally corresponding to one character or morpheme, and our dynamic feature is proposed based on the traditional division of these syllabic phonemes into a consonant-like onset and a vowel-and/or nasal-like coda. Features are established by combining a series of frames and identifying the most salient change frame as the key frame to avoid provide an objective framework for phoneme onset recognition. Our work provides a basis for bimodal AudioVisual Chinese speech recognition as well as unimodal Visual speech reading, but is also targeted to AudioVisual speaking face/talking head synthesis. 1548-7741/Copyright © 2012 Binary Information Press.

This paper describes the development of a course in Programming Concepts over a period of a decade. Initially we present educational principles that underlie the approach, as well as specific and generic aims for this course. We then proceed to show how an integrated program of assessment and instruction has allowed teaching and comparison of multiple programming paradigms and concepts within a common framework. The specifiation of specific and generic skills and the extents to which they are expected to be covered has been closely validated with surveys framed around them. We also address some general issues in modern education.

Facing the requirement of the virtual pedagogy application to have the ability of evaluating English learners' pronunciation quality, the paper proposes an automatic assessment method based on a bimodal fusion decision algorithm. The pronunciation level is scored by comparing the similarity between learner and standard's audio and video speech signals separately. The final score of the learner's pronunciation is gotten by fusing the above scores with the linear weighting combination approach. Referring to the knowledge that the visual speech can aid the audio to improve the human perception especially under noisy environments, the paper proposes a noise adaptive weighting strategy in fusing process. To solve the problem of disagreement of speech length due to the various speaking speed, the paper adopts the dynamic warping algorithm to do the time alignment between the test speeches and the standard ones. The data selected from the Australia audio and visual speech corpus (AVOZES) is employed to test the performance of our automatic evaluating system. The experiment result shows that audio and visual speech fusion approach improves the rationality of automatic pronunciation accessing system by making full use of correlative and complementary information between acoustic and visual speech comparing to the audio-speech-only evaluation results.

Most existing works on sensor coverage mainly concentrate on the full coverage models which ensure that all points in the deployment region are covered at the expense of high complexity and cost. In contrast, the exposure-path prevention does not require full coverage sensor deployment, and instead it only needs the partial coverage, because the exposure paths are prevented as long as no moving objects or phenomena can go through a deployment region without being detected. Towards this end, we focus on the partial coverage by applying the percolation theory to solve the exposure path problem for wireless sensor networks. Specifically, we propose a bond-percolation based scheme by mapping the exposure path problem into a bond percolation model. Using this model, we derive the analytical expressions of critical densities for wireless sensor networks under random sensor deployment.
