This paper describes the development of a course in Programming Concepts over a period of a decade. Initially we present educational principles that underlie the approach, as well as specific and generic aims for this course. We then proceed to show how an integrated program of assessment and instruction has allowed teaching and comparison of multiple programming paradigms and concepts within a common framework. The specifiation of specific and generic skills and the extents to which they are expected to be covered has been closely validated with surveys framed around them. We also address some general issues in modern education.

Facing the requirement of the virtual pedagogy application to have the ability of evaluating English learners' pronunciation quality, the paper proposes an automatic assessment method based on a bimodal fusion decision algorithm. The pronunciation level is scored by comparing the similarity between learner and standard's audio and video speech signals separately. The final score of the learner's pronunciation is gotten by fusing the above scores with the linear weighting combination approach. Referring to the knowledge that the visual speech can aid the audio to improve the human perception especially under noisy environments, the paper proposes a noise adaptive weighting strategy in fusing process. To solve the problem of disagreement of speech length due to the various speaking speed, the paper adopts the dynamic warping algorithm to do the time alignment between the test speeches and the standard ones. The data selected from the Australia audio and visual speech corpus (AVOZES) is employed to test the performance of our automatic evaluating system. The experiment result shows that audio and visual speech fusion approach improves the rationality of automatic pronunciation accessing system by making full use of correlative and complementary information between acoustic and visual speech comparing to the audio-speech-only evaluation results.

Most existing works on sensor coverage mainly concentrate on the full coverage models which ensure that all points in the deployment region are covered at the expense of high complexity and cost. In contrast, the exposure-path prevention does not require full coverage sensor deployment, and instead it only needs the partial coverage, because the exposure paths are prevented as long as no moving objects or phenomena can go through a deployment region without being detected. Towards this end, we focus on the partial coverage by applying the percolation theory to solve the exposure path problem for wireless sensor networks. Specifically, we propose a bond-percolation based scheme by mapping the exposure path problem into a bond percolation model. Using this model, we derive the analytical expressions of critical densities for wireless sensor networks under random sensor deployment.

This paper is aimed at the problem of Multifocus image fusion for the same scene and has proposed a multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on NSCT [1]（The Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform）.NSCT is the sparse representation of a two-dimension piecewise smooth signals,not only satisfying the anisotropic scaling relation and having the multi-scale,multidirectional characteristics,and shift invariance,but also being able to accurately capture the image information of the contour feature and texture *** proposed algorithm,NSCT transform is first used to decompose source images at each scale and direction to get lowpass sub-band coefficients and band-pass directional sub-band ***,the fusion rule of weighted box-counting dimension is adopted in low-pass subband,as well as the fusion rule of local space frequency in band-pass directional ***,the NSCT inverse transform is employed to get the fused *** check experiment,our algorithm is proved to be simple and effective.

Using insights from biological processes could help to design new optimization techniques for long-standing computational problems. This paper exploits a cellular computing model in the slime mold physarum polycephalum to solve the minimal exposure path problem which is a fundamental problem corresponding to the worst-case coverage in wireless sensor networks. We first formulate the minimal exposure path problem, and then convert it into the shortest path problem by discretizing the monitoring field to a large-scale weighted grid. Inspired by the path-finding capability of physarum, we develop a new optimization algorithm, named as the physarum optimization, for solving the shortest path problem. Our proposed algorithm is with low-complexity and high-parallelism. Moreover, the core mechanism of our physarum optimization is also helpful for designing new graph algorithms and improving routing protocols and topology control in self-organized networks.

With rapid improvements and miniaturization in hardware, sensor nodes equipped with acoustic and visual information collection modules promise an unprecedented opportunity for target surveillance applications. This paper investigates a critical task of target surveillance, multi-class classification, in distributed multimedia sensor networks. We first analyze the procedure of target classification utilizing the acoustic and visual information. Then, we propose a binary classification tree based framework for distributed target classification in multimedia sensor networks. The proposed framework includes three main components: Generation of binary classification tree, Division of binary classification tree, and Selection of multimedia sensor nodes. Finally, we conduct an experimental application of target classification and extensive simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed framework and related schemes.

The common personalized searching technology can neither make full use of features of domain knowledge,nor understand the user's special needs in this *** at solving this issue,this paper studies personalized searching technology combining the characteristics of *** tourism fields,this paper designs and realizes a user-based personalized searching system,and provides with its general framework and implementation of system *** tourism field knowledge database is firstly *** to the user's browsing history and personal information,this paper builds the user-interest model based on tourism areas,and then realizes the personalized information recommendation technology and information expanding *** results show that the information searching based on domain knowledge and tourism information achieves better results in recall rate,accuracy and recommend function than traditional searching engine.

Open and dynamic Internet environment increased the uncertainty of composition service selection and user's weight expressed by pair-wise comparison matrix is closer to user's habits. To solve the above difficulties, this paper presents a novel hybrid QoS model supporting real numbers, interval numbers, triangular fuzzy numbers and intuitionistic fuzzy numbers, a strategy for aggregating composition service QoS and a user weight model expressed by pair-wise comparison matrix firstly. Furthermore, Web service composition algorithm based on AHP and TOPSIS (WSCA AT) is presented, which includes five main steps: calculating user's weight, converting hybrid QoS into intervals, weighting normalized decisionmatrix, determining the positive and negative ideal solutions and calculating the closedegrees of candidates. Finally, some experiments demonstrate the benefits and effectiveness of our approach. © 2012 Binary Information Press January 2012.

To solve the problem of seriously distortion while enlarging images via seam carving,we proposed an improved method in this ***,we enlarged the image with hierarchical interpolation model to the size of power of two times of original,which is closest to target size,while applying iterative curvature-based interpolation algorithm to protected areas and nearest interpolation to non-protected *** then,some seams to the target size were avoided via seam carving *** the subjective analysis and objective evaluation,the experiment on both standard library images and spatial images showed that the proposed method gave satisfactory results.

In this paper, based on the projection twin support vector machine (PTSVM), a novel matrix pattern based method (MPPTSVM) is presented by introducing the matrix pattern based within-class scatter matrix into PTSVM and constructing matrix pattern based constraints. MPPTSVM, in contrast to PTSVM, theoretically solves the singularity problem of within-class scatter matrix in the small samples size case, efficiently reduces the space complexity of storing the within-class scatter matrixes and weight vectors, and can directly operate on matrix patterns such as image data. We discuss in the paper the linear case and the nonlinear case of the MPPTSVM. Experimental results on real datasets indicate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
