Target tracking and localization are important applications in camera sensor networks. Although coverage is a very important research topic in wireless sensor networks, and the coverage problem for target detection has been intensively studied, few considers the coverage problem from the perspective of target localization. In this paper, we investigate the coverage problem from the perspective of target localization for camera sensor networks. We first propose a novel localization-oriented sensing model based on the perspective projection of camera. Then, we propose a new notion of Localization-oriented coverage (L-coverage for short). We assume that all camera sensors make the measurements independent of other in the field, and these camera sensors can cooperate to make an accurate estimation for the location of the target. In addition, the relationships among L-coverage, 2-coverage, and the density of camera sensors are also discussed in this paper. The obtained results show that our model can be effectively deployed in many practical scenarios. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose an autonomic management framework (ASGrid) to address the requirements of emerging large-scale applications in hybrid grid and sensor network systems. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first who proposed the autonomic sensor grid system concept in a holistic manner targeted at non-trivial large applications. To bridge the gap between the physical world and the digital world and facilitate information analysis and decision making, ASGrid is designed to smooth the integration of sensor networks and grid systems and efficiently use both on demand. Under the blueprint of ASGrid, we present several building blocks that fulfill the following major features: (1) Self-configuration through content-based aggregation and associative rendezvous mechanisms; (2) Self-optimization through utility-based sensor selection and model-driven hierarchical sensing task scheduling; (3) Self-protection through ActiveKey dynamic key management and S3Trust trust management mechanisms. Experimental and simulation results on these aspects are presented.

Large-scale computing environments, such as TeraGrid, Distributed ASCI Supercomputer (DAS), and Gridpsila5000, have been using resource co-allocation to execute applications on multiple sites. Their schedulers work with requests that contain imprecise estimations provided by users. This lack of accuracy generates fragments inside the scheduling queues that can be filled by rescheduling both local and multi-site requests. Current resource co-allocation solutions rely on advance reservations to ensure that users can access all the resources at the same time. These coallocation requests cannot be rescheduled if they are based on rigid advance reservations. In this work, we investigate the impact of rescheduling co-allocation requests based on flexible advance reservations and processor remapping. The metascheduler can modify the start time of each job component and remap the number of processors they use in each site. The experimental results show that local jobs may not fill all the fragments in the scheduling queues and hence rescheduling co-allocation requests reduces response time of both local and multi-site jobs. Moreover, we have observed in some scenarios that processor remapping increases the chances of placing the tasks of multi-site jobs into a single cluster, thus eliminating the inter-cluster network overhead.

As users increasingly require better quality of service from grids, resource management and scheduling mechanisms have to evolve in order to satisfy competing demands on limited resources. Traditional schedulers for grids are system centric and favour system performance over increasing userpsilas utility. On the other hand market oriented schedulers are price-based systems that favour users but are based solely on user valuations. This paper proposes a novel meta-scheduler that unifies the advantages of both the systems for benefiting both users and resources. In order to do that, we design a valuation metric for userpsilas applications and computational resources based on multi-criteria requirements of users and resource load. The meta-scheduler maps user applications to suitable distributed resources using a continuous double auction (CDA). Through simulation, we compare our scheduling mechanism against other common mechanisms used by current meta-schedulers. The results show that our meta-scheduler mechanism can satisfy more users than the others while still meeting traditional system-centric performance criteria such as average load and deadline of applications.

Emerging deadline-driven Grid applications require a numberof computing resources to be available over a time frame, startingat a specific time in the future. To enable these applications, it is importantto predict the resource availability and utilise this informationduring provisioning because it affects their performance. It is impracticalto request the availability information upon the scheduling of everyjob due to communication overhead. However, existing work has notconsidered how the precision of availability information influences theprovisioning. As a result, limitations exist in developing advanced resourceprovisioning and scheduling mechanisms. This work investigateshow the precision of availability information affects resource provisioningin multiple site environments. Performance evaluation is conductedconsidering both multiple scheduling policies in resource providers andmultiple provisioning policies in brokers, while varying the precision ofavailability information. Experimental results show that it is possible toavoid requesting availability information for every Grid job scheduledthus reducing the communication overhead. They also demonstrate thatmultiple resource partition policies improve the slowdown of Grid jobs.

Recent advances in microarray technology allow scientists to measure expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously in human tissue samples. This technology has been increasingly used in cancer research because of its potential for classification of the tissue samples based only on gene expression levels. A major problem in these microarray data is that the number of genes greatly exceeds the number of tissue samples. Moreover, these data have a noisy nature. It has been shown from literature review that selecting a small subset of informative genes can lead to an improved classification accuracy. Thus, this paper aims to select a small subset of informative genes that is most relevant for the cancer classification. To achieve this aim, an approach using two hybrid methods has been proposed. This approach is assessed on two well-known microarray data. The experimental results have shown that the gene subsets are very small in size and yield better classification accuracy as compared with other previous works as well as four methods experimented in this work. In addition, a list of informative genes in the best subsets is also presented for biological usage.

This keynote paper: presents a 21 st century vision of computing; identifies various computing paradigms promising to deliver the vision of computing utilities; defines Cloud computing and provides the architecture for creating market-oriented Clouds by leveraging technologies such as VMs; provides thoughts on market-based resource management strategies that encompass both customer-driven service management and computational risk management to sustain SLA-oriented resource allocation; presents some representative Cloud platforms especially those developed in industries along with our current work towards realising market-oriented resource allocation of Clouds by leveraging the 3rd generation Aneka enterprise Grid technology; reveals our early thoughts on interconnecting Clouds for dynamically creating an atmospheric computing environment along with pointers to future community research; and concludes with the need for convergence of competing IT paradigms for delivering our 21 st century vision.

The user-level brokers in grids consider individual application QoS requirements and minimize their cost without considering demands from other users. This results in contention for resources and sub-optimal schedules. Meta-scheduling in grids aims to address this scheduling problem, which is NP hard due to its combinatorial nature. Thus, many heuristic-based solutions using genetic algorithm (GA) have been proposed, apart from traditional algorithms such as greedy and FCFS. We propose a Linear Programming/Integer Programming model (LP/IP) for scheduling these applications to multiple resources. We also propose a novel algorithm LPGA (linear programming driven genetic algorithm) which combines the capabilities of LP and GA. The aim of this algorithm is to obtain the best meta-schedule for utility grids which minimize combined cost of all users in a coordinated manner. Simulation results show that our proposed integrated algorithm offers the best schedule having the minimum processing cost with negligible time overheard.

Service level agreements (SLAs) between grid users and providers have been proposed as mechanisms for ensuring that the users' quality of service (QoS) requirements are met, and that the provider is able to realise utility from its infrastructure. This paper presents a bilateral protocol for SLA negotiation using the alternate offers mechanism wherein a party is able to respond to an offer by modifying some of its terms to generate a counter offer. We apply this protocol to the negotiation between a resource broker and a provider for advance reservation of compute nodes, and implement and evaluate it on a real grid system.

Summary form only given. Grids and peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have emerged as popular platforms for the next generation parallel and distributed computing. In these environments, resources are geographically distributed, managed and owned by various organizations with different policies, and interconnected by wide-area networks or the Internet. This introduces a number of resource management and application scheduling challenges in the domain of security, resource and policy heterogeneity, fault tolerance, and dynamic resource conditions. In these dynamic distributed computing environments, it is hard and challenging to carry out resource management design studies in a repeatable and controlled manner as resources and users are autonomous and distributed across multiple organizations with their own policies. Therefore, simulations have emerged as the most feasible technique for analyzing policies for resource allocation. This paper presents emerging trends in distributed computing and their promises for revolutionizing the computing field, and identifies distinct characteristics and challenges in building them. We motivate opportunities for modeling and simulation communities and present our discrete-event grid simulation toolkit, called GridSim, used by researchers world-wide for investigating the design of utility-oriented computing systems such as data centers and grids. We present various case studies on the use of GridSim in modeling and simulation of business grids, parallel applications scheduling, workflow scheduling, and service pricing and revenue management.
