A geometric optimization based approach to deploy a mobile sensor network for the purpose of detecting and capturing mobile targets in the plane is presented in [1]. The sensing-pursuit problem is motivated by the Marco polo game, in which the pursuer Marco must capture multiple mobile targets that are sensed intermittently, and with very limited information. In this paper we extend the results in [1] by providing (i) a complexity analysis of the proposed cell decomposition planning algorithm, and (ii) a testbed that allows to experimentally verify the applicability of the proposed pursuit methodology.

We model the sum and product riddle in public announcement logic, which is interpreted on an epistemic Kripke model. The model is symbolically represented as a finite state program with n agents. A model checking method to the riddle is developed by using the BDD-based symbolic model checking algorithm for logic of knowledge we developed in [7]. The method is implemented by extending the model checker MCTK [7] and then the solution of the riddle is verified successfully.

This paper is concerned with prototype development and motion control of a dolphin-like underwater robot. The propulsion and maneuvering of the robotic dolphin are realized with the flapping motion of the mechanical flippers and the combined heaving and pitching motions of the fluke. Mechanical design and control of the flipper apparatus and the flexible tail mechanism are presented. Through coordinated control of the propulsors, several swimming movements are designed. Preliminary experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design scheme.

A new hybrid algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO), evolutionary algorithm (EA), and differential evolution (DE) is presented for training a recurrent neural network (RNN) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel prediction. The hybrid algorithm is shown to be superior in performance to PSO and differential evolution PSO (DEPSO) for different channel environments. The received signal-to-noise ratio is derived for un-coded and beam-forming MIMO systems to see how the RNN error affects the performance. This error is shown to deteriorate the accuracy of the weak singular modes, making beam-forming more desirable. Bit error rate simulations are performed to validate these results.

In this paper, we propose the basic framework of point- wise topological logic on completely distributive lattices and explore approximate reasoning in it. The logic of this paper is based on pointwise characterization, therefore the pointwise conception is pervasive. We explore approximate reasoning in abstract logical framework Fl on completely distributive lattice L. We propose the structure of point- wise topological logic F TL , the structure of matching function sigma. and the structure of matching neighborhood group. We investigate approximate reasoning in pointwise topological logic F TL with matching function sigma, develop pointwise topological algorithm of simple approximate reasoning, introduce the essential characteristics of this scheme.

Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device which is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, these power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which causes the degradation of the entire system performance. This paper presents the application of DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulsed loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial immune system (AIS) is proposed. The optimal parameters of the controller are first found using particle swarm optimization. This provides a sort of innate immunity to common system disturbances. For unusual system disturbances, these optimal parameters are modified online, thus providing adaptive immunity in the control system. To evaluate the performance of the DSTATCOM and the AIS adaptive controller, a ship power system is developed in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The effectiveness of the DSTATCOM and the AIS controller is examined for pulsed loads of different magnitudes and durations.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. A Grid based e-Research platform is being developed for providing a simulation-based virtual reality environment for clinical management and therapy treatment. The development of this platform involves cross-disciplinary experts aiming at combining the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into clinical management system. These fluid dynamic studies support the physician and surgeon with recommendations for the possible range of treatment and operation techniques. The platform will consist of a cluster of computing nodes, a middleware (Grid management layer), internet accessible tomography data and CFD analysis tools, and a tailored graphical user interface (GUI) application for various experts. In future, this platform will provide the novel creation of a prototype virtual reality model environment that links each technical modular consisting of a consolidation system with flexible interface model for exchanging data efficiently. Furthermore, besides allowing expeditious sharing of data and analytical tools, it will also furnish a foundation for cross-disciplinary collaboration and will definitely foster further advancement of related biomechanics researches. © 2007, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Increasingly, software must adapt its behavior in response to changes in the supporting computing, communication infrastructure, and in the surrounding physical environment. Since most existing software was not designed to adapt, research on techniques to make legacy software dynamically adaptive has gained increasing interest. Assurance is crucial for adaptive software to fulfill its intended purpose. Correctness is even more critical if it is to be applied in high assurance systems. This paper proposes a model-driven approach to introduce dynamic adaptation to non-adaptive legacy systems while maintaining assurance properties. An aspect-oriented technique is applied to achieve separation of concerns in the implementation. © 2007 IEEE.

Existing item bank systems present a variety of assessments for data management and integration with individual learning evaluation systems. However, as the data in these established item bank systems do not include semantics, the bank systems cannot analyze implications and perform accurate searches such as for synonymous words. Therefore, both learners and teachers can access only simple text data using the item bank system and often waste time checking unnecessary search results and extracting information from data repeatedly. Moreover, since there is no clear definition of the relationship between items and teachers or learners, or between data and units, it is difficult to use and share extra-item information. In order to solve these problems, this research describes the definition of conception and organization by constructing the Ontology of an E-Item Bank system using OWL, which is a form of semantic web technology. Furthermore, on the basis of Ontology, OWL metadata, individuals, are built, semantic factors are then extracted using OWLJessKB. We do not only use this extracted semantic factors as a fact, but also domain rules using SWRL for the JESS inferencing engine. As such, it is possible to make inferences and provide reasoning in web data structures. As a result, it is possible to combine all the data of the E-Item bank system and facilitate understanding of the meanings of concepts by the computer. In addition, a search service with inference can be applied to education and can lead to cooperative study between teachers and students.
