Solution concepts help designing co-evolutionary algorithms by interfacing search mechanisms and problems. This work analyses co-evolutionary dynamics by coupling the notion of solution concept with a Markov chain model of co-evolution. It is shown that once stationarity has been reached by the Markov chain, and given a particular solution concept of interest, the dynamics can be seen as a Bernoulli process describing how the algorithm visits solution and non-solution sets. A particular analysis is presented using the iterated prisoner's dilemma. By numerically computing the Markov chain transition matrices and stationary distributions, a complex and strong relation between variation and selection is observed.

Data replication is one of the key components in data grid architecture as it enhances data access and reliability and minimises the cost of data transmission. In this paper, we address the problem of reducing the overheads of the replication mechanisms that drive the data management components of a data grid. We propose an approach that extends the resource broker with policies that factor in user quality of service as well as service costs when replicating and transferring data. A realistic model of the data grid was created to simulate and explore the performance of the proposed policy. The policy displayed an effective means of improving the performance of the grid network traffic and is indicated by the improvement of speed and cost of transfers by brokers.

In this paper, we address the general problem of learning from both labeled and unlabeled data. Based on the reasonable assumption that the label of each data can be linearly reconstructed from its neighbors’ labels, we develop a novel approach, called Linear Neighborhood Propagation (LNP), to learn the linear construction weights and predict the labels of the unlabeled data from the labeled data. The main procedure is composed of two steps: (1) it computes the local neighborhood geometry according to the image information by solving a constrained least squares problem, (2) the obtained geometry will be used to predict the labels of unlabeled data by solving a linearly constrained quadratic optimization problem. LNP has at least three characteristics. Firstly, it is much practical in that only one free parameter, the size of neighborhood, requires user-tuning. Secondly it can be easily extended to out-of-sample examples. Finally the labels achieved from LNP can be sufficiently smooth with respect to the intrinsic structure collectively revealed by the labeled and unlabeled points. Many promising experimental results, such as object recognition, data ranking and interactive image segmentation, demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

A hybrid model used to approximate hysteresis and creep nonlinear system is proposed. This model is constructed by a weighted superposition of both backlash operators and creep operators. Then, the corresponding inverse models for both hysteresis and creep are developed. The growing computational and storage needs of several scientific applications mandate the deployment of extreme-scale parallel machines, such as IBM's BlueGene/L which can accommodate as many as 128 K processors. One of the challenges when designing and deploying these systems in a production setting is the need to take failure occurrences, whether it be in the hardware or in the software, into account. Earlier work has shown that conventional runtime fault-tolerant techniques such as periodic checkpointing are not effective to the emerging systems. Instead, the ability to predict failure occurrences can help develop more effective checkpointing strategies. Failure prediction has long been regarded as a challenging research problem, mainly due to the lack of realistic failure data from actual production systems. In this study, we have collected RAS event logs from BlueGene/L over a period of more than 100 days. We have investigated the characteristics of fatal failure events, as well as the correlation between fatal events and non-fatal events. Based on the observations, we have developed three simple yet effective failure prediction methods, which can predict around 80% of the memory and network failures, and 47% of the application I/O failures

This paper addresses the need of semantic component in the grid environment to discover and describe the grid resources semantically. We propose semantic grid architecture by introducing a knowledge layer at the top of Gridbus broker architecture and thereby enabling broker to discover resources semantically. The semantic component in the knowledge layer enables semantic description of grid resources with the help of ontology template. The ontology template has been created using Protege-OWL editor for different types of computing resources in the grid environment. The Globus Toolkit's MDS is used to gather grid resource information and Protege-OWL libraries are used to dynamically create knowledge base of grid resources. Algernon inference engine is used for interacting with the knowledge base to discover suitable resources.

In this paper, we propose a personal verification method using both face and speech to improve the rate of single biometric verification. False acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR) have been a fundamental bottleneck of real-time personal verification. The proposed multimodal biometric method is to improve both verification rate and reliability in real-time by overcoming technical limitations of single biometric verification methods. The proposed method uses principal component analysis (PCA) for face recognition and hidden markov model (HMM) for speech recognition. It also uses fuzzy logic for the final decision of personal verification. Based on experimental results, the proposed system can reduce FAR down to 0.0001%, which provides that the proposed method overcomes the limitation of single biometric system and provides stable personal verification in real-time.

A modern security monitoring and alarm system consists of several coupled subsystems, including end devices, a gateway server and a workstation front end. Within the gateway server, event processing software must receive, parse, process, store and deliver protocol message events. This software should be modular, extensible, maintainable, compatible with various server implementations, and efficient with respect to memory and processing speed. This paper presents an overview of the design, implementation and testing of the event processing software for an intelligent monitoring and alarm system, developed using a rigorous Uniform Modeling Language (UML) approach. Initial testing indicates that this software meets the design goals for effective event processing and efficient memory usage.
