The human immune system can be seen as a complex network structure that is able to respond to an almost unlimited multitude of foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria. Hence, this parallel and distributed adaptive system promises tremendous potential in many intelligent computing applications, including Web mining. Some of these immunity-based techniques involve the development and analysis of algorithms that can identify patterns in observed data in order to make predictions about unseen data. In this paper, we introduce several new enhancements to deal with some of the weaknesses of previous artificial immune system models. In particular, we address the uncertainty and fuzziness inherent in the matching process that takes place between antibodies and antigens. This problem is handled by introducing a fuzzy artificial immune system. A fuzzy artificial immune system mimicking the body's adaptive learning and defense mechanism in the face of invading biological agents is used as a monitoring and learning system for a Web site in the face of all incoming Web requests.

We introduce an innovative approach to wrapping semi-structured web pages in order to generate structured data. Unlike other work in this area that is based on physically specifying the location of information, our approach is based on human design psychology that captures more stable features in web pages, which we believe renders a more robust result in coping with changes in the web pages. In this paper, we focus on the product advertisement domain, and a set of design psychology principles for product advertisement is presented and used to design the wrapping rules. A case study in the mobile phone advertisement domain is used to evaluate this approach.

An essential factor in understanding the motor learning capability of humans, is the coordinate transformation learning of the visual feedback controller. Although a number of learning models for the visual feedback controller have been proposed, none has been able to establish a definitive approach. In our previous work, we have suggested a learning model that uses disturbance noise and the feedback error signal to learn the human visual feedback controller's coordinate transformation. However, the model does not fully consider the time delay in the visual feedback control loop. This paper presents a modified learning model taking into account the time delay and the convergence properties of the model. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper describes an experimental study in the use of a composable proxy framework to improve the quality of interactive audio streams delivered to mobile hosts. Two forward error correction (FEC) proxylets are developed, one using block erasure codes, and the other using the GSM 06.10 encoding algorithm. Separately, each type of FEC improves the ability of the audio stream to tolerate errors in a wireless LAN environment. When composed in a single proxy, however, they cooperate to correct additional types of burst errors. Results are presented from a performance study conducted on a mobile computing testbed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This paper addresses issues faced by agents operating in large-scale multi-cultural environments. We argue for systems that are tolerant of heterogeneity. The discussion is illustrated with a running example of researching and comparing university web sites, which is a realistic scenario representative of many current knowledge management tasks that would benefit from agent assistance. We discuss efforts of the intelligent Agent laboratory toward designing such tolerant systems, giving a detailed presentation of the results of several implementations.

In order to satisfy, the complex and various demands of the customers, telecommunication networks must provide their services rapidly and flexibly, with the support of efficient service and network management systems. To fulfill these requirements, TINA has appeared as a concept for the advanced telecommunication system using information technology such as distributed processing, object oriented modeling. We mention some problems of developing applications in the TINA service management layer. To solve the problems, we propose the advanced architecture called OMS (object management system), which consists of three managers (data manager, data access manager and metadata registry manager). OMS separates the application layer and the middleware such as ODBC and JDBC. And the application layer and OMS are connected by distributed object middleware based on CORBA. Also in order to manage efficiently managed objects stored in different repositories, we have implemented metadata registry by using the metadata concept.

This paper reports on an ongoing research project aimed at designing and deploying a COMA Commodity Grid (COG) Kit. The overall goal of this project is to explore how commodity distributed computing technologies and state-of-the-art software engineering practices can be used for the development of advanced Grid applications. As part of this activity, we are investigating how CORBA can be integrated with the existing Grid infrastructure. In this paper, we present the design of a CORBA Commodity Grid Kit that provides a software development framework for building a CORBA "Grid domain." We then present our experiences in developing a prototype CORBA COG Kit that supports the development and deployment of CORBA applications on the Grid by providing them access to the Grid services provided by the Globus toolkit. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Agent based computing offers the ability to decentralize computing solutions by incorporating autonomy and intelligence into cooperating, distributed applications. It provides an effective medium for expressing solutions to problems that involve interaction with real-world environments and allows modelling of the world state and its dynamics. This model can be then used to determine how candidate actions affect the world and how to choose the best from a set of actions. Most agent paradigms overlook real-time requirements and computing resource constraints. We discuss the application of agent based computing to RoboCup and examine methods to improve it. In particular, we discuss the incorporation of a meta-level reasoning mechanism that handles individual agent organization, plan generation, task allocation, integration and plan execution. We also propose an architecture where a meta-agent is further enhanced by combining it with system-level resource allocation and optimization. The approach adopted by us unifies agent based computing with adaptive resource management for dynamic real-time systems. The goal is to build and implement a distributed, intelligent, agent based system for dynamic real-time applications.

Inverse kinematics computation using an artificial neural network that learns the inverse kinematics of a robot arm has been employed by many researchers. However, the inverse kinematics system of typical robot arms with joint limits is a multivalued and discontinuous function. Since it is difficult for a well-known multilayer neural network to approximate such a function, a correct inverse kinematics model cannot be obtained by using a single neural network. In order to overcome the discontinuity of the inverse kinematics function, we proposed a novel modular neural network system that consists of a number of expert neural networks. Each expert approximates the continuous part of the inverse kinematics function. The proposed system uses the forward kinematics model for selection of experts. When the number of the experts increases, the computation time for calculating the inverse kinematics solution also increases without using the parallel computing system. In order to reduce the computation time, we propose a novel expert selection by using the performance prediction networks which directly calculate the performances of the experts.
