We present AircraftVerse, a publicly available aerial vehicle design dataset. Aircraft design encompasses different physics domains and, hence, multiple modalities of representation. The evaluation of these cyber-physical system (CPS) designs requires the use of scientific analytical and simulation models ranging from computer- aided design tools for structural and manufacturing analysis, computational fluid dynamics tools for drag and lift computation, battery models for energy estimation, and simulation models for flight control and dynamics. AircraftVerse contains 27,714 diverse air vehicle designs - the largest corpus of engineering designs with this level of complexity. Each design comprises the following artifacts: a symbolic design tree describing topology, propulsion subsystem, battery subsystem, and other design details; a STandard for the Exchange of Product (STEP) model data; a 3D CAD design using a stereolithography (STL) file format; a 3D point cloud for the shape of the design; and evaluation results from high fidelity state-of-the-art physics models that characterize performance metrics such as maximum flight distance and hover-time. We also present baseline surrogate models that use different modalities of design representation to predict design performance metrics, which we provide as part of our dataset release. Finally, we discuss the potential impact of this dataset on the use of learning in aircraft design and, more generally, in CPS. AircraftVerse is accompanied by a data card, and it is released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license. This article introduces three-filters-to-normal+ (3F2N+), an extension of our previous work three-filters-to-normal (3F2N), with a specific focus on incorporating discontinuity discrimination capability into surface normal estimators (SNEs). 3F2N+ achieves this capability by utilizing a novel discontinuity discrimination module (DDM), which combines depth curvature minimization and correlation coefficient maximization through conditional random fields (CRFs). To evaluate the robustness of SNEs on noisy data, we create a large-scale synthetic surface normal (SSN) dataset containing 20 scenarios (ten indoor scenarios and ten outdoor scenarios with and without random Gaussian noise added to depth images). Extensive experiments demonstrate that 3F2N+ achieves greater performance than all other geometry-based surface normal estimators, with average angular errors of 7.85◦, 8.95◦, 9.25◦, and 11.98◦ on the clean-indoor, clean-outdoor, noisy-indoor, and noisy-outdoor datasets, respectively. We conduct three additional experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of incorporating our proposed 3F2N+ into downstream robot perception tasks, including freespace detection, 6D object pose estimation, and point cloud completion. While geometry-based surface normal estimators have been widely used in these domains, the existing solutions focus merely on discontinuity discrimination. Efficient detection of oil spills is critical for minimizing environmental damage. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing deep learning, specifically the YOLOv8 architecture, augmented with advanced computer vision techniques for oil spill detection. Through meticulous dataset curation and model training, the YOLOv8 model achieved an impressive overall accuracy (R-score) of 0.531 and a Mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.549. Performance varied across different spill types, with the model demonstrating notable accuracy in distinguishing between oil spills and natural features, achieving precision and recall rates of up to 0.75 and 0.68, respectively, for sheen detection. Visualizations such as box loss, class loss, and confusion matrices provide insights into the model’s performance dynamics, revealing a steady decrease in losses and an improvement in accuracy over epochs. In this dataset, the measurements are drone measurements performed by Port of Antwerp Bruges. Furthermore, practical applications showcase the model’s versatility in detecting various oil spill types in both image and video data, affirming its potential for real-world deployment in environmental monitoring and disaster response scenarios. This research represents a significant stride towards more effective oil spill detection, contributing to environmental sustainability and resilience efforts. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Surrogate models, which have become an effective and popular method to close loop reservoir management problems, use a data-driven approach to predict dynamic injection and production wells parameters and optimize waterflooding development. In this study, a deep learning-based surrogate model method is proposed to estimate bottomhole pressure (BHP) of production wells in waterflooding reservoirs. Bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network, as an efficient deep learning approach, is applied to BHP estimation using fluctuation data. Extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test (EFAST) method is employed to analyse the influence of different input factors on BHP dynamics, and a reduced dataset is rebuilt to predict BHP parameter based on BiLSTM-EFAST algorithm. The estimation results are tested on a dataset from Volve oilfield in North Sea, and compared with other deep learning methods. The test results indicate that the proposed method can achieve higher prediction accuracy. A reduced dataset-based approach provides a new attempt to reduce model complexity and improve calculation speed for big data-driven surrogate model in oil and gas industry. © 2023 IEEE.

Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) introduces intermediate aggregation layers, addressing the limitations of conventional Federated Learning (FL) in geographically dispersed environments with limited communication infrastructure. An application of HFL is in smart IoT systems, such as remote monitoring, disaster response, and battlefield operations, where cellular connectivity is often unreliable or unavailable. In these scenarios, UAVs serve as mobile aggregators, providing connectivity to the terrestrial IoT devices. This paper studies an HFL architecture for energy-constrained UAVs in smart IoT systems, pioneering a solution to minimize global training cost increased caused by UAV disconnection. In light of this, we formulate a joint optimization problem involving learning configuration, bandwidth allocation, and device-to-UAV association, and perform global aggregation in time before UAV drops disconnect and redeployment of UAVs. The problem explicitly accounts for the dynamic nature of IoT devices and their interruptible communications and is unveiled to be NP-hard. To address this, we decompose it into three subproblems. First, we optimize the learning configuration and bandwidth allocation using an augmented Lagrangian function to reduce training costs. Second, we propose a device fitness score, integrating data heterogeneity (via Kullback-Leibler divergence), device-to-UAV distances, and IoT device resources, and develop a twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3)-based algorithm for dynamic device-to-UAV assignment. Third, We introduce a low-complexity two-stage greedy strategy for finding the location of UAVs redeployment and selecting the appropriate global aggregator UAV. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate significant cost reductions and robust performance under communication interruptions. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Integer programming problems (IPs) are challenging to be solved efficiently due to the NP-hardness, especially for large-scale IPs. To solve this type of IPs, Large neighborhood search (LNS) uses an initial feasible solution and iteratively improves it by searching a large neighborhood around the current solution. However, LNS easily steps into local optima and ignores the correlation between variables to be optimized, leading to compromised performance. This paper presents a general adaptive constraint partition-based optimization framework (ACP) for large-scale IPs that can efficiently use any existing optimization solver as a subroutine. Specifically, ACP first randomly partitions the constraints into blocks, where the number of blocks is adaptively adjusted to avoid local optima. Then, ACP uses a subroutine solver to optimize the decision variables in a randomly selected block of constraints to enhance the variable correlation. ACP is compared with LNS framework with different subroutine solvers on four IPs and a real-world IP. The experimental results demonstrate that in specified wall-clock time ACP shows better performance than SCIP and Gurobi. DSDFormer: An Innovative Transformer-Mamba Framework for Robust High-Precision Driver Distraction Identification

Driver distraction remains a leading cause of traffic accidents, posing a critical threat to road safety globally. As intelligent transportation systems evolve, accurate and real-time identification of driver distraction has become essential. However, existing methods struggle to capture both global contextual and fine-grained local features while contending with noisy labels in training datasets. To address these challenges, we propose DSDFormer, a novel framework that integrates the strengths of Transformer and Mamba architectures through a Dual State Domain Attention (DSDA) mechanism, enabling a balance between long-range dependencies and detailed feature extraction for robust driver behavior recognition. Additionally, we introduce Temporal Reasoning Confident Learning (TRCL), an unsupervised approach that refines noisy labels by leveraging spatiotemporal correlations in video sequences. Our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on the AUC-V1, AUC-V2, and 100-Driver datasets and demonstrates real-time processing efficiency on the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin platform. Extensive experimental results confirm that DSDFormer and TRCL significantly improve both the accuracy and robustness of driver distraction detection, offering a scalable solution to enhance road safety. Correspondence matching plays a crucial role in numerous robotics applications. In comparison to conventional hand-crafted methods and recent data-driven approaches, there is significant interest in plug-and-play algorithms that make full use of pre-trained backbone networks for multi-scale feature extraction and leverage hierarchical refinement strategies to generate matched correspondences. The primary focus of this paper is to address the limitations of deep feature matching (DFM), a state-of-the-art (SoTA) plug-and-play correspondence matching approach. First, we eliminate the pre-defined threshold employed in the hierarchical refinement process of DFM by leveraging a more flexible nearest neighbor search strategy, thereby preventing the exclusion of repetitive yet valid matches during the early stages. Our second technical contribution is the integration of a patch descriptor, which extends the applicability of DFM to accommodate a wide range of backbone networks pre-trained across diverse computer vision tasks, including image classification, semantic segmentation, and stereo matching. Taking into account the practical applicability of our method in real-world robotics applications, we also propose a novel patch descriptor distillation strategy to further reduce the computational complexity of correspondence matching. Extensive experiments conducted on three public datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method. Specifically, it achieves an overall performance in terms of mean matching accuracy of 0.68, 0.92, and 0.95 with respect to the tolerances of 1, 3, and 5 pixels, respectively, on the HPatches dataset, outperforming all other SoTA algorithms. Pervasive sensing and wearable sensor techniques have been increasingly employed to monitor and recognize human activities through body sensors in areas of smart healthcare and manufacturing. However, conventional machine learning or deep learning based human activity recognition (HAR) requires a large amount of labeled data, which is cost-expensive in real-world scenarios. To tackle this issue, we propose a contrastive learning framework for HAR (CL-HAR), which utilizes the generated unlabeled data as the input and explores the supervised features of the unlabeled data under the principle of self-supervised learning. A simple yet effective backbone network as a feature extractor for subsequent activity recognition is proposed. By using a small portion of the labeled samples as the training set which is fed into our learned feature extractor, we build a classifier and use the rest of the data to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of our CL method. Extensive experiments on three benchamark datasets and one real-world dataset demonstrate that CL-HAR can achieve better classification accuracy than compared supervised and semi-supervised methods with less labelled samples, which is of practical use. © 2023 IEEE.
