The consideration of manufacturing expertise can improve both the quality and the speed of artifact design by helping to evaluate the ease with which an artifact can be manufactured. Most work in this area has addressed the detailed stage of the design process and has required precise CAD-like representations. To make. the most effective use of this expertise, however, design for efficacious manufacturing should also be a concern in the conceptual stage of the design process. This paper describes a computational approach that generates conceptual fabrication plans given a qualitative description of a design. This system contains expert-level knowledge from the composites manufacturing community and incorporates a comprehensive ontology into a framework for representing conceptual manufacturing plans. The Generic Task approach serves as the broad methodological foundation for these developments. Polymer composite structural elements of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are used to test this conceptual fabrication planning system. Copyright © 1999 by ASME.

There is a wealth of information to be mined from the World Wide Web. Unfortunately, standard natural language processing (NLP) extraction techniques perform poorly on the choppy, semi-structured information fragments, such as sports results, which are popular to be published on the Web pages nowadays. In this paper, we present an information agent: SportsFinder, an agent to extract sports scores from the World Wide Web, as well as the knowledge discovering method to learn new express patterns to improve the agent’s performance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Part-of-speech tagging in real-world applications is performed on text in domains which are different from the publicly available large training data sets. The two most successful part-of-speech taggers are trained on the Wall Street Journal corpus, a corpus of millions of words. We compare their performance on a test set from a different domain-astronomy-from documents that are available on the World Wide Web. The Maximum Entropy Part of Speech Tagger (MXPOST) and the Transformation-Based Learning Tagger are well-known and widely used in language research and development systems. The two taggers were tested in several modes: (1) after training on the Wall Street Journal corpus only, (2) after training on only a small body of text from our astronomy domain, (3) with and without an auxiliary lexicon derived from many astronomy-related Web documents, and (4) after incremental training-that is, having been trained on the Wall Street Journal, with additional training from the specific domain. One conclusion from the experiment is that different taggers exhibit different biases when trained on the same data. © 1999 IEEE.

Conceptual design is an early but important stage of the design process that greatly affects the quality and cost of the final design. intelligent tools that embody design rationale about function, structure, material, and manufacturing technology can help designers quickly generate and evaluate configuration ideas. This can help shorten the design cycle and reduce the risk of design failure in later stages. This paper presents a virtual prototyping system for redesigning metal structures out of polymer composites. The system provides a modeling tool to represent the original design based on a domain-specific ontology and a design transformation tool that generates, refines, and evaluates redesign concepts for composites. The discussion in this paper focuses on the system architecture that performs the design transformation problem solving. Important issues in the transformation strategies and control mechanisms are also addressed. An example of the redesign of a portion of an unmanned aerial vehicle is used to illustrate the redesign process throughout. Copyright © 1999 by ASME.

This report summarises and builds on the results of the "Directions and Methodologies for Empirical software engineering Research" group discussion. In particular, we considered the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to empirical software engineering research in light of the discussions and presentations during the workshop. The following sections describe each of these aspects of our discussion in turn. In addition, to finalise our discussion we agreed on a three-point plan for future work.

A legal knowledge based system called JUSTICE is presented which provides conceptual information retrieval for legal cases. JUSTICE can identify heterogeneous representations of concepts across all major Australian jurisdictions. The knowledge representation scheme used for legal and common sense concepts is inspired by human processes for the identification of concepts and the expected order and location of concepts. These are supported by flexible search functions and various string utilities. JUSTICE is a client-based legal software agent which works with both plaintext and HTML representations of legal cases over file systems, and the World Wide Web. In creating JUSTICE an ontology for legal cases was developed, and is implicit within JUSTICE. Further, the identification of concepts within data is shown to be a process enabling conceptual information retrieval and search, conceptualised summarisation, automated statistical analysis, and the conversion of informal documents into formalised semi-structured representations. JUSTICE was tested on the precision, recall and usefulness of its concept identifications; achieving good results. The results show the promise of the approach and establish JUSTICE as an intelligent legal research aid offering improved multifaceted access to the concepts within legal cases.

Repetitive, or multipass, processes are a class of 2D systems of both practical and algorithmic/theoretical interest whose dynamics cannot be analysed or controlled using standard (1D) systems theory. Recently it has been shown that the modelling of the boundary conditions, also known as the process initial conditions, is a crucial feature in the analysis and control of these processes. This paper presents some further results on the effects of so-called 'dynamic' process initial conditions on the controllability and stability properties of discrete linear repetitive processes. Previous work has shown that these dynamic process initial conditions alone can destroy the stability properties of these processes. Hence their effects must be 'adequately' accounted for the process modelling stage in order to ensure that subsequent analysis does not lead to incorrect results/conclusions. The main results developed in this paper can be summarised as follows. (i) Computationally efficient stability tests which can, in effect, be applied using standard, or 1D, linear systems tests. (ii) Characterisation of so-called pass controllability in the form of matrix rank based conditions. (iii) Conditions under which the dynamic process initial conditions can be selected to ensure stability and pass controllability. © 1999 IEEE.

A personalized search robot is developed as one major mechanism of a personalized software component retrieval system. This search robot automatically finds out the Web servers providing reusable software components, extracts needed software components from servers, classifies the extracted components, and finally establishes their indexing information for local component retrieval in the future. For adaptively tuning the performance of software component extraction and classification, an adaptive thesaurus and an adaptive classifier, realized by neuro-fuzzy models, are embedded in this search robot, and their learning algorithms are also developed. A prototype of the personalized software component retrieval system including the search robot has been implemented to confirm its validity and evaluate the performance. Furthermore, the framework of proposed personalized search robot could be extended to the search and classification of other kinds of Internet documents.

Traffic estimation is significant to ensure reliability and the utilization of network resources in the next generation Internet. However it is difficult to estimate network traffic with variable bit rates and bursty data flow. An adaptive approach based on a fuzzy clustering technique for traffic estimation in the resource protocol is proposed. The fuzzy clustering scheme is deployed to estimate traffic flows and predict the data flow in future. All flow patterns are clustered to extract the knowledge about the traffic flows. Instead of adopting a conventional cluster matching scheme for the traffic pattern clusters, a characteristic neural network (CNN) is generated to fuse the obtained clusters in a CNN adaptively to reduce computation. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach works well for variable bit rate flows.
