Nowadays, labeling a huge number of images is still a very challenging task. To tackle the problem of unlabeled data, unsupervised learning has been proposed. Among many unsupervised learning algorithms, K-means is the most popular algorithm. However, in a low-dimensional space, fuzzy c-means, which is more robust and less sensitive to initialization, has several advantages over K-means clustering. On the other hand, stacked convolutional pooling structures and manifold representation play pivotal roles in image clustering. In this paper, we proposed an unsupervised multilayer fuzzy neural network for image clustering, which unifies fuzzy systems, multilayer convolutional structures and manifold representation. The main contributions of this work are: First, we extend fuzzy systems to unsupervised tasks by introducing the manifold representation. Next, we proposed the idea of using only a small number of attributes with the largest variances to compute firing strengths. This is to prevent the firing strengths from falling to zero in clustering high-dimensional data. Then, randomly generated convolutional weights are used to extract features, which is a good choice for data without labels. It is demonstrated on a wide range of image datasets that the proposed approach is superior to existing fuzzy and non-fuzzy clustering algorithms. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Edge computing is a novel computing paradigm that offers kinds of resources at the network edge. In edge computing, terminal users are connected to edge servers via the wireless network and there are various channels in each wireless link. These wireless channels are limited resource while different channel has different cost and service ability. The dynamic changes of users’ status make it harder to find an appropriate method to satisfy the BPM requirements of channel deployment. With this observation, it is a tricky challenge to make a trade-off between the system cost(rental price) and the service ability(number of users). In view of this challenge, an intelligent resource scheduling method, named EdgeIRS, is proposed in this paper. In the technical sense, the EdgeIRS method can accommodate most users at the edge with a minimum cost of deploying channel resources in an online way. Its performance is analyzed theoretically and the experiments verify the superiority of the method.

Prediction of subsurface oil reservoir pressure are critical to hydrocarbon production. However, the accurate pressure estimation faces great challenges due to the complexity and uncertainty of reservoir. The underground seepage flow and petrophysical parameters (permeability and porosity) are important but difficult to measure in oilfield. Deep learning methods have been successfully used in reservoir engineering and oil & gas production process. In this study, the effective but inaccessible subsurface seepage fields are not used, only the spatial coordinates and temporal information are selected as model input to predict reservoir pressure. A stacked GRU-based deep learning model is proposed to map the relationship between spatio-temporal data and reservoir pressure. The proposed deep learning method is verified by using a three-dimensional reservoir model, and compared with commonly-used methods. The results show that the stacked GRU model has a better performance and higher accuracy than other deep learning or machine learning methods in pressure prediction.

To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to apply IoT technologies to transform the popular Mahjong game into a Digital Mahjong System (DMS) for digitally performing cognitive assessments. People have started exploring digital cognitive assessment tools for better objectivity and simplification. However, most of these tools are not friendly for older adults. This paper aims to address this issue by integrating IoT technologies with Mahjong to make cognitive assessment simpler and more engaging for older adults. DMS has the following features: 1) integrating motion tracking devices into Mahjong tiles and transferring them into Digital Mahjong Tiles (DMTs), which can precisely capture their moving trajectory during the assessment, 2) using a Near Field Communication reader to configure DMT’s primary data, 3) supporting Over-The-Air Device Firmware Update that can be done remotely via Bluetooth, and 4) developing a charging base that can charge 16 DMTs simultaneously using Qi wireless charging standard. With further testing, the DMS has the potential to become a digital platform to implement and test various cognitive assessment tools integrating Mahjong elements. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This work reviews the results of the NTIRE 2023 Challenge on Image Shadow Removal. The described set of solutions were proposed for a novel dataset, which captures a wide range of object-light interactions. It consists of 1200 roughly pixel aligned pairs of real shadow free and shadow affected images, captured in a controlled environment. The data was captured in a white-box setup, using professional equipment for lights and data acquisition sensors. The challenge had a number of 144 participants registered, out of which 19 teams were compared in the final ranking. The proposed solutions extend the work on shadow removal, improving over the performance level describing state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Recognizing human locomotion intent and activities is important for controlling the wearable robots while walking in complex environments. However, human-robot interface signals are usually user-dependent, which causes that the classifier trained on source subjects performs poorly on new subjects. To address this issue, this paper designs the ensemble diverse hypotheses and knowledge distillation (EDHKD) method to realize unsupervised cross-subject adaptation. EDH mitigates the divergence between labeled data of source subjects and unlabeled data of target subjects to accurately classify the locomotion modes of target subjects without labeling data. Continuous-depth neural networks, such as the Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), have aroused a great deal of interest from the communities of machine learning and data science in recent years, which bridge the connection between deep neural networks and dynamical systems. In this article, we introduce a new sort of continuous-depth neural network, called the Neural Piecewise-Constant Delay Differential Equations (PCDDEs). Here, unlike the recently proposed framework of the Neural Delay Differential Equations (DDEs), we transform the single delay into the piecewiseconstant delay(s). The Neural PCDDEs with such a transformation, on one hand, inherit the strength of universal approximating capability in Neural DDEs. On the other hand, the Neural PCDDEs, leveraging the contributions of the information from the multiple previous time steps, further promote the modeling capability without augmenting the network dimension. With such a promotion, we show that the Neural PCDDEs do outperform the several existing continuousdepth neural frameworks on the one-dimensional piecewiseconstant delay population dynamics and real-world datasets, including MNIST, CIFAR10, and *** Codes 34Kxx, 93Cxx, 92B2 © 2022, CC BY.

In the era of Internet of Things (IoT) and Federated Learning (FL), where distributed training models are essential, the FL paradigm has come into the spotlight for researchers. However, the inconsistency in the sources of client data and Non-Independent and Identically Distributed (Non-IID) heterogeneous characteristics lead to loss in model accuracy. Existing method which attempts to homogenize data distribution among clients based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) incurs high computation overheads on clients in IoT. In this paper, we propose a lightweight Feature Prototype Knowledge Transfer (FPKT) mechanism. By capturing the essence of data categories, FPKT generates pseudo-features without requiring the original data features, thereby efficiently enhancing model accuracy. We formally prove that FPKT resists Chosen Plaintext Attack (CPA) and experiments demonstrate that our scheme achieves a hundredfold increase in computational efficiency and improves model accuracy by up to 40%. © 2014 IEEE.

Chinese Grammatical Error Correction (CGEC) is both a challenging NLP task and a common application in human daily life. Recently, many data-driven approaches are proposed for the development of CGEC research. However, there are two major limitations in the CGEC field: First, the lack of high-quality annotated training corpora prevents the performance of existing CGEC models from being significantly improved. Second, the grammatical errors in widely used test sets are not made by native Chinese speakers, resulting in a significant gap between the CGEC models and the real application. In this paper, we propose a linguistic rules-based approach to construct large-scale CGEC training corpora with automatically generated grammatical errors. Additionally, we present a challenging CGEC benchmark derived entirely from errors made by native Chinese speakers in real-world scenarios. Extensive experiments and detailed analyses not only demonstrate that the training data constructed by our method effectively improves the performance of CGEC models, but also reflect that our benchmark is an excellent resource for further development of the CGEC field. Energy is essential for human existence, and its high consumption is a growing concern in today's technology-driven society. Global initiatives aim to reduce energy consumption and pollution by developing and deploying energy-efficient sensing technologies for long-term monitoring, control, automation, security, and interactions. Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) benefit a lot from the continuous monitoring capabilities of these sensing devices, which include medical sensors worn on or implanted in the human body for healthcare monitoring. Despite significant advancements, achieving energy efficiency in WBANs remains a significant challenge. A deep understanding of the WBAN architecture is essential to identify the causes of its energy inefficiency and develop novel energy-efficient solutions. We investigate energy efficiency issues specific to WBANs. We discuss the transformative impact that artificial intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) can have on achieving the energy efficiency of WBANs. Additionally, we explore the potential of emerging technologies such as quantum computing, nano-technology, biocompatible energy harvesting, and Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in enabling energy efficiency in WBANs. We focus on WBANs' architecture, hardware, and software components to identify key factors responsible for energy consumption in the WBAN environment. Based on our comprehensive review, we introduce an innovative, energy-efficient three-tier architecture for WBANs that employs ML and edge computing to overcome the limitations inherent in existing energy-efficient solutions. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned and highlight future research directions that will enable the development of energy-efficient solutions for WBANs.
