A technical description of the algorithms employed in the modified quadtree mesh generator is given. Although the basis of the mesh generator is the same as the original version developed by Yerry and Shephard,1,2 the actual algorithms on which it is built have been entirely changed for the purpose of ensuring the robustness of the technique. As demonstrated in the paper the algorithmic changes made do ensure the robustness of the approach, but introduce additional algorithmic difficulties, the solutions of which are also presented. In addition to examples showing the capability of the mesh generator, the linear computational growth rate of the mesh generator is demonstrated.

PHIGS specifies a high-level device independent interface to graphics systems. This interface emphasizes the modeling and articulation of hierarchically related graphical entities. It is essential that a graphics system supports the PHIGS functions at an adequate level of performance to achieve the articulations rapidly. A system is presented that is based on general purpose hardware modules assembled together in a special pipelined architecture to meet the above functional and performance needs. The main result is that the middle stages of the pipeline have similar requirements, and are best mapped to identical general purpose floating point processors. The design and performance of such a processor are discussed in detail. It is then shown how the system is expandable to meet foreseen future extensions to PHIGS. Finally, the suggested pipelined architecture is compared and contrasted to a parallel one.

The need for fully automatic finite element mesh generators capable of dealing with general geometries and mesh gradations is discussed. A specific approach to fully automatic two- and three-dimensional mesh generation that meets these needs for meshes with bounded h -type of mesh refinements is presented. These procedures, based on hierarchic spatial decompositions, allow for efficient a priori and a posteriori mesh refinements. An approach capable of producing coarse meshes with the unbounded exponential mesh gradations as desired for optional h - p refinements is also outlined.

The emergence of parallel array processing, both in software methodology and hardware technology, opens new avenues for the implementation and optimization of systems for interactivecomputergraphics. The Q -spline interpolation method is presented, designed for incremental curve definition, local curve modification, “on-the-curve” control points and computational efficiency in array processing environment. The implementation and performance of the algorithms in the environment of a general purpose interactivecomputergraphics system is described.
