Design research and practice within HCI is inherently oriented toward the future. However, the vision of the future described by HCI researchers and practitioners is typically utility-driven and focuses on the short term. It rarely acknowledges the potentially complex social and psychological long-term consequences of the technology artefacts produced. Thus, it has the potential to unintentionally cause real harm. Drawing on scholarship that investigates the link between fiction and design, this workshop will explore "alternate endings" to contemporary HCI papers. Attendees will use fictional narratives to envision long-term consequences of contemporary HCI projects, as a means for engaging the CHI community in a consideration of the values and implications of interactive technology.

People recovering from arm injuries are often prescribed limits to the amount of strain they can place on their muscles at a given point during the recovery process. However, it is sometimes difficult for them to know when a given activity creates strain in excess of these limits. To inform this process, we have developed a prototype, the LightWeight, and describe it here. The aim of the LightWeight is to inform users of the strain on targeted muscles as the activity occurs, and to display the relationship of that strain to the aforementioned limits. LightWeight is embedded within a compression sleeve that measures muscle strain through conductive fabric and EMG while displaying that information through an intuitive circular LED display.

This paper provides an overview of an ongoing NSF project that is intended to improve the long-term quality of care for patients suffering from early stage Parkinson's disease. Due to facial masking in the patient, a stigmatization often occurs in their relationship with the caregiver due to the inability to adequately perceive the patient's emotional state. We are developing robot co-mediators to assist in the transmission of this information through the use of artificial moral emotions that trigger suitable proxemic expressions in the robot, with the goal of ensuring that the quality of the patient-caregiver relationship is preserved.

This paper presents an autonomous planning and control framework for humanoid robots to climb general ladder- and stair-like structures. The approach consists of two major components: 1) a multi-limbed locomotion planner that takes as input a ladder model and automatically generates a whole-body climbing trajectory that satisfies contact, collision, and torque limit constraints; 2) a compliance controller which allows the robot to tolerate errors from sensing, calibration, and execution. Simulations demonstrate that the robot is capable of climbing a wide range of ladders and tolerating disturbances and errors. Physical experiments demonstrate the DRC-Hubo humanoid robot successfully mounting, climbing, and dismounting an industrial ladder similar to the one intended to be used in the DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials.

This nascent area, that has begun to be referred to in various research circles as "computational social science", provides an exciting and promising development in the CSCW community. Sustainable energy supply and demand can partially be solved by the conservation of energy, which is a personal and self-driven action. However, energy conservation currently requires the purchase of third-party products. The upfront cost of purchasing these products to monitor energy consumption in a home is a barrier that further cements the divide of those that have and those that have not. Detailed appliance power consumption reporting should be made available for free as part of the home's smart meter. Governments and power utilities must improve and expand policies that promote a socio-economic balance allowing everyone to participate in energy conservation regardless of their economic situation in a sustained way. We critically look at what economics and government polices exist and need to exist. We also demonstrate the computational means to achieve this - nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) - and discuss how manufacturing and standards organizations need to work together to provide the essential information that describes how appliances consume energy. This paper proposes a Consumer Bill of Rights for Energy Conservation.
