This workshop is a follow-up to our successful Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting at CHI’12. The SIG focused on eye gaze as a highly effective, seamless, and fast means of human-computer interaction in various contexts, but showed that suitable applications and overall convenience are still lacking. Consequently, we see an expressive need for continued in-depth discussion on how the diversity of application contexts could specifically benefit from the incorporation of the user’s gaze. In this regard, we concentrate on gaze interaction in combination with post-WIMP interaction styles as opposed to traditional desktop setups to broaden the view for novel ways to interact with eye gaze. The objective of the CHI’13 workshop is to further promote this emerging field by addressing fundamental research questions regarding novel gaze-based interaction in the post-WIMP world.

The Variable Time-Shift Hidden Markov Model (VTS-HMM) is proposed for learning and modeling pairs of correlated streams. Unlike previous coupled models for time series, the VTS-HMM accounts for varying time shifts between correlated events in pairs of streams having different properties. The VTS-HMM is learned on a set of pairs of unaligned streams and, thus, learning entails simultaneous estimation of the varying time shifts and of the parameters of the model. The formulation is demonstrated in the analysis of videos of dyadic social interactions between children and adults in the Multimodal Dyadic Behavior Dataset (MMDB). In dyadic social interactions, an agent starts an interaction with one or more "initiating behaviors" that elicit one or more "responding behaviors" from the partner within a temporal window. The proposed VTS-HMM explicitly accounts for varying time shifts between initiating and responding behaviors in these behavior streams. The experiments confirm that modeling of these varying time shifts in the VTS-HMM can yield improved estimation of the level of engagement of the child and adult and more accurate discrimination among complex activities.

Robotics has been considered as one of the five key technology areas for defense against attacks with weapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, due to the mass impact nature of WMD, failures of counter-WMD (C-WMD) missions can have catastrophic consequences. To ensure robots' success in carrying out C-WMD missions, we have developed a novel verification framework in providing performance guarantees for behavior-based and probabilistic robot algorithms in complex real-world environments. This paper describes the system architecture and discusses how the verification framework can be used to provide pre-mission performance guarantees for robots in executing C-WMD missions.

One of the most important prerequisites for achieving the Semantic Web vision is semantic annotation of data/resources. Semantic annotation enriches unstructured and/or semi-structured content with a context that is further linked to the structured domain-specific knowledge. In particular, ontology-based semantic annotators enable the selection of a specific ontology to annotate content. This paper presents results of an empirical study of recent ontology-based annotators, namely Stanbol, KIM, and SDArch. Specifically, we evaluated the robustness of these annotators with respect to specific features of ontology concepts such as the length of concepts' labels and their linguistic categories (e.g., prepositions and conjunctions). Our results show that although significantly correlated according to most of the conducted evaluations, tools still exhibit their unique features that could be a topic of new research.
