The AAAI 2010 Workshop on Enabling Intelligence through Middleware focused on the issues and opportunities inherent in the robotics middleware packages. The workshop consisted of two parts, invited talks and middleware presentations. Robert Kohout (DARPA), Sven Koenig (NSF) and Dustin Heaton (Alabama) delivered the invited talks, which focused on the perceptions of the current issues and possible research approaches. Kohout stated his belief that we will only be able to create truly intelligent machines by integrating a wide variety of intelligent competencies in a single system, grounded in perception and control. Koenig acknowledged that barriers exist to getting middleware research funded as it is considered engineering. Dustin Heaton and Jeff Carver highlighted the larger community that is not being served. Morgan Quigley presented the robotics operating system (ROS), an open source framework designed to accommodate a wide range of robotics systems.
Researchers and practitioners show increasing interest in utilizing patient-generated information on the Web. Although the HCI and CSCW communities have provided many exciting opportunities for exploring new ideas and...

These detailed guidelines attempt to explain the mechanics of writing a third year project dissertation in computerscience. They serve as a useful starting point for students (and new advisers) in their third or fourth year of study in the computerscience Department of a UK-based university. Afterall, no one is born knowing how to write a dissertation. Yet, there are certain elements, a commonality, that can be found in virtually all good dissertations. We give our recommendations as to each section a good dissertation consists of as well as what each section contains. These guidelines are generic and can be customized to fit most projects. The guidelines are open and free to use at any university or institution without permission. We believe that the writing can start with the abstract, however, in practice writing usually starts with the background section. The abstract can be approximately 6-12 sentences. It is a difficult starting point, but it forces the author to write down a concise description of what it is they're researching and what the benefits are. Chances are, if the author can't write an abstract, then it is not clear in the author's mind what the project is about. Of course the abstract will be refined and updated over the lifetime of the project. The abstract can concisely (1) identify the project topic, (2) identify the benefits and advantages that result (3) and if there is novelty, describe the novelty of the presented work. If there's a description of the project in a previously existing project selection brochure then that can be used as a basis for an abstract. These guidelines are a starting point only and are not a substitute for an advisor.

This paper proposes a new model of perception called Perceptual Logic and applies it to the domain of art to understand artistic style. We describe style in terms of affordances, or ways in which an artist can interact with and contribute to an artwork. Different types of Perceptual Logic are found to influence the perceived affordances of an artwork. We present a computational collaborative art program called PERLOGICART that uses a computational model of Perceptual Logic to learn an artist's style through collaboration. The research is conducted using a practicebased method- we are working on building an interactive tool to support the making of artworks and the understanding of the creative process at the same time. PERLOGICART is a compelling interactive artwork as well as a valuable research tool that records and categorizes the creative process in a systematic manner. Copyright 2011 ACM.
The 19th robotics program at the annual AAAI conference was held in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2010. In this article we give a summary of three components of the exhibition: the Small-Scale Manipulation Challenge: Robo...

We present iSAM2, a fully incremental, graph- based version of incremental smoothing and mapping (iSAM). iSAM2 is based on a novel graphical model-based interpretation of incremental sparse matrix factorization methods, afforded by the recently introduced Bayes tree data structure. The origi- nal iSAM algorithm incrementally maintains the square root information matrix by applying matrix factorization updates. We analyze the matrix updates as simple editing operations on the Bayes tree and the conditional densities represented by its cliques. Based on that insight, we present a new method to incrementally change the variable ordering which has a large effect on efficiency. The efficiency and accuracy of the new method is based on fluid relinearization, the concept of selectively relinearizing variables as needed. This allows us to obtain a fully incremental algorithm without any need for periodic batch steps. We analyze the properties of the resulting algorithm in detail, and show on various real and simulated datasets that the iSAM2 algorithm compares favorably with other recent mapping algorithms in both quality and efficiency.

Asthma is one of the most common childhood chronic diseases in the world, and the nature of paediatric asthma management inherently requires intense collaborative care. In this paper, we report the results of a multi-method qualitative inquiry aimed at understanding paediatric asthma management and the potential for technologies to support low-income families. Our findings highlight three themes around the challenges to managing paediatric asthma faced by low-income families in the US: information sharing about environmental triggers, health communication and coordination, and the need for social support. Additionally, we critique existing solutions in light of the needs of families and suggest new avenues for designing for effective asthma management.

This workshop is aimed at exploring the issues at the intersection of feminist thinking and human computer interaction. Both feminism and HCI have made important contributions to social science in the past several decades, but though their potential for overlap seem high, they have not engaged each other directly until recently. In this workshop we will explore diverse-and contentious-ways that feminist perspectives can support user research, design ideation and problem framing, sketching and prototyping, and design criticism and evaluation. The workshop will include fast-moving mini-panels and hands-on group exercises emphasizing feminist interaction criticism and design ideation.

This SIG proposal, sponsored by the CHI Design Community, looks at the intersection and cross-fertilization between HCI, and Digital and Performance Arts. We consider how the exploration of engaging and meaningful artistic experience can further push the boundaries of HCI research and practice and how tool use and models of evaluation can be explored to assist the development of creative enterprises. We consider how artists' early experiments with technology can inform mainstream design thinking, and how theories and practice in aesthetics can feed into User Experience.
