This paper describes the structure, format, and outcome of an experimental class in Handheld Augmented Reality Game design conducted as an inter-institutional collaboration between the Georgia Institute of Technology and Savannah College of Art and design. It analyzes several unique elements of the class, especially the need for rapid prototyping of multiple games when exploring game design using novel game technology, and highlights important issues regarding interdisciplinary collaboration and mobile augmented reality gaming. The paper also discusses several approaches taken by students in completing class assignments, which suggest viable design strategies for the creation of future handheld augmented reality experiences. The four women on this panel devote their scholarship to computer games. We love games of all sorts. We love to play them and build them. Both activities require creative, inquisitive, problem solving that is essential to good computer science. We also love to use games as vehicles for teachingimportant ideas about computer science and software design. At least one of us is a hard core gamer. And one of us is old enough to have played, as an adult, the very first video games. So it is with just a bit of frustration that we repeatedly hear that "boys like games and girls like stories. Granted, that is hyperbolic, but in subtler ways the current trend to use games as a vehicle to attract students to computer science is focused on a narrow perception of what a video game is, as well as a narrow perception of who a "gamer" is. The bifurcation of focus: that to attract a particular kind of male to computing through games, and a particular kind of female through media and storytelling, is quite frankly, in the words of a panel member, "hogwash" We four love both games and interactive stories. From our scholarship and our classroom experience we know that girls do like games, and boys like stories. This calls into question how undergraduate programs in computer science, media, game design and information science embrace or reject "games" in their core. The CS community must consider the assumptions being made both about what game design is, and how it can be used as a vehicle to fulfill a pedagogic agenda. This panel will address four important issues: (1) Perceptions of what computer science and game design are, (2) Taking a broad view of what a game is, and focusing on the creative process of game design (3) exploiting the range of game genre to fulfill learning objectives, and (4) Assessing whether or not those learning objectives have been reached.

This poster updates the community on the progress of the campus-wide e-portfolio rollout at the University of Wollongong, since it was reported on at the ASCILITE 2006 conference. During 2007 additional Faculties have come on board to develop a Faculty or program customised template and to release this to their students, and additional Careers Service programs have also developed e-portfolios. By August 2007 around 1200 eportfolios have been released to students and around 150 have been released to staff. 2 early adopters (teachers) have been interviewed to discuss how they integrated the eportfolio into the context of their particular subjects, and reflecting on how this could be improved. Plans for further development and dissemination are discussed including links to the Carrick funded national e-portfolio study. © 2007 Sarah Lambert.

This paper presents a heuristic approach to classify images on web pages using image contents and image processing techniques. The initial goal is to classify images into four groups: human, icon, banner, and scenic image. The heuristics are applied in two phases: Segmentation Phase, and Feature Analysis Phase. In the Segmentation Phase, image processing techniques are used to detect skin colour. In the Feature Analysis Phase, the information from prior phase together with other image information, such as size and number of colours found in the image are used to classify the image. The algorithm was tested with one hundred images. The experimental results showed accuracy of 87.00 percent. After elaborately examining causes of error occurred, the low contrast human image caused the proposed algorithm difficult to segment human face by RGB colour skin tone. Also, the number of colour might not be the excellent factor in determining whether the image is an icon. We plan to improve this algorithm by using a new colour model for segmenting skin tone colour. Also, the other factors such as shape of the objects could be taken into consideration to improve the algorithm performance. Then, we will integrate this algorithm to our under developing web document annotation system.

作者： Wallden, Matt Often a fad may be described perhaps falsely as a paradigm shift. In the rehabilitation and prevention section of the previous issue of JBMT Lederman (2010) challenged what many would consider a paradigm shift that has occurred over the last decade or more as a result of the focus by many bodywork and movement therapists on “core stability”. What Lederman's (2010) article highlighted was the fact that bodyworkers and movement educators have a number of tools in their tool-kit and an important skill involves the ability to grow with the knowledge base and not to succumb to trends as “panaceas” nor to become too dogmatic regarding beliefs. This is easier said than done of course. Nevertheless if such advances can be seen as emergent tools which may at some point become usurped by other more current techniques this may be judged an appropriate evolution. Equally it is important to not become dogmatic in the way the tools used by others are judged too narrow a focus usually results in collisions with unforeseen peripheral concepts and rationale. One rationale Lederman has previously used was to ask how the human body should function by looking for an evolutionary advantage (Lederman 2000). Clearly there is rarely a time when a primal human being would be found doing a prone transversus abdominis activation exercise with a biofeedback cuff! Nevertheless there may be rationale to explain how human physiology could embrace “core stability” and other methods as part of a primal environment (see Textbox 1). In recent years, computer applications have emerged as viable means of gathering and disseminating nutrition information. Both stand-alone and on-line applications are being used to provide information on and training in nutrition education for the public, paraprofessionals, and professionals. While the use of on-line communication applications such as electronic mail (e-mail), electronic discussion groups, and list-servs are just emerging as important tools among nutrition educators, the exponential growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web are making these technologies more and more accessible. Nutrition educators are encouraged to explore the opportunities and challenges of these new technologies to enhance their work.

Use of a Multimedia Program Improved Medical Student Knowledge of Nutrition and Cancer Prevention

LEARNING OUTCOME: To examine student response to a multimedia CD-RCM program on nutrition and cancer prevention Medical students used the original multimedia program “Images of Cancer Prevention: the Nutrition Cancer Link” to study nutrition and its links to the natural history of cancer, dietary guidelines for cancer prevention and dietary counseling strategies for assisting patients in reducing their risks of breast, colon, and lung cancer. Students were unable to describe the natural history of cancer before completing the program. They were able to describe only some of the dietary guidelines for cancer prevention before completing the program. They were only able to hypothesize a few of the modifiable risks for cancer. More than 170 students completed the program and significantly improved their ability to counsel patients on the dietary strategies individuals might choose for cancer risk reduction. Learners required 2Y* hours of independent study time to complete the program and enthusiastically recommended the program be used with their colleagues. Images of Cancer Prevention, the Nutrition Link is a multimedia program that uses animations, video interview with experts and vivid graphics to engage learners in the process of discovering nutrition factors related to cancer risk reduction. Its development was supported by a grant from the NCI. A demonstration of the program and results of the pre and post survey will be presented. Applications to dietetics will be highlighted.

Highlights the need for engineers who design vehicles to worksimultaneously with engineers who manufacture these vehicles in order toimprove product quality. Discusses the advantages of changing theemphasis of the total engineering process from one which concentrates onproblem identification and resolution to one which focuses on meetingand exceeding customer expectations. Identifies behavioural andtechnical skills which support an engineering process which reflectsthese two key attributes and a training programme in these skillsoutlined. Considers the structure of the training programme andemphasizes the complementary nature of the behavioural and the technicalskills and their relationships. Includes a case study on the applicationof engineering quality improvement programme methodologies in the designof experiments.

ANALYSIS OF A MOVABLE BOUNDARY ACCESS TECHNIQUE FOR A MULTISERVICE MULTIBEAM SATELLITE SYSTEM

He is at present completing the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Concordia University. (S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. He has chaired numerous technical sessions in IEEE Conferences was the Technical Program Chairman for IEEE Montech 1986 Montreal Canada. In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.
